According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American birth rate dropped for the 6th sequential year in 2020, with the lowest amount of children born since 1979.

The number of births for the U.S. in 2020 was 3,605,201, down 4 percent from 2019. The overall fertility rate was 55.8 births per 1,000 women aged 15–44, down 4 percent from 2019 to touch another record low for the nation and approximately half of it in the beginning 1960s. The total fertility rate was 1,637.5 births per 1,000 women in 2020, down 4 percent from 2019 to reach another record low for the United States. In 2020, birth rates decreased for women in all age groups 15–44 and were maintained for teenagers aged 10–14 and women aged 45–49. The birth rate for teens aged 15–19 decreased by 8 percent in 2020 to 15.3 births per 1,000 girls.

The drop in birth rates was observed among all observed racial groups. Births decreased by 4 percent among white, black, and White Hispanic women, 9 percent for Asian, 7 percent for Native American, and 3 percent for Pacific Islanders (including Hawaiians) women.

History of teen fertility rates in the United States

Teen fertility rates in the United States have halved in the past ten years but remain highest in southern states. In 2010 fertility rate was 34.3 births per 1000 females 15-19 across the country, while in 2019 was 16.7 per 1000 females 15-19.

Fertility rates have decreased in all U.S. states, especially Texas, New Mexico, and Washington DC. The most significant decrease has been among African American teen mothers, which is not surprising because the most significant absolute decrease often happens in the group that starts the highest.
