<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;Los Angeles&#8221; can refer to the city, LA County, or the extensive Southern California region that <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Los_Angeles" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spans</a> seven counties and covers <strong>33,950 square miles (87,940 sq km)</strong>. LA County sits at the core. Orange County claims the southeast beaches. Riverside and San Bernardino counties sprawl into the eastern desert. Ventura County hugs the northwest coastline. San Diego and Kern counties contribute to their border areas. The entire territory is home to approximately 18.5 million people, ranking second in the US after New York&#8217;s metropolitan area.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Orange County has a population density of 3,345 people per square mile (1,292 per square kilometer). San Bernardino County covers 20,105 square miles / 52,072 sq km but has just 109 people per square mile (42 per sq km). You could drop 30 Orange Counties into San Bernardino County&#8217;s footprint. Orange County would still have more people total.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ventura County <a href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/CAVENT2POP" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">has</a> 835,000 residents living along the northern coast. In Orange County, 3.17 million people pay premium prices <a href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/CAORAN7POP" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">to stay</a> near the water. Riverside County <a href="https://www.builderonline.com/data-analysis/riverside-county-bucks-california-exodus-trend_o" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">added</a> 110,000 residents from 2020 to 2024. About 2.53 million people<a href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/CARIVE5POP" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> live there now</a>, concentrated along the I-15. Houses cost roughly half what they do in Orange County, so people trade beach access for something they can actually buy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By 2030, Los Angeles city is <a href="https://nchstats.com/los-angeles-population/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">expected</a> to reach a population of <strong>4.2 million</strong>, while LA County could <a href="https://www.teamca.org/ca-opportunity/regional-data/p/item/1537/los-angeles-county-regional-data" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">drop</a> to 12.8 million. One study <a href="https://ktla.com/news/local-news/more-than-1-4-million-residents-could-leave-l-a-county-by-2060-study-says/">suggests </a>LA County may lose<strong> 1.4 million people by 2060</strong>. The main reason is housing prices. The median home in LA County costs more than $800,000, while similar homes in Riverside County are under $600,000. When you add in higher taxes, expensive rent, and regular two-hour commutes, moving inland starts to make sense. Most people leaving LA County move to Riverside or San Bernardino counties.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s easy to imagine the Arctic Circle as a frozen wasteland dotted with polar bears and drifting icebergs &#8211; but there are actually quite a few cities up there, and some of them are surprisingly large. A map created by cartographer Kenneth Wong (<a href="https://x.com/Kenneth_KHW" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Kenneth_KHW</a>) for #30DayMapChallenge 2024 shows where people live above the 66°33′N latitude.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Murmansk stands out as the largest Arctic city. It was founded in 1916 as a port for ice-free access to the Atlantic via the Barents Sea. During WWII, it was a key supply point for the Allies. Even today,<a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Murmansk-Russia" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> it&#8217;s home</a> to Russia&#8217;s Northern Fleet and a hub for Arctic shipping</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vorkuta, meanwhile, grew around coal mines, originally developed by forced labor during the <a href="https://vividmaps.com/gulag/">Gulag</a> period. Now, the population is shrinking as mining jobs vanish and younger generations leave for southern cities.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Other Russian Arctic towns, like Monchegorsk and Yamburg, were built around heavy industry. Severomorsk is tightly connected to Russia&#8217;s naval operations and houses key military infrastructure. Salekhard, interestingly enough, is positioned right on the line of the Arctic Circle.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Norway&#8217;s Tromsø and Bodo, along with Finland&#8217;s Rovaniemi, are the largest Arctic settlements outside of Russia. Tromsø is known for its <a href="https://en.uit.no/startsida" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic University</a> and is a popular base for scientists and tourists. Rovaniemi markets itself as the &#8220;official&#8221; hometown of Santa Claus, but it&#8217;s also an administrative and logistical center for Finnish Lapland.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you&#8217;re scanning the map and thinking, &#8220;Most of these towns are in Russia,&#8221; you&#8217;re absolutely right. But why is that the case?</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The answer lies in the Soviet Union&#8217;s old blueprint. Northern expansion wasn&#8217;t left to chance—many Arctic towns were purpose-built in the mid-20th century to support mining, oil and gas development, and military outposts. Norilsk, for instance, sprang up near rich deposits of nickel. Murmansk, positioned on the Kola Peninsula, became Russia&#8217;s gateway to ice-free Atlantic waters. The pattern here isn&#8217;t coincidental—Soviet planners strategically established most of these communities to secure territorial claims and extract the region&#8217;s mineral wealth from beneath the permafrost. Maintaining cities in these conditions costs a fortune. Winter temperatures can drop below -40°C, which destroys concrete and warps metal infrastructure. Roads need constant repair because the ground expands and contracts with seasonal temperature swings. Getting groceries, fuel, or construction materials to these places often means flying everything in during winter or stockpiling supplies during the brief summer when ships can navigate Arctic waters.