New York City is known for its cultural diversity and has a rich history of immigration, which has led to a varied and dynamic ethnic makeup. According to the United States Census Bureau, as of 2020, the estimated population of New York City was 8,804,190 people.

New York City’s Hispanic population is one of the largest and most diverse in the United States. According to the 2020 Census Bureau data, Hispanics make up 29.8% of the city’s population, which translates to approximately 2.6 million people.

The Hispanic population in New York City is made up of individuals with roots in many different countries, including Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, and many others. Puerto Ricans make up the largest single Hispanic group in the city, followed by Dominicans, Mexicans, and Ecuadorians.

In 1940, there were 61,463 persons of Puerto Rican birth in NYC; by 1960, the number had reached 429,710,7. At the latter date in Manhattan and the Bronx, about 13% of the total population was of Puerto Rican origin.

The Hispanic community in New York City is vibrant and diverse, with a rich cultural heritage. Many neighborhoods in the city have a strong Hispanic presence, such as Washington Heights, which is known for its large Dominican population, and East Harlem, which has a significant Puerto Rican community.

Hispanic culture is evident throughout the city in various ways, including through music, food, and art. Salsa, merengue, and bachata music are popular among many Hispanics in the city, and there are numerous Latin dance clubs and restaurants throughout the city. Hispanic cuisine is also prevalent in New York City, with many restaurants serving traditional dishes such as empanadas, tamales, and arroz con pollo.

Below is the map of the Hispanic population of NYC.

The Hispanic population in New York City is distributed across the five boroughs, although some neighborhoods have a larger concentration of Hispanics than others. Here is a breakdown of how the Hispanic population is distributed across the boroughs:

The Bronx: The Bronx has the largest percentage of Hispanics of any borough, with 55.8% of the population identifying as Hispanic or Latino. The largest Hispanic groups in the Bronx are Puerto Ricans and Dominicans.

Brooklyn: Hispanics make up 20.6% of Brooklyn’s population, with the largest groups being Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and Mexicans.

Manhattan: Hispanics make up 24.6% of Manhattan’s population, with the largest groups being Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, and Mexicans. East Harlem and Washington Heights are two neighborhoods in Manhattan with a significant Hispanic population.

Queens: Hispanics make up 28.7% of Queens’ population, with the largest groups being Ecuadorians, Colombians, Mexicans, and Dominicans.

Staten Island: Hispanics make up 18.8% of Staten Island’s population, with the largest groups being Puerto Ricans and Mexicans.

Overall, the Hispanic population in New York City is dispersed throughout the city, with significant populations in neighborhoods such as East Harlem, Washington Heights, and the South Bronx. Many Hispanic immigrants to New York City settled in these areas due to the availability of affordable housing and the presence of existing Hispanic communities. Additionally, many Hispanic immigrants have established their own businesses and community organizations in these areas, further contributing to the growth and spread of the Hispanic population throughout the city.

The standard electorate map tends to be the choropleth style. These maps will typically fill an entire constituency with the color of the winning party. Although this gives a definitive guide of seat winners, it fails to visualize any diversity of voting within the constituency and the number of ballots cast. The dot density approach has the benefit of representing votes for parties that did not win in each constituency. It also does not suffer from the tendency of over-emphasising the influence of large, yet sparsely populated areas, as color coverage, is dictated by voter count, not constituency area size.

1 dot = approximately 25 people age 25+

Educational Attainment in America is an interactive dot-density map of the US population aged 25 and over by educational attainment. Data are summarised into five categories, which represent the highest education attained: less than high school; high school or equivalent; some college or associate’s degree; bachelor’s degree; and graduate degree. Data are from the 2011-2015 American Community Survey Table B15003, distributed by NHGIS. Dot locations are approximate and do not represent the locations of individuals. Also, as the ACS is a survey of the US population, its estimates are subject to a margin of error.

Data preparation was completed in the R and Python programming languages, with heavy reliance on the arcpy site package via ArcGIS Pro and the sf R package. The map itself is hosted by Mapbox and designed with Mapbox GL JS and dimple.js. Major features of the map are described below; a manuscript describing the full methodology is currently in progress.

1. Dasymetric dot density mapping. The map is a dasymetric dot density map, which means that the dots are placed in relationship to ancillary geographic information that in this case describes the underlying population surface. Educational attainment data are aggregated at the Census tract level, and dots are placed randomly within Census tracts. Prior to the dot placement, however, Census blocks with no population in 2010 were erased from the Census tract geographies, meaning that dots are constrained to areas within tracts that had a measured population in 2010. Given the temporal difference between the block data and tract data, some areas that went from 0 population to populated between 2010 and 2015 may be excluded.

