To answer this question, they calculated the average cost of hidden fees for fast food deliveries in every state and the most populated U.S. cities.

Seattle’s Uber Eats Hidden Fees: The Highest in the Nation

If you’re in Seattle and craving takeout, it might be kinder on your wallet to go out to eat instead: the average cost of hidden fees on an Uber Eats order here is $12.16, more than in any other U.S. city. Locals may grumble, but there’s a good reason: a new Seattle law implemented in January 2024 requires gig workers like delivery drivers to receive a minimum wage, leading Uber to add a “Local Operating Fee” of five dollars and increase its service fees.

Four Californian cities round out the top five spots, with the average hidden fees of ordering through Uber Eats in San Francisco totaling $7.35. Pricey fees don’t seem to bother Golden Gate locals, though: one Uber Eats report noted that San Francisco is one of the most polite cities when it comes to customer instructions, with users writing “please” and “thank you” the most. It’s also likely less of an issue, considering San Francisco boasts the country’s highest median household income.

In contrast, residents of Toledo, Ohio, pay the lowest average cost ($2.13) for hidden fees when using Uber Eats. None of the top ten cities with the lowest fees have an average hidden cost that exceeds three dollars. They are indeed lucky!

Washington State’s Hidden Fees: The Highest in the U.S.

Looking at states as a whole, Washington ($7.80) has the priciest average hidden fees on Uber Eats, influenced by Seattle’s minimum wage law. California has the second highest with an average of $6.42. In 2020, Uber and its peers successfully pushed for the passing of Proposition 22, a Californian law that exempts gig workers from being classified as employees. Uber increased its rates in the Golden State to offset the cost of the new benefits it promised workers.

The rights of rideshare workers like Uber Eats drivers are a concern for many across the nation. In Connecticut, the state with the third highest hidden fees (an average of $4.99), drivers have lobbied for better pay, prompting Uber to respond that the resulting increased fares (and, presumably, food delivery fees) would put Connecticut riders and users off Uber entirely.

On average, the hidden fees on an Uber Eats order in Delaware are only $2.31, which is lower than any other state in the US. Delaware is among three states in the United States that do not permit the direct delivery of alcohol to consumers, but lawmakers are working on a bill to change this, allowing alcohol to be purchased along with at least $10 worth of food through apps like Uber Eats.

Seattle is the city in the United States with the highest average of $12.16 in hidden fees added to each order. This is nearly twice the cost that the city with the second-highest cost, San Francisco ($7.35), has to pay.

Among the highest is New York City ($6.24), where Uber Eats adds a New York Courier Fee (an extra $2 per $30 spent) to orders to compensate for a higher minimum wage requirement. Minneapolis, with an average fare of $5.54, is at the top in Minnesota. Uber is threatening to cease operations in the city due to new laws requiring the company to pay its drivers a minimum wage.

A Detailed Look at Hidden Fees for Uber Eats Orders Across the United States

The CouponBirds team analyzed the average cost of Uber Eats’ hidden fees by considering three popular dishes from McDonald’s, Subway, and Chick-fil-A across the United States. The visualization below shows the states with the highest hidden fees for each meal. It considers the total cost of hidden fees and the equivalent percentage cost versus the price of the food.

The most expensive dish to order among the three meals is the 6-inch Garlic Roast Beef Sub from Subway. On average, Uber Eats users in the U.S. have to pay hidden fees equivalent to 37% of the cost of the sandwich. The states of Washington and California have the highest hidden fees across the board.

States with the Highest Hidden Fees for Uber Eats Orders

The next graphic illustrates the distribution of hidden fees for Uber Eats orders across all states. Hidden fees consist of service fees and taxes in most states, but in six others, an additional fee contributes to the total cost. One of the states considering this fee is Maryland, where as of March 2024, lawmakers are thinking about implementing a 50-cent “road impact” fee on rideshare trips and food deliveries. In Oregon, due to the absence of sales tax, service fees account for 96% of the hidden costs of ordering from Uber Eats.

A study by YouGov revealed that 21% of individuals in the U.S. order takeout multiple times per month. We’re not the global biggest lovers of ordering in (looking at you, Taiwan and Thailand), but when the average cost of an Uber Eats delivery in the United States is $33.94, you can see how our taste for takeout affects our finances.

