North America’s ethnic composition is unlike anywhere else. Native peoples lived here for millennia before ships arrived from Europe in the 1600s. Mexicans moved northward. Asians came across the Pacific. Slave ships forcibly brought millions of Africans. This map, created by @geodatarankings, shows what people reported when asked about their ancestry.

Twenty-one states are German. From Pennsylvania to Oregon, the Midwest runs German. Wisconsin. Oregon. Montana. Wyoming. Colorado. Both Dakotas. Nebraska. Kansas. Minnesota. Iowa. Missouri. Illinois. Indiana. Michigan. Ohio. Pennsylvania. West Virginia. Florida. Alaska. Forty-one million Americans say German, which is 12% of everyone. Wisconsin comes in at 36%. North Dakota hits 34%, South Dakota 32%.

Most fled Europe in the 1800s when revolutions collapsed and economies failed. They brought beer brewing, Christmas trees, kindergarten, hamburgers, hot dogs.

Five Southwest states go Mexican. California. Nevada. Arizona. New Mexico. Texas. That’s 11% of the US population.

Nine Southern states are African American. Arkansas. Louisiana. Mississippi. Alabama. Georgia. South Carolina. North Carolina. Virginia. Maryland. DC. These were the heaviest slavery states.

Three states report English. Idaho. Utah. Maine. English converts to Mormonism settled Utah during the 1800s.

Oklahoma is American Indian. The only state where Native ancestry leads.

Kentucky and Tennessee just say “United States.” Families there have been around so long Europe seems irrelevant.

Three Northeast states are Italian. New York. Connecticut. New Jersey. About 18 million Americans report Italian ancestry. Connecticut reaches 15.2%, Rhode Island 14.6%, New Jersey 13.4%. Southern Italians came between 1880 and 1920. Sicily, Campania, Calabria sent the most people. They worked factories and construction sites, dug subway tunnels, built skyscrapers.

Five New England states go Irish. Vermont. New Hampshire. Massachusetts. Rhode Island. Delaware. About 11% of Americans say Irish, which actually outnumbers Ireland’s population of 5 million today. The 1840s potato famine caused the exodus.

Hawaii reports Filipino. The only state with Asian ancestry on top. Filipino workers came for the sugar plantations around 1900.

This comes from what people told census workers. Some listed multiple ancestries. Others just wrote “American.”

Looking at where European ancestry groups settled across the United States reveals fascinating geographic patterns that still influence communities today. Two detailed maps help visualize this historical legacy from different angles.

This visualization by Reddit user false_friends shows the connection between Americans and their European countries of origin. The numbers are impressive: 46 million Americans claim British ancestry, 44 million identify with German heritage, 38 million with Irish roots, 16 million with Italian background, about 8 million with French ancestry, and 3.8 million with Norwegian connections. The 2020 Census data helps us understand just how substantial these European influences remain in modern America.

The county-level map created by Reddit user Reveal_Rich provides a more detailed geographic picture, showing which European ancestry group dominates in each U.S. county. According to this 2020 Census-based visualization, English ancestry (46.5 million Americans) forms the largest group, followed by German (44.9 million), Irish (38.5 million), and Spanish ancestry (31.5 million, with Spanish ancestry counted as white Hispanics). The color-coding reveals clear regional patterns that echo historical settlement decisions made generations ago.

Where Different European Groups Settled

When these maps are examined together, some distinct patterns emerge:

English (46.5 million)

English ancestry dominates across much of the Southeast, creating a blue band across the Appalachian South and extending through many Southern states. This reflects both the earliest colonial settlements (starting with Jamestown in 1607) and continued migration westward. Though initially concentrated along the Eastern Seaboard, English Americans eventually spread throughout the country, establishing themselves as the cultural foundation in many regions.

German (44.9 million)

The light green belt across the Midwest shows the strong German presence in Wisconsin, Minnesota, the Dakotas, Iowa, Nebraska, and Missouri. German immigration picked up significantly between 1840-1880, as political changes in Europe and economic opportunities in America’s heartland attracted farmers and craftspeople. Many German families were drawn to the Midwest’s rich soil and purchased farmland that reminded them of their homeland.

Irish (38.5 million)

Irish ancestry appears prominently in the Northeast, particularly Massachusetts, parts of New York, and Pennsylvania. This pattern largely reflects the massive immigration wave during and after the potato famine of 1845-1852, when approximately one million Irish people came to America. Irish immigrants often settled in cities where they could find immediate work in factories, construction, and service industries.