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The economics make sense when you consider what&#8217;s buried up there. Russia&#8217;s Arctic territories contain some of the world&#8217;s largest untapped oil and gas fields, not to mention nickel, copper, and rare earth minerals. Then there&#8217;s the Northern Sea Route &#8211; as ice melts, this shipping corridor could cut weeks off cargo trips between Europe and Asia. The Arctic Institute <a href="https://www.thearcticinstitute.org/country-backgrounders/russia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">puts</a> Russia&#8217;s northern population at over 2 million people, which dwarfs every other Arctic nation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You might think these towns exist in their own bubble, but they&#8217;re actually plugged into global events in surprising ways. When European countries started cutting Russian energy imports after 2022, Arctic workers felt it immediately through plant closures and budget cuts. <a href="https://www.highnorthnews.com/en/us-further-tightens-sanctions-screw-targeting-russian-arctic-gas-projects" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American sanctions</a> on Arctic drilling projects? That translates to canceled jobs in places like Yamburg.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Rio de Janeiro is a city that has been reshaped over centuries—not just culturally and architecturally, but also in its very geography. The map you&#8217;ve come across, overlaying an 1820s version of Rio onto the present-day city, is a fascinating way to visualize just how much the coastline and urban landscape have changed. Large portions of what is now central Rio were once water, later reclaimed through ambitious landfills and construction projects.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The transformation of Rio tells a story of remarkable growth. From a modest colonial city of about 50,000 inhabitants in 1820, Rio exploded to reach 1.2 million by 1940 and now houses over 6.7 million people in the city proper, with the metropolitan area approaching 13 million. This massive population growth drove the city&#8217;s physical expansion, pushing it to claim more land from the sea.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The city&#8217;s ethnic composition reflects waves of history: indigenous <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tupi_people" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tupi people</a> were joined by Portuguese colonizers, followed by enslaved Africans who made up nearly half the population by the 1800s. The late 19th and early 20th centuries brought new waves of European immigrants, particularly from Portugal, Italy, and Spain. Today, Rio is one of Brazil&#8217;s most diverse cities, with residents identifying as pardos (mixed-race) 39%, white 51%, black 9%, and Asian or <a href="https://vividmaps.com/indians-of-south-america/">indigenous</a> making up the remainder.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Look at the port area in the north of the overlay. Everything beyond those neat colonial-era blocks was underwater. Today it&#8217;s home to container ships and warehouses. The most dramatic change? <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flamengo,_Rio_de_Janeiro">Flamengo</a>. The historic map shows waves lapping at the shore where today you&#8217;ll find one of Rio&#8217;s most popular parks. Imagine telling a sailor from 1820 that people would be playing soccer and jogging where they once navigated their ships!</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The patterns of development in the city convey a distinct narrative. The original colonial core, visible in the map&#8217;s orderly grid, expanded through successive waves of urbanization. The wealthy gradually moved south to neighborhoods like Botafogo and Copacabana (both partially built on reclaimed land), while working-class communities grew in the north. The hills (morros) shown on the old map, once largely uninhabited, now host both upscale neighborhoods and favelas, informal settlements that began appearing in the late 1800s and now house nearly a quarter of Rio&#8217;s population.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This growth came at an environmental cost. Many of the mangroves and natural beaches shown on the 1820s map were sacrificed for urban development. The original coastline was pushed back hundreds of meters in some places, with major landfill projects continuing well into the 20th century. The city&#8217;s total area has grown from roughly 20 square kilometers (7.7 sq mi) in the 1820s to over 1,200 square kilometers (463 sq mi) today, though much of this expansion was inland rather than into the sea.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Looking at this overlay makes me wonder: what would those 1820s mapmakers think if they could see Rio today? And what will Rio look like 200 years from now, especially as we face rising sea levels? The ocean gave up this land once &#8211; will it want it back?</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Safest Cities in the United States</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The &#8220;safest&#8221; cities, according to <a href="https://www.hsdl.org/c/fbi-releases-2021-crime-statistics/#:~:text=Overall%20violent%20crime%20volume%20decreased,the%2029.4%25%20increase%20in%202020." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FBI data</a>, are mostly in Northeastern states, making up 40% of the ranking.</p>

As Boston expanded, particularly in the 19th and early 20th centuries, it faced challenges related to limited land area. To address this issue, extensive land reclamation projects were undertaken, fundamentally altering the city&#8217;s geography and coastline.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the most notable examples is the filling of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_Bay,_Boston" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Back Bay</a>, a tidal estuary, in the mid-1800s. The Back Bay area was transformed from marshlands into a thriving neighborhood with streets and buildings, effectively extending the city&#8217;s footprint. The <a href="https://esplanade.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Charles River Esplanade</a>, a popular park along the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_River" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Charles River</a>, is another result of land reclamation efforts. In addition, parts of Logan International Airport, located in East Boston, were constructed on filled land.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These reclamation projects were not without environmental and engineering challenges. They required the use of massive amounts of landfill material, often brought in from other locations. They also had implications for the local ecology and natural water systems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The maps below illustrate the change in the city&#8217;s shoreline from 1630 to 1999.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Alabama</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Eufaula is a settlement located in Barbour County. The place along the Chattahoochee River that is nowadays, Eufaula was inhabited by three Muscogee Creek tribes.  By the 1820s, the land was part of the Creek Indian Land and probably off-limits to white settlements. By 1827, enough illegal white settlements had appeared that the Creeks petitioned the national government to defend their property rights. But the national army was sent to the Eufaula territory to expel the homesteaders by force. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Creeks signed the Treaty of Washington in 1826, ceding most of their land in Georgia and eastern Alabama to the United States. By 1835, predominantly white settlers had bought the land surrounding the settlement.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Alaska</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kaktovik is a city in the North Slope Borough of Alaska with 239 people.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Until the late 19th century, Barter Island was a primary trade center for the Inupiat and was notably significant as a bartering place for Inupiat from Alaska and Inuit from Canada.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the early 21 century, Kaktovik became a traveler destination to view polar bears.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Arizona</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Supai is the capital of the Havasupai Indian Reservation located in Coconino County of Arizona and had a population of 208 in 2010. It is the only place where mules still carry out correspondence.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Supai is the most remote community in the contiguous U.S. It is reachable only by helicopter, by mule, or on foot. The town is 8 miles (13 kilometers) from the closest road and has no cars in the settlement.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Arkansas</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Saint Paul is a town in southern Madison County of Arkansas in the Upper Boston Mountains ecoregion with the natural vegetation of the oak-hickory forest. The community is situated along <a href="https://vividmaps.com/united-states-interstate-system/">Interstate</a> Highway 23 and Highway 16 on the bank of the upper White River.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The population of the settlement was 113, according to the 2010 Census. In 2000, there were 163 people, 70 households, and 44 families living in the townlet.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">California</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Baker is a census-designated place located in San Bernardino County of California in the Mojave Desert at the Death Valley Road. It has a population of 735.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Baker was established as a rail station on the Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad in 1908 and was named for Richard C. Baker, company partner of Francis Marion Smith in constructing the railway.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Meeker is the most populous municipality of Rio Blanco County in northwestern Colorado, with 2,475 settlers. The town is primarily an agricultural community situated in the broad fertile vale of the White River.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The settlement is named for Nathan Meeker, the American Indian Agent who was murdered and 11 other white citizens by White River Ute Indians in 1879.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Connecticut</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Salem is a settlement in New London County. The Mohegan people initially settled in the area. The first settlement of English origin in present-day Salem was founded in 1664. It is one of the <a href="https://vividmaps.com/us-oldest-city/">oldest settlements</a> in Connecticut. The town was named New Salem Parish in praise of Colonel Samuel Browne, the most prominent landowner.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over the decades, Salem has gradually advanced from a tiny and remote farming settlement to a bedroom community. According to the 2020 census, the population of the town is 4,213.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The town is uncommon among Delaware settlements as the city was built around a circle instead of the more typical park square. In the center of the town is located a little green park with a fountain. The town&#8217;s population is 6,422.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Newberry was established in 1882. The settlement was named in praise of John Stoughton Newberry.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Angle Inlet is a settlement in Lake of the Woods County with a population of only 54, according to the 2020 census. It is the northernmost settlement in the contiguous U.S., located north of the 49th parallel. The French constructed Fort Saint Charles close by in 1732.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tylertown is a settlement in Walthall County. The townlet of Tylertown was first known as the Magee Settlement. It was inhabited by colonists of the Magee and Thornhill families who came from South Carolina.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The settlement was named Conerly from 1848 to 1879 and then was renamed Tyler Town in the glory of William G. Tyler.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Salem is located in Dent County, with a population of 4,608 in 2020.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The settlement&#8217;s name is obtained from the Hebrew word Shalom, meaning &#8220;peace.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vicinity of Selem was settled between 1818 and 1829. In 1881, Salem was organized as a town.