Methodology & Sources

From a list of 164 of the most populous American cities, the CouponBirds team manually gathered online prices and additional ‘taxes and other fees’ for three popular fast food dishes on Uber Eats:

• 6″ Garlic Roast Beef Sub (Subway)
• 3 ct Chick-n-Strips Meal (Chick-fil-A)
• Double Quarter Pounder® with Cheese Meal (McDonald’s)

They then determined the average price paid (USD) in ‘taxes and other fees’ that appear at the checkout stage of the order for each American city and state. Next, the CouponBirds team calculated the average price paid for these fees per dish in each U.S. state.

Taxes and other fees typically include a service fee and taxes. Sometimes, a city and state include a third legislative tax (for instance, the ‘Driver Benefits Fee‘ in California). These types of charges were also included in the calculations for a hidden fee.

The earnings of celebrities on Instagram each year hinge on factors like follower count, influence, business savvy, and how often they use that #ad tag.

To determine which celebrities are raking in the most in each state across sports, acting, and music, Bored Panda analyzed over 90,000 Instagram posts from 850 celebrities and estimated their annual earnings.

Which American Celebrities Earn the Most From Instagram Each Year?

Kevin Hart tops the list as America’s highest-paid Instagram star, earning an estimated $28,119,986 last year from 26 ads. With around 180 million followers, Hart uses Instagram to promote his brands, such as Gran Coramino tequila, VitaHustle, and Hart House vegan restaurant. In contrast, Mark Wahlberg earned $15,510,686 from 88 sponsored posts, despite having only 29.4 million followers—about 16% of Hart’s follower count. Notably, the Jenner/Kardashians, with more followers than Hart, post far fewer ads but still rank high among America’s top Instagram earners.

Among 12 states with million-dollar Instagram celebrities, South Carolina stands out with “Outer Banks” and “Glass Onion” actor Madelyn Cline, a global brand ambassador for Revlon, who got her start in a Chuck E. Cheese TV commercial.

The American Sports Stars That Earn the Most from Instagram Per Year

Three generations of basketball stars dominate the top-earning American athletes on Instagram. While LeBron James has more followers than Steph Curry and Shaquille O’Neal combined, Curry leads in earnings with an estimated $7,502,807 from Instagram ads last year, posting 3½ times as many ads as James. Other top NBA earners include Dwyane Wade, Allen Iverson, and Chris Paul.

Kevin Hart, posting once a fortnight on average—2.5 times more frequently than other top actors—leads as the highest-earning American actor on Instagram. Hart, along with Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, surpasses a long list of lower, yet still seven-figure, earners. Johnson’s $9.5 million earnings from just four sponsored posts are notable, especially as he uses his massive following to promote his brands and movies.

Jennifer Lopez supplements her music income with an estimated $9,130,949 annually from just six ads to her 253.7 million Instagram followers. Her sponsored posts include spots for Intimissimi and Virgin Voyages, along with promotions for her drink and cosmetics lines. Cardi B, with 85 million fewer followers, earned an estimated $6 million from the same number of sponsored posts, while Beyonce earned nearly $2 million from a single sponsored ad for Verizon.

The blending of stars and the products they promote predates Instagram. Rihanna, for example, rose to fame through strategic partnerships with brands like Totes and Nike before the advent of social media. Now, celebrities can seamlessly integrate sponsored content into their daily posts, allowing them to boost their incomes significantly.

Methodology

The Bored Panda team identified the most notable and most followed celebrities in each state, compiling a list of 850 U.S. celebrities. To calculate each celebrity’s estimated yearly earnings, they multiplied the number of disclosed ads in the past 12 months (April 2023 to March 2024) by the estimated amount each celebrity can charge per sponsored post.

The Bored Panda team determined the cost per sponsored post using data from Hopper HQ’s annual Instagram Rich list and calculated the cost per follower for those not covered by the report. Analyzing over 90,000 Instagram posts from April 2023 to March 2024, the team identified 2,687 sponsored posts across 419 celebrities, isolating them by focusing on “paid partnership” tags and ad-related hashtags.

Using a Random Forest Regression model, the team estimated the cost per follower by dividing the cost per post by the number of followers, factoring in the account category and location. This data analysis was completed in April 2024.

For instance, Burger King in Hawaii costs 33.96% more than in Maine, while Taco Bell in Alabama is 21.81% less than the national average, based on analyzed Grubhub prices. To provide a comprehensive overview of value and pricing, NetCredit assessed the relative prices for seven top takeout joints across the United States.