Spanish (31.5 million)

Spanish ancestry (defined in this map as white Hispanic populations) concentrates in the Southwest, particularly Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, and Florida. This reflects both early Spanish colonial presence dating back to the 1500s and more recent immigration from Latin American countries. The border regions show especially strong Hispanic heritage.

Italian (16.8 million)

Italian Americans cluster primarily in the Northeast—especially New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Connecticut—with additional communities in Illinois, California, and other urban centers. Most Italian immigration happened between 1880-1920, with newcomers typically settling in cities where industrial jobs were available and where family members or people from their home regions had already established communities.

French (7.9 million)

French ancestry shows up clearly in Louisiana (reflecting the Acadian/Cajun settlement after their expulsion from Canada in the 1750s), northern Maine, and parts of Vermont and New Hampshire. These patterns come from several different migration waves, including early colonization efforts, the Acadian migration, and later movement from Quebec during industrialization.

Norwegian (3.8 million)

The upper Midwest, especially Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin, shows strong Norwegian heritage. Norwegian immigration peaked between 1880-1910, with families often choosing this region because its lakes, forests, and climate resembled parts of Norway and supported familiar farming practices.

How Things Are Changing

While these maps capture lasting historical patterns, America’s ancestry landscape continues to evolve:

More Americans now identify with multiple ancestry groups rather than a single heritage. This multi-ethnic identification is gradually reshaping these geographic patterns over time.

People continue to move around the country. The significant migration toward Sun Belt states has brought many Americans with Northern European ancestry to regions historically dominated by different groups.

New immigration from non-European countries is changing the demographic makeup of many counties, particularly in urban areas and coastal regions. These newer community members add new dimensions to America’s cultural geography.

Despite these changes, the geographic patterns shown in these maps demonstrate how powerfully immigration history continues to influence regional identity across America. From place names to local festivals, food traditions to architectural styles, the cultural contributions of various European groups remain visible in communities nationwide.

What’s your family’s European ancestry story? Do you live in an area that reflects your heritage background, or has your family moved beyond its initial settlement region? Share your experiences in the comments below.

When you look at the remarkable success of Jewish Americans in entertainment, technology, and finance, there’s a fascinating pattern in where their families came from. The dots on this map above created by Reddit user: VonUndZuDerTann tell a story that goes far beyond individual family histories – it reveals why so many successful Jewish Americans trace their roots to this specific region of Eastern Europe.

The answer lies in the Pale of Settlement, a western region of Imperial Russia where Jews were legally permitted to live from 1791 to 1917. This vast territory encompassed much of present-day Lithuania, Belarus, Poland, Moldova, Ukraine, and parts of western Russia. By the late 19th century, nearly five million Jews lived in the Pale – the largest Jewish population in the world at that time.

Life in the Pale fostered several key characteristics that would later fuel success in America. Jewish communities placed enormous emphasis on education, particularly on literacy and critical thinking through Torah study. Even poor families would scrape together money for their children’s education. This cultural focus on learning and intellectual achievement would prove invaluable in America.

The restrictions on land ownership and many professions meant that Jews in the Pale became particularly adept at commerce, trading, and various forms of entrepreneurship. Many worked as merchants, craftsmen, or middlemen between rural and urban areas. These business skills and entrepreneurial mindset would serve their descendants well in America.

Look at the Warner brothers, who came from Krasnosielc in Poland. Their family’s experience as traveling merchants selling goods between villages likely contributed to their later success in film distribution and eventually production. Or consider the Goldman and Sachs families from Bad Kissingen and Trappstadt in Germany – regions where Jews had developed sophisticated financial and trading networks.

The waves of immigration from these regions to America weren’t random. Between 1881 and 1924, over two million Jews left Eastern Europe, driven by pogroms, discrimination, and poverty. The majority came to America, bringing with them not just dreams but generations of accumulated knowledge in business, trade, and education.

This explains why we see such a concentration of successful Jewish Americans with roots in Ukraine. From Steven Spielberg’s family in Kamianets-Podilskyi to Mark Zuckerberg’s in Rozdil, these families came from communities that had developed remarkable resilience and adaptability. The same is true for Jerry Seinfeld’s ancestors from Mariyampil’ and Bob Dylan’s from Odessa.

The tech pioneers on our map – Sergey Brin from Yavora, Sam Altman from Ptohsk, Mark Cuban from Malyn – are continuing a long tradition of innovation and adaptation that their ancestors developed in the Pale. Their families’ experiences navigating restrictions and finding creative solutions to problems became valuable assets in America’s dynamic economy.