2. Zoom-dependent data and styling. To facilitate clarity at different zoom levels, the map displays progressively fewer dots as the user zooms out. When fully zoomed in, one dot represents approximately 25 people; when fully zoomed out, one dot represents approximately 500 people. Additionally, dot sizes increase as the user zooms in.

3. Filter data with an interactive legend. One issue with dot-density maps is that dots can occlude other dots, especially in high-density areas like Manhattan. To help resolve this, users can click entries in the legend to turn on and off dots for each category.

4. Summarise visible data with an interactive chart. While dot-density maps are effective at giving a general sense of the distribution of a multivariate attribute, it can be difficult for users to summarise the visible data. By clicking the corresponding button, the map will tabulate the visible dots on the screen and provide a percentage breakdown of the visible dots by category on a chart in the sidebar.

Given the size of the raw and derived data used for this map (over 50 GB), data are not provided in this repository. The required data from NHGIS are as follows:

– 2011-2015 US Census tract geography
– 2011-2015 ACS table B15003, Educational Attainment for the Population 25 Years and Over, for Census tracts;
– 2010 US Census block geography for all 50 states plus DC;
– 2010 US Census table P1, Total Population, for Census blocks.
– Running the following scripts in order, if all requisite software is installed, will reproduce the data. Note that you must use ArcGIS Pro’s conda environment to get access to arcpy. Also, you would – need to change the NHGIS folder paths and file names to your own.

1. R/unzip_blocks.R
2. R/process_blocks.R
3. python/erase_from_tracts.py
4. R/combine_dasymetric_tracts.R
5. python/usa_dots.py

This exploratory map shows data from the fantastic Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) produced by the European Commission. Integrating huge volumes of satellite data with national census data, the GHSL has applications for a wide range of research and policy related to urban growth, development and sustainability, and is available as open data. The dataset encourages understanding of the complex hierarchy of human settlement, rather than making simple rural-urban divisions. Each cell represents population density at either 1km resolution or 250m resolution depending on the zoom level.

Megaregions and Diverse Urban Forms
In the early 20th century, geographers like Patrick Geddes observed how rail and road networks were allowing rapidly growing cities to fuse together into vast sprawling conurbations. A classic example is the northeastern seaboard of the USA (click on links to focus the map), a megalopolis as Gottman termed it, stretching hundreds of miles from Washington to Boston, with around 55m people.

The GHSL data shows how widespread urban megaregions have become. China has many, the largest being the Pearl River Delta region with around 60m people, and the Yangtze River Delta megaregion with around 70m.

Another related form of megaregion comes from areas of dense agriculture that begin to urbanise with loser patterns of small scale industry. McGee first used the term desakota (“village-city”) in relation to the incredible form of Java in Indonesia, with the densities of urban hinterlands greatly exceeding Western cities but with activity patterns remaining dispersed and linked to agriculture. Similar desakota patterns can be seen in Kolkata, Dhaka, Lahore and Beijing regions, and increasingly in several regions of Sub-Saharan Africa including Nigeria and surrounding Lake Victoria, though with much diversity in each case.

Density and Development
Urban densities are linked to cultures of living, with regions like Latin America and East Asia noted for high density urban forms. Higher population densities can also be linked to affluence, as in poorer countries transport infrastructure is less developed and housing used more intensively. The highest density cities in the world are in South and South East Asia, such as Mumbai, Dhaka and Manila (note this depends how density is measured- see the Analysis page).

But these cities are more prosperous than neighbouring rural areas, and high densities can also be linked to affluence. Singapore, Hong Kong and Seoul combine extremely high densities with very high levels of prosperity. The richest large western cities, like London, Paris, New York and San Francisco are also relatively high density and intensifying.

Another important aspect of density is its relationship with travel demand and energy use. There are many examples of huge urban regions at very low densities, most evidently in the USA with metro regions such as Atlanta and Houston. Unsurprisingly these cities have the highest rates of transport energy use and carbon emissions in the world.

Sprawl is not however limited to the USA, and similar forms at a smaller scale can be seen in countries like Australia and Canada. The industrial heartland of Europe that follows the river Rhine through western Germany to Belgium and the Netherlands, is notably dispersed and low density.

Traces of Ancient Civilisations
As well as exploring contemporary urbanism, many historic patterns remain engraved in the landscape of human settlement. Ancient cities first appeared by fertile rivers that could support the intensive agricultre needed to feed an urban population. Egypt spectacularly displays the contrast between the arid Sahara and the rich lands fertilised by the Nile’s annual inundation. This landscape has supported urban civilisation for around 5000 years.

The oldest cities we know of were on the Tigris and Euphrates river deltas, near modern day Basra in Iraq. Another important ancient civilisation grew around the Indus Valley near Hyderabad in modern day Pakistan.

As well as rivers, some ancient transport links are visible in modern settlement patterns. The Roman road Via Aemilia cut across Northern Italy, through what is now Bologna and Parma. Its precise straight form is still evident 2000 years after its completion.

Hillary carried all of Michigan in 2008 – but she was the only major
candidate on the ballot. Obama, Edwards, and Richardson had removed
their names following a pledge to ignore the state’s primary after it
violated party rules. Hillary ended up winning 55% of the vote across
the state.

For the first time, new USGS maps identify potential ground-shaking hazards from both human-induced and natural earthquakes. In the past, USGS maps only identified natural earthquake hazards.

This is also the first one-year outlook for the nation’s earthquake hazards, and is a supplement to existing USGS assessments that provide a 50-year forecast

The report shows that approximately 7 million people live and work in areas of the central and eastern U.S. (CEUS) with potential for damaging shaking from induced seismicity. Within a few portions of the CEUS, the chance of damage from all types of earthquakes is similar to that of natural earthquakes in high-hazard areas of California.

“By including human-induced events, our assessment of earthquake hazards has significantly increased in parts of the U.S.,” said Mark Petersen, Chief of the USGS National Seismic Hazard Mapping Project. “This research also shows that much more of the nation faces a significant chance of having damaging earthquakes over the next year, whether natural or human-induced.”

Induced earthquakes are triggered by human activities, with wastewater disposal being the primary cause for recent events in many areas of the CEUS. Wastewater from oil and gas production operations can be disposed of by injecting it into deep underground wells, below aquifers that provide drinking water.

USGS scientists only distinguished between human-induced and natural seismicity in the CEUS. In the west, scientists categorized all earthquakes as natural. Scientists also used a different methodology in looking at the CEUS compared to the west.

The most significant hazards from induced seismicity are in six states,
listed in order from highest to lowest potential hazard: Oklahoma,
Kansas, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico and Arkansas. Oklahoma and Texas
have the largest populations exposed to induced earthquakes.

ARCTIC SEA ICE EXTENT
February 2016 sea ice extent reached a record low for the second consecutive month. February 2016 sea ice extent was 7.5 percent below the 1981 -2010 average—the smallest February sea ice extent since satellite records began in 1979.

ANTARCTIC SEA ICE EXTENT
February 2016 sea ice extent was 9.5 percent below the 1981 -2010 average— the smallest February extent since 2011 and the sixth smallest February sea ice extent on record.

TROPICAL CYCLONE WINSTON
(February 7th-March 3rd 2016)
Maximum winds – 285 km/hr Winston was one of the strongest cyclones to make landfall on Fiji on record. Winston caused significant damage as it hit the island as a Category 5 storm.

FINLAND
Wetter-than-average conditions were observed across Finland in February.
Some locations received two to three times the monthly average. Overall, the nation had its second wettest February, behind 1990.

PACIFIC ISLANDS
Several Pacific Islands were experiencing devastating drought conditions. Several U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands had record or near-record dryness during February 2016. The dry conditions experienced in the Marshall Islands forced the government to issue a State of Disaster.

NORTH AMERICA
February 2016 was the warmest February since 2000 and the fourth warmest since continental records began in 1910.

CONTIGUOUS UNITES STATES
Warmer to much-warmer-than average conditions engulfed much of the contiguous U.S. during February 2016. This was the warmest February since 2000 and the seventh warmest since national records began in 1895. Drought conditions deteriorated across the Southern Plains and Southwest.

ALASKA
Alaska’s February 2016 temperature was 6.9°C (12.4°F) above average. This was the warmest February since statewide records began in 1925.

SOUTH AMERICA
Much-warmer-than-average conditions were present across most of the continent, with some locations experiencing record warmth. This resutled in the warmest February since 1910.
Much of northern and northeastern South America had below-average precipitation, meanwhile much of southern South America had wetter-than-average conditions during February 2016.

AUSTRALIA
Warmer and drier-than-average conditions were present across much of Australia. Overall, Australia had its ninth warmest February. New South Wales had its driest February since 1978. J

NEW ZEALAND
Temperatures were much-above-average, resulting in the second warmest February and second warmest month for any month on record, behind February 1988.

ASIA