Key Findings:

• Anchorage (AK) and Honolulu (HI) pay over 18% more than the national average for takeout, the highest among U.S. cities.

• Alaska has the highest premium on takeout, at 18.17% above the national average.

Which U.S. States Pay The Biggest Price Premium For Takeouts and Major Chains?

Alaska boasts the highest markup on examined takeout food, surpassing other U.S. states by a considerable margin. With less than a million acres of farmland, Alaska is known for its notably expensive food, leading to an 18.17% premium on takeout compared to the calculated national average. Despite this added cost, residents in remote areas of Alaska are willing to pay extra, often ranging from $10 to $30, for delivery services like DoorDash or Uber Eats to literally transport their orders home by air.

Katie Burrows, an airline assistant in southwest Alaska, explains, “There’s literally no roads to connect these people to McDonald’s or to KFC or whatever. Paying an expediter or DoorDashing something to our office and paying $20 is really not that expensive compared to going into town.”

The cheapest states tend to be low-cost-of-living areas with strong agricultural or energy sectors, which may contribute to bringing prices down. Restaurants in these states must also factor in competitive pricing since they are represented in high numbers: fifth-cheapest Alabama has the most fast food joints overall, and the cheapest of all, Texas, has the most big-name pizza outlets. States such as these and Tennessee, Mississippi and Utah — the remainder of the five cheapest — lend themselves to the drive-thru experience.

The trio of Anchorage, Honolulu, and Fairbanks, representing the non-contiguous states, claim the top spots as the three most expensive cities for takeout. Supply challenges in these regions contribute to elevated costs. Following closely is Los Angeles, where the average takeout expenses surpass the calculated national average by 17.93%. The combination of relatively high restaurant taxes and an overall elevated cost of living amplifies the price tag for takeaways in Californian cities like LA and San Diego.

In contrast, Texas emerges as the most cost-effective state overall, boasting two cities among the ten cheapest. Remarkably, the cities with the most favorable deals are approximately 6% more economical than even their own state average. Hattiesburg (MS), for instance, is -12.14% cheaper than the calculated national average, outperforming the Mississippi state average, which is -6.60% below the national average. Wheeling (-11.59%) and Parkersburg (-11.52%), both located in West Virginia, demonstrate a parallel trend of offering prices significantly below their respective state averages.

The Price Premium For Burger King Takeout by U.S. State

Established in Florida in 1954, Burger King continues to offer Floridians an advantageous deal on their hamburger and fries. In the Sunshine State, a Whopper, French Fries, and Bacon Double Cheeseburger cost precisely -6% less than the calculated national average for these menu items. For comparison, McDonald’s is only -2.46% cheaper in Florida than in the rest of the country.

On the opposite coast, across the Eastern Pacific, Hawaii faces the highest costs for Burger King, paying 33.96% over the national average, which is 14.75% more than the second-highest, California (19.21%). Even Burger King’s renowned ‘ $1 taco‘ was priced at $1.39 in the Aloha State when it was available.

The Price Premium For KFC Takeout by U.S. State

Utah stands out as the most cost-effective location for KFC, marking the site of Colonel Sanders’ inaugural Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise in 1952. Specifically, the Spicy Chicken Sandwich Combo, 8 pc. Chicken Only, and Secret Recipe Fries come at a remarkable -18.22% below the national average for these menu items, presenting a notable -5.43% reduction compared to the second-least expensive state, Texas (-12.79%). The economic accessibility of KFC in mid-century Utah played a pivotal role in its swift success. Professor Laura Gelfand from Utah State University emphasizes, “It was not only affordable, but the Southern roots of the recipe also gave it an intriguing blend of foreign authenticity and warm charm.”

Furthermore, in Kentucky, where Colonel Sanders introduced his renowned chicken, prices are a significant -7.08% under the national average. Conversely, Kentuckians experience a 5.96% higher cost than the national average when opting for chicken at Popeyes.

The Price Premium For McDonald’s Takeout by U.S. State

In Alaska, Massachusetts, and Vermont, regular McDonald’s dishes are notably more expensive than the national average. Earlier this year, Massachusetts gained attention in the fast-food industry for being home to America’s most expensive Big Mac. According to Riley Walz, the creator of the Fast Food Index, the priciest Big Mac, costing $7.89 [U.S.], is found in Lee, Massachusetts. Interestingly, just a few hundred feet away on the other side of the highway at another McDonald’s, the same Big Mac is sold for $1.50 less. In response to this revelation, McDonald’s told Business Insider that “prices are ultimately at the discretion of our franchisees and may vary by restaurant.”

The Price Premium For Pizza Hut Takeout by U.S. State

Pizza Hut displays the narrowest price range from the least to the most expensive offerings in the United States. The cost of a 14” Meat Lover’s Pizza, Veggie Lover’s Pizza, and Pepperoni Lover’s Pizza in Hawaii, standing at 12.68% above the national average, contrasts with Michigan’s pricing, which is notably lower at -12.96% below average, marking a 25.64% difference. A geographical pattern emerges, with four of the five most economical states forming a cross-regional strip from the Rust Belt to the Sunbelt in the mid-East. The eastern states of America, known for their higher concentration of pizza establishments, likely contribute to a more competitive pricing landscape.

For those in Hawaii, opting for a local restaurant might be a wiser choice, especially given that Pizza Hut is comparatively pricier in this location. Notably, even the ‘Hawaiian’ ham and pineapple pizza is not authentically Hawaiian but rather described as “sort of Greek-Canadian,” as highlighted in our recent price comparison analysis between Pizza Hut and Domino’s.

The Price Premium For Popeyes Takeout by U.S. State

Popeyes draws its name from Gene Hackman’s character in The French Connection, though it was initially named something more plant-friendly: Chicken on the Run. The establishment was founded under its original name in Arabi, New Orleans, in 1972. The Southern-style chicken that the region inspired continues to influence national pricing. In Louisiana, the birthplace of Popeyes, the cost of a Spicy Chicken Sandwich Combo, 2 pc. Signature Chicken Combo, and 12 pc. Nuggets are only 0.28% higher than the national average for these items.

The Price Premium For Subway Takeout by U.S. State

Similar to Popeyes, Subway’s foundational pricing is reflected in its home state, Connecticut, where it stands just 0.40% above the national average. However, once you move beyond Connecticut, the pricing landscape for Subway becomes quite diverse. All of Subway’s U.S. establishments are operated by franchisees who have the authority to set local prices and can also choose to exclude their franchise from accepting certain coupons.

Facing substantial challenges in recent years, Subway made the decision to close over 1,000 branches in 2021. Notably, New York experienced a significant loss, with 22% of its Subway locations shutting down in just three years. This reduction in numbers may be a contributing factor to the unexpectedly appealing prices in the state, which are currently approximately -4.67% below the national average.

The Price Premium For Taco Bell Takeout by U.S. State

Taco Bell’s roots are deeply embedded in California, and this influence is reflected in the pricing structure for Californians, who enjoy a reasonable deal with a mere 2.54% premium above the national average. This stands in contrast to the 9.44% extra they pay for Pizza Hut and the 19.21% increase for Burger King. The substantial presence of Taco Bell in California, with 1,748 locations accounting for around 11% of its entire fleet, creates a competitive environment among franchisees, compelling them to price their tacos attractively.

Methology

The NetCredit team’s examination of takeout food pricing is based on data sourced from Grubhub.com, providing insights into the states and cities where residents pay the most for such services.

To conduct this analysis, they compiled menus from various fast-food chains across 260 cities, representing the most populated areas in each state. The focus was on popular items from each chain, specifically:

• McDonald’s: Big Mac, French Fries, 10 pc. Chicken McNuggets, 10 Piece McNuggets.
• Pizza Hut: 14” Meat Lover’s Pizza, 14” Veggie Lover’s Pizza, 14” Pepperoni Lover’s Pizza.
• Subway: B.L.T, Meatball Marinara, Tuna.
• Burger King: Whopper, French Fries, Bacon Double Cheeseburger.
• KFC: Spicy Chicken Sandwich Combo, 8 pc. Chicken Only, Secret Recipe Fries.
• Popeyes: Spicy Chicken Sandwich Combo, 2 pc. Signature Chicken Combo, 12 pc. nuggets.
• Taco Bell: Crunchwrap Supreme, Crunchy Taco Supreme, Burrito Supreme.

The team calculated the average national prices for all items collectively and for each individual chain. By comparing these national averages to the prices within each state and city, they determined the percentage premium for takeout across these chains and for each chain individually.

In a landscape where iPhones frequently occupy the top-tier pricing bracket in stores, it’s worth noting that iPhones are relatively more affordable to purchase in Japan. Speaking of pricing, it’s no surprise that Apple’s market dominance extends to wealthier countries like Denmark (67.49%), Norway (65.21%), Canada (62.95%), the United States (59.89%), and Switzerland (58.24%).