Today’s success stories – whether in Silicon Valley, Hollywood, or Wall Street – aren’t just about individual talent. They’re the result of cultural values and skills developed over generations: emphasis on education, adaptability, entrepreneurial thinking, and resilience in the face of adversity. These qualities, honed in the cities and shtetls of Eastern Europe, found fertile ground in America’s meritocratic society.

What family stories do you know about? Whether your ancestors came from the Pale of Settlement or elsewhere, share your immigration story in the comments below. These personal histories help us understand how cultural heritage shapes success across generations.

The United States is becoming increasingly diverse, with each decade bringing significant shifts in the population makeup of the country. I’ve created several maps using U.S. Census Bureau data and ArcGIS to explore how different racial and ethnic groups have spread across U.S. counties over the past three decades.

Watch as the landscape transforms from 1990 to 2022. This map reveals where non-Hispanic whites, Black Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans make up the majority of county populations. The patterns tell fascinating stories about our nation’s changing face.

Slide between 1990 and 2022 to explore these dramatic changes county by county. You’ll notice some surprising shifts – and some areas that have remained remarkably stable.

A Changing Nation in Numbers

The story these maps tell is backed by striking statistics. In 1950, the U.S. population was markedly different: non-Hispanic whites made up 89.5%, Hispanic Americans just 2.6%, Black Americans 10%, and Native Americans less than 0.2%. Today, non-Hispanic whites make up 58.4%, Hispanic Americans represent 18.7%, Black Americans comprise 13.6%, and Native Americans account for 2.09% of the population.

Regional Stories

Each region of the country tells its own unique story:

The Deep South’s Black-majority counties trace patterns set during the 19th century, creating a distinct corridor that remains visible today. These communities have deep historical roots, many dating back to the aftermath of the Civil War.

Hispanic-majority counties, once concentrated in the Southwest, are emerging in new areas. This shift reflects changing migration patterns and growing communities across the country.

Native American-majority counties appear primarily in the Southwest and Great Plains, often corresponding to reservation lands and historically significant tribal areas.

The Northeast and Midwest show the most dramatic changes. While still home to many majority-white counties, these regions are experiencing rapid diversification, especially around major urban centers.

Looking to 2045

Census Bureau projections paint a picture of even greater diversity ahead:

Non-Hispanic whites: 49.7%

Hispanic Americans: 24.6%

Black Americans: 13.1%

Asian Americans: 9.1%

These changes are already visible at the state level. California, Hawaii, and New Mexico have already become “minority-majority” states, with Texas and Nevada likely to follow soon. Major cities across the country are leading this transformation, creating vibrant multicultural communities that offer a glimpse of America’s future.

If you don’t have a wall map to follow these geographic changes, here are some excellent options I recommend from Amazon:

The United States has always been shaped by its diverse population. Today, non-Hispanic white Americans—those who identify as white and not of Hispanic or Latino origin—make up 59.3% of the U.S. population, or roughly 192 million people, according to Census Bureau data. Although this percentage has declined steadily over the past few decades—from 89.5% in 1950 and 75% in 1990 to 59.3% in 2022—non-Hispanic white Americans still represent the majority of the U.S. population.

Using the latest Census Bureau data and ArcGIS mapping software, I’ve created two animated maps that tell an interesting story about where non-Hispanic white Americans live. The first map above shows the percentage distribution across U.S. counties, ranging from areas where they make up less than 1% of the population to counties where they represent nearly the entire population.

Looking at the regional patterns, some clear geographic trends emerge. The Northeast and Midwest tend to have higher concentrations, particularly in rural areas. Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire stand out, with non-Hispanic whites making up over 90% of the population in many counties. In contrast, the Southeast and Southwest show much more diversity, with lower percentages in many areas.

The second animated map focuses specifically on counties where non-Hispanic whites make up 90% or more of the population, tracking changes from 1990 to 2022. This visualization reveals how these demographic strongholds have shifted over three decades. The most striking change is the steady decrease in the number of these high-concentration counties, particularly in the Upper Midwest and Great Plains states.

What’s driving these changes? Several factors are at play, according to demographic researchers at the Brookings Institution. Immigration patterns, different birth rates among various ethnic groups, and increasing racial and ethnic intermarriage all contribute to the shifting demographics.