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Montana</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Jordan is a town in Garfield County. According to the 2020 Census, the population of the settlement is 356.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The to was established in 189 by hunter Arthur Jordan. In 1899, in the settlement, a post office was built. Later, other buildings appeared around the post office.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hyannis is a settlement in Grant County. It is centrally situated in the vast, unique, and isolated region of grasslands recognized as the Sandhills of Nebraska at the intersection of highways NSH 61 and NSH 2. A railway official called the settlement after the townlet of Hyannis in Massachusetts.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Nevada</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Owyhee is a settlement in Elko County. It is the principal town of the governmentally acknowledged Shoshone-Paiute tribe&#8217;s Duck Valley Indian Reservation, covering parts of northern Nevada and southern Idaho. Most of the population of Owyhee is Native American.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">New Hampshire</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Colebrook is a settlement in Coös County with a population of 2,084 in 2020. The town is located in the Great North Woods Region; the Connecticut River bounds the city to the west. Colebrook is home to Beaver Brook Falls Natural Area.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Initially, the settlement was named &#8220;Dryden&#8221; to honor the English poet John Dryden. Because of the incapability of its initial beneficiaries to inhabit the remote area, however, it was re-granted in 1770 by Colonial Governor John Wentworth, who renamed the settlement from &#8220;Dryden&#8221; to &#8220;Colebrook&#8221; to honor Sir George Colebrooke, the East India Company&#8217;s chairperson of the board.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">New Jersey</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Flemington is situated in Hunterdon County, in the Amwell and the Raritan Valleys.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before Europeans, the territory that nowadays comprises Flemington was the land of the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. In 1712, the Flemington territory was gained by William Penn and Daniel Coxe. The town was established in 1870 and named for Samuel Fleming.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">New Mexico</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lake Valley settlement in New Mexico <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://sierracountynewmexico.info/attractions/lake-valley-new-mexico/" target="_blank">was named</a> for prehistoric lakebeds nearby. The town was established in 1878 with the finding of silver in the region. At the best of times, the population of the settlement was 4,000.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Manganese mining conducted a short rebirth which ended in 1955. The last permanent residents of the settlement were gone in 1994, leaving behind an authentic ghost town.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">New York</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The settlement of Indian Lake in Hamilton County was founded in 1858. The name is from a lake of the same name mainly located inside the town.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 1861, the settlement was extended using territory from the municipalities of Gilman and Lake Pleasant.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">North Carolina</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ocracoke is a settlement situated in Hyde County at the southern end of Ocracoke Island. According to the census, the population of the town was 797 people.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ocracoke Island was the place of the pirate Blackbeard&#8217;s death in 1718. Today the economy of the isle is driven by tourism and fishing.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">North Dakota</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amidon,_North_Dakota" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Amidon</a> was the second-smallest incorporated county with its population of 20, behind Brewster in Nebraska, with a population of 17. In 2000, Amidon had 26 people to Brewster&#8217;s 29.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Amidon was established in 1910 at the expected terminus of a Milwaukee Road branch line that branched from the railroad&#8217;s Pacific Extension in McLaughlin (South Dakota).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The settlement is named after Charles F. Amidon, a federal judge for the U.S. District Court for North Dakota.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Ohio</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Richmond Dale is situated in Ross County along U.S. Route 35.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The settlement was founded in 1811. The town gets its name from Richmond (Virginia), the native house of a first settler.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kenton is the westernmost settlement in Oklahoma, located in Cimarron County. The town has only 17 residents.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hohenwald is a town in Lewis County, Tennessee. &#8220;Hohenwald&#8221; is a German word that signifies &#8220;High Forest.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The settlement was established in 1878 and later combined with a city named &#8220;New Switzerland&#8221; to the south. New Switzerland was established in 1894 by Swiss settlers.</p>

The settlement was established in 1882 as a split point for the Southern Pacific Railroad, where refueling and workforce shifts on its significant transcontinental way took place. Wool production on surrounding farms developed a substantial part of the economy. The community entered into an economic downfall when goats and sheep and operations dropped.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Utah</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hanksville is a small settlement located in Wayne County, in the frigid desert ecological region of Colorado Plateau.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The settlement was inhabited in 1882 and known for a period for the name assigned to the surrounding vicinity, Graves Valley. Later, in 1885 the town was renamed after an earlier immigrant, Ebenezer Hanks.</p>