The cost of the item isn’t the only economic barrier superfans confront. Taking local incomes into consideration, Argentina is not among the ten least affordable markets.

African nations account for 5 of the most expensive territories. The cost of owning a full suite of Apple tech is the least affordable in Burundi, where you would have to spend 10,319% more than the average yearly salary.

The Methodology Behind This Study

The CashNetUSA team defined the cost of being an Apple Superfan by analyzing the prices in every nation of the most premium Apple products and combining them into one overall cost. The most premium Apple products were defined as the iPhone 14 Pro Max 1TB, the Apple Watch Ultra, the AirPods Max, the MacBook Pro 16-inch M2 Max 1TB, the iPad Pro 12.9-inch M2 Cellular 2TB, and the Apple TV 4K 128GB.

The prices were obtained in the local currency’s list price and inclusive of tax charges, before being converted into American dollars. The prices of Apple products were derived from Apple.com or the local country suppliers that the website recommends. For other nations that lacked this data, the team derived prices from local consumer technology retailers or international online retailers and technology providers, such as Amazon.com, where international delivery charges are included.

For each nation containing available pricing for each of the highest product specifications, the CashNetUSA team merged the cost into one overall price of being an ‘Apple Superfan.’ The team also studied the affordability of these Apple products by ranking each product’s separate and combined prices against a country’s annual national net income per capita available on the World Bank website.

The CashNetUSA team omitted nations from combined cost rankings if they did not have all 6 of the most premium products accessible to purchase. Nations were also omitted from the ranking of affordability that lacked data from the World Bank on annual national net income per capita.

The analysis of global search data reveals that people in 34 countries have their eye on a place in the sun, as houses for sale in Spain are the most frequently searched for in our research. France and Canada (both 13 countries) are also popular for “homes for sale”
searches.

Which are the countries whose residents are researching buying property where you live? The MoverDB team examined global Google searches for “houses for sale” in every country worldwide and identified the countries with the most searches per capita for properties in each nation.

They found that Brits are the keenest on a move abroad, with the highest search interest per capita for 22 countries. Irish nationals are similarly eager, with residents frequenting searches in 19 countries. Sweden is the nationality most likely to purchase a home in the U.S. There is a substantial Swedish line running through the United States: as long as 100 years ago, America could count 824 thousand second-generation Swedish Americans among its population.

Where Every State Wants to Buy Property in the U.S.

According to Statista, 6.1 million homes were sold in the United States in 2021 — the most since 2008’s financial crisis. A post-pandemic housing boom is happening across America, but which states are people most keen on buying property in?

Search data reveals that residents in 17 U.S. states are most interested in moving to Texas, while a further 16 states are considering Florida as a moving destination. The cost of living is 8% lower than the national wide average, and Texas is one of just 9 American states with no income tax — with Florida among the others. Traditionally a draw for pensioners, Florida’s climate and nature beauties has opened up to a young generation that can work from anywhere.

The Methodology Behind This Study

To create these maps of the world, the MoveDB team began by creating a list of nations and the languages spoken in those countries. The team then translated the phrase “house for sale {country}” into every language, with each country inserted into the sentence.

Next, the MoveDB team utilized Ahrefs and its Keyword Explorer tool. Operating the “Matching terms” feature, they assembled search volumes for every associated search query and linked each query with a particular country. This identified the most popular location to buy a home abroad for each nation.

Ultimately, they determined which nation is searched most frequently for properties in a given country by comparing the proportion of the number of searches to the population. In this stage, the MoveDB team calculated only the number of searches for the initially compiled keywords (i.e., the analysts didn’t use the “Matching terms” feature). The team repeated the steps for the American states instead using DataForSEO and its Google Ads API and created maps of the United States.

Studies indicate that when you spend money at local businesses, nearly half (48%) of that expenditure is reinvested into the local economy, which is significantly higher than the 13% reinvestment rate for major chains, as reported by the American Independent Business Alliance.

So which of America’s cities have the highest proportion of independent stores, and in which locations do chain brands dominate the commercial landscape? Merchant Machine has analyzed where more than 20,000 independent stores and chain stores are located across the U.S. to find out.

• In America, Detroit has the highest percentage (81.5%) of independent stores.

From New York’s 5th Avenue to Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles, some of America’s largest cities are a consumer’s paradise. Such is their popularity that both places (along with Miami) are noted among the Top 30 Global Retail Cities index produced by Savills. Independent stores, however, are the majority in 18 of the 20 largest population centers in the U.S., with Los Angeles (69.4%) having the highest proportion.

San Francisco also encourages independent retail, with 67.9% of businesses in the city belonging to small company owners.

Methodology

To find out which U.S. states and cities have the highest percentage of independent businesses, the Merchant Machine team studied Google Maps data for 175 American cities. They then pulled a sample of 20 thousand retail stores across clothing, shoes, hardware, and department store groups. To estimate the split of chain and independent stores by state and city, the team determined chain stores as those with more than three establishments.

To identify the location of each store, the Merchant Machine team got sets of geographic coordinates within the boundaries of each of the American cities. Then they utilized Google Maps API to obtain businesses that were laid out within a radius of each of these coordinates. The radius used for each metropolis was variable and depended on the area and density of the population of the city. Besides, they screened stores without buyer reviews or permanently closed.

The data is correct as of April 2023.

OnDeck has analyzed U.S. Census Bureau data for more than 900 thousand organizations in U.S. state and every major city to find out which proportion of business owners in every state and metropolitan area are owned by women. To be classified as an owner, a person needs to have at least 10% of a business.

Key Findings

• The highest proportion of female-owned companies in the United States can be found in the St. Louis Metro Area, Missouri, where 24.84 percent of registered businesses are founded by women, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2021 Annual Business Survey.
• A higher percentage of female-founded organizations are based in Alaska (24.7%) than any other U.S. state, closely followed by Colorado (23.8%).

Entrepreneurial activity worldwide, particularly for women, has been passive because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor revealed a 15% decrease in female-led initiatives between 2019 and 2020. Yet this does not paint the complete picture for women-owned companies across the United States, particularly in major cities.

One such place is St. Louis in Missouri. The study reveals that the Midwest city and larger metropolitan areas have the highest proportion of female-owned businesses in the U.S., with 24.84% of companies owned by women. The Riverfront City has a reputation for female entrepreneurship, with a Seek Capital analysis identifying over 2,700 women-owned startups, making a combined revenue of $150-500 million.

St. Louis is closely matched by Denver, Colorado, according to research shows that 24.80% of businesses in the Mile-High City have female owners. A local CBS News survey in 2020 discovered that 56% of women struggled to maintain their businesses through the depths of the Coronavirus pandemic. Still, Denver’s city council has responded with a new $637K entrepreneurship center directed at empowering startups led by women and ethnic minorities.

Though cities like St. Louis and Denver are making advancements, the country’s capital has the nation’s third-best track record with gender equality in entrepreneurship. The study reveals that 24.62% of ventures in Washington, D.C., have female proprietors. Their companies have come from city institutions, and a 2018 American Express analysis named the area among the 10 best cities for economic growth among women-owned businesses.

Not every U.S. city is making the same strides, however. Salt Lake City in Utah has the fewest female-owned businesses in the nation, with just 14.81% of companies possessed by women. While Utah Governor Spencer Cox claims that more can be done on an administrative level to support women in business and politics, a white paper from the Utah Women and Leadership Project argues Utah must find a way to enhance its gender equality record, calling for support to open 1,000 new female-owned companies in the state.

Are Women-Owned Businesses Thriving in the United States?

The analysis reveals that female ownership accounts for less than 25 percent of all business owners across every American city or state.

So why are females still underrepresented in business? A McKinsey report on women highlights racial and gender disparities in the wider workplace despite women demanding more from their employers.

Yet, these same struggles are identified in self-employment. Though one in five businesses in America is female-owned, they receive only 2 percent of all venture capital funding from investors. Undoubtedly, the COVID-19 pandemic set entrepreneurs back, yet the Bureau of Labor Statistics data illustrates that females were disproportionately affected — leading to many defining the downturn as a ‘shecession.’

However, there are more optimistic signs ahead. The study from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor in 2022 features that women now run a third of the world’s high-growth companies. Also, Pitchbook research of investments reveals that a record $40.4 billion of funding was raised across 2,661 deals by female-led initiatives.

Across the United States, can women become better represented in company ownership, making successful initiatives that become institutions within city businesses? Time will tell.

Methodology

The OnDeck team used the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2021 Annual Business Survey to get the total number of company proprietors and, specifically, women business owners, as well as the population number in every U.S. state and metropolitan area.

As per the U.S. Census, a company owner is defined as a person that controls at least 10% of the business, up to a maximum of four people owning the largest share.

The team estimated the percentage of female business proprietors within each geographical location’s total number of company owners. We then ranked U.S. states and the top 50 most populated U.S. metros by the percentage of female business owners. Delaware and Minnesota are excluded from the analysis because of the insufficient data.

But the world’s most popular streaming media service doesn’t get access to these tunes for free — in 2021 alone, Spotify shelled out seven billion dollars in royalties to the music industry. What you may not know is that users have a say in just how much is paid to music creators, with a pay-per-stream fee generated each time a song is played.

With this in mind, the data analysts at NetCredit wondered: based on local listeners worldwide, which songs are earning the most money in each nation on Spotify?

Key Findings

• Sunflower by Post Malone has earned the most money overall ($4.5 million from American listens)
• Blinding Lights by The Weeknd is the highest-earning song in 10 nations (more than any other individual song)
• Most of the highest-earning EDM songs are by a handful of artists, including Avicii, the Chainsmokers, Elton John, SAINt JHN, or Tiësto
• Meanwhile, top-earning hip-hop rap songs are often by local artists

With 80 million songs at the touch of a button, Spotify has made it easier than ever to enjoy your favorite music on the go. Artists reap the benefits, too, receiving a fee every time their tracks are played. But which song in every country is earning the biggest bucks thanks to local listeners?

The world map below reveals the overall highest-earning song in each country based on the money generated from Spotify streams. Some songs are the same across countries, like Blinding Lights by the Weeknd and LA CANCION by J Balvin, while others are unique, like Malta’s love for Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You.

The Highest-Earning Rock Song in Every Country

The top-earning rock song in 12 nations is Believer by Imagine Dragons, having racked up the most money ($662k) from listeners in Brazil, where the hit track was certified Diamond.

In 10 countries, Sweater Weather by American rock band the Neighbourhood is the highest-earning song, collecting $2.1 million from U.S. listeners alone.

The Highest-Earning Hip-Hop/Rap Songs in Every Country

In 14 countries, Drake’s 2016 hit One Dance made more money from local streams than any other hip-hop or rap song, earning the most in the United Kingdom ($948k), where the song was also the best-selling single of 2016.

Both INDUSTRY BABY and MONTERO by U.S. rapper Lil Nas X also appear, with the former earning the most money ($47,083) from Spotify streams in Japan. Lucid Dreams by Juice Wrld earned the most money overall ($4.3 million) thanks to American listeners.

The Highest-Earning EDM Song in Every Country

The world map below reveals the electronic dance music (EDM) song in every country that’s made the most money from Spotify streams. In 14 nations, Roses (Imanbek Remix) by SAINt JHN comes out on top, with streams in Canada generating the most money ($369k).

Elsewhere, mostly in South America, Cold Heart (Pnau remix) by Elton John is the highest-earning track. This song was Elton’s first no. 1 single on the U.K. charts in 16 years. The Chainsmokers, Tiesto, and Avicii also appear.

The Highest-Earning Latin Song in Every Country

Spotify has made it easy for Latin fans across the world to enjoy their favorite music, lining the pockets of top artists every time they press play. In 19 countries, Farruko’s 2021 hit Pepas has earned more money from Spotify streams than any other Latin song, banking the most ($411k) in Germany.

Luis Fonsi’s Despacito is the highest-earning in 17 countries, while in the U.S., I Like It by homegrown talent Cardi B and Latin icons J Balvin and Bad Bunny have made the most money ($54,104).

The Methodology Behind This Study

NetCredit set out to reveal the hit song in every nation that has earned its author the most money on Spotify based on its total stream count.
The NetCredit team retrieved each country’s ‘weekly totals’ chart from Kworb. These figures illustrate the total number of streams for songs that have spent at least one week in the top weekly charts of Spotify. Then the team used the Spotify API to sort artists into their associated genres:

1. Rock = any mention of rock
2. Hip-hop/rap = any mention of either genre
3. EDM = any mention of “electronic dance music” or “EDM”
4. Latin = any mention of Latin (e.g., Latin pop, Latin rock) or “reggaeton”

Then the NetCredit team defined the most streamed song for each genre. They multiplied the number of total streams for every song by Spotify’s payout-per-stream figure, which equals $0.005 per stream (data was taken from Ditto Music).

The data was gathered between January 6 and 11, 2023.