Looking ahead, projections from the Census Bureau suggest that by 2045, non-Hispanic whites will no longer be the majority in America. However, they will remain the largest single ethnic group, representing about 49.7% of the population. This change will likely be most noticeable in urban areas first, while rural regions may maintain their current demographic makeup for longer periods.

Some interesting facts about non-Hispanic white population trends:

The median age of this group (44 years) is higher than the national median (38 years), according to the Pew Research Center. This reflects an aging demographic with lower birth rates compared to other groups.

Non-Hispanic white populations have seen significant declines in rural counties, particularly in the Great Plains and Midwest, while strengthening in suburban and exurban areas surrounding major cities.

States like Hawaii, California, and New Mexico already have non-Hispanic white populations below 50%

A fascinating world map is shedding light on the diversity of national identities across the globe. This visualization highlights the countries where no single ethnic group holds a majority, challenging the common perception of nations as homogeneous entities.

According to the map, the countries with no dominant ethnic group (defined as those with no ethnic group exceeding 50% of the population) include Afghanistan, India, Nepal, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, the Philippines, Indonesia, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. Interestingly, most of the sub-Saharan African nations also fall into this category.

The reasons behind the lack of ethnic majorities in these countries can be attributed to historical migration patterns, the legacy of colonialism, and the presence of indigenous populations that have maintained their distinct identities. Colonial-era borders often brought together diverse ethnic groups within a single nation, leading to the rich tapestry of cultures we see today.

This remarkable map offers a fascinating glimpse into the complex ethnic landscapes of our world. It invites us to rethink our preconceptions about national identities and to celebrate the diversity that arises from the coexistence of multiple ethnic groups within a single country.

The story of Native Americans spans thousands of years across the landscapes of North America. Today, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey, nearly 10.5 million people in the United States identify as American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) alone or in combination with another race, representing 3.1% of the total U.S. population. These diverse communities represent 574 federally recognized tribes, as documented by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, each with its own rich cultural traditions, governance systems, and historical territories.

The map poster above, created by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, shows the current federally recognized tribal lands across the United States. These territories, though significantly reduced from their historical extent, remain vital centers of Native American culture and sovereignty in the 21st century.

Understanding Native American Population Patterns

Using ArcGIS and the latest Census Bureau data, I created two animated maps that reveal the distribution patterns of Native American communities across the United States.

The first animated map reveals the varying concentrations of Native American populations across U.S. counties, ranging from 1% to 90%. Each frame highlights counties reaching specific threshold percentages, while also showing Native American reservations. This layered approach helps us understand where Native communities maintain their strongest presence today.

Key Population Centers

According to Census Bureau demographic analysis, several regions stand out for their significant Native American populations:

Alaska: Home to 229 federally recognized tribes, with some remote communities having Native populations exceeding 90%

The Southwest: The Navajo Nation spans Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, representing the largest tribal territory in the country

The Plains: From Montana to Oklahoma, numerous communities maintain strong Native American populations

The Pacific Northwest: Tribal communities here have deep historical connections to the region’s coastal and forest resources

Historical Changes and Modern Trends

This second map visualization tracks changes in Native American population distribution from 1990 to 2022, focusing on counties where Native Americans make up 10% or more of the population. The animation reveals interesting shifts in where Native communities have grown or declined over three decades.

Urban Migration and Community Dynamics

The National Congress of American Indians reports that while traditional tribal lands remain important cultural centers, recent decades have seen significant movement of Native Americans to urban areas. Cities like Phoenix, Minneapolis, and Albuquerque now have substantial Native American populations, creating new urban Indian communities while maintaining connections to their tribal homelands.

Looking Forward: Growth and Challenges

Recent trends from the Census Bureau’s population projections suggest continued growth in the Native American population, with estimates indicating potential expansion to 11.2 million by 2060. This growth occurs alongside efforts to preserve languages, maintain cultural traditions, and address contemporary challenges:

72% of Native Americans now live in urban or suburban areas

Young Native Americans increasingly identify with multiple racial backgrounds while maintaining strong cultural connections

Tribal languages are seeing revival efforts across the country, with some communities showing successful preservation programs

The Asian American community stands as one of the most dynamic demographic groups in the United States. Making up 7.2% of the total U.S. population – over 24 million people as of 2022 – Asian Americans have more than doubled their presence in the country since 2000. This remarkable growth has reshaped communities nationwide, creating new cultural and economic centers that have transformed the American landscape.

Using ArcGIS and comprehensive data from the U.S. Census Bureau, including both the decennial census and American Community Survey, I created two animated maps to visualize these demographic patterns. These visualizations combine historical records with current estimates to show how Asian American populations have grown and shifted across U.S. counties over time.

<iframe loading="lazy" title="Where Do Asian Americans Live?

This animated map reveals the current distribution of Asian Americans across U.S. counties, showing areas where they comprise from 1% to over 45% of the local population. Each frame highlights counties that meet different population thresholds, providing a clear picture of where Asian American communities are most concentrated.

Regional Patterns and Major Centers

The geographic distribution of Asian Americans shows distinct patterns, with particularly strong presence in coastal regions and major metropolitan areas. The highest concentrations are found in:

The San Francisco Bay Area, where several counties report over 30% Asian American population

Parts of the New York metropolitan area, particularly Queens and Nassau County

Los Angeles and Orange Counties in Southern California

The Seattle-Tacoma region in Washington

Honolulu County, Hawaii, where Asian Americans make up nearly half the population

This second visualization tracks the growth of Asian American populations from 1990 to 2022, focusing on counties where Asian Americans make up 5% or more of the population. The progression reveals how Asian American communities have expanded across different regions over three decades.

A Story of Growth and Change

The Asian American population growth story goes beyond just numbers. Between 2000 and 2019, this community grew by 81% – the fastest rate among all racial and ethnic groups in the United States. According to U.S. Census Bureau projections, the Asian American population is expected to reach 46 million by 2060, nearly doubling its current size.

What makes this growth particularly interesting is its uneven distribution across the country. While traditional gateway cities like San Francisco and New York continue to attract new Asian immigrants and retain established communities, we’re seeing significant growth in unexpected places. Cities like Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Raleigh, North Carolina, have emerged as new destinations, often driven by educational and professional opportunities.

Economic and Educational Impact

The influence of Asian American communities on local economies is substantial. In Silicon Valley, for instance, Asian Americans make up nearly one-third of the technology workforce. This concentration of talent has helped shape the region into a global innovation hub. Similar patterns are visible in other sectors, from healthcare in Houston to finance in New York City.

Beyond the Coasts

While coastal regions show the highest concentrations, the maps reveal an interesting trend of inland growth. Cities like Austin, Texas, and Phoenix, Arizona, have seen their Asian American populations more than double since 2000. These new population centers often form around universities, research facilities, and growing technology sectors.

Immigration patterns tell only part of the story. Natural population growth and internal migration are increasingly important factors. Second and third-generation Asian Americans often move to different regions than their parents, contributing to a more dispersed population pattern across the country.

Looking Ahead

Demographic projections suggest that Asian Americans will become the largest immigrant group in the United States by 2055. This shift will likely continue to reshape communities across the country, creating new cultural centers and economic opportunities in unexpected places.

These changes will continue to transform the American landscape, making it essential to understand and document these demographic shifts through detailed geographic analysis and visualization.

The Changing Face of America: Hispanic and Latino Population Growth

Hispanic and Latino Americans represent a diverse group, encompassing people with heritage from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. This ethnic group has become an integral part of the American fabric, contributing to the nation’s culture, economy, and society in countless ways.

As of 2022, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that there were approximately 63.7 million Hispanic and Latino Americans, accounting for about 19.1% of the total U.S. population. This marks a significant increase from just 50.5 million (16.3%) in 2010, highlighting the rapid growth of this demographic group.

The American demographic landscape is changing rapidly, and one of the most striking trends is the expansion and growing influence of the Hispanic and Latino population. Our new maps, created using ArcGIS and the latest U.S. Census data, tell a compelling story of this demographic shift.

This animated map shows the distribution of Hispanic and Latino populations across U.S. counties, with thresholds ranging from 1% to over 95%. As the animation progresses, we see not only the areas with historically significant Hispanic presence but also emerging regions where these communities are putting down new roots.

Key Observations:

Southwestern Stronghold: States like California, Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico consistently show high concentrations of Hispanic and Latino residents, reflecting historical settlement patterns and proximity to Latin America.

Emerging Hubs: We see growing Hispanic populations in unexpected areas, such as parts of the Midwest and Southeast, indicating new migration patterns and changing economic opportunities.

Urban Centers: Major metropolitan areas across the country show significant Hispanic and Latino presence, highlighting the role of cities as cultural melting pots.

The Long View: Hispanic Majority Counties (1990-2022)

Our second map takes a longer historical perspective, tracking counties where Hispanics and Latinos comprise over 50% of the population from 1990 to 2022. This time-lapse visualization offers several intriguing insights:

Steady Expansion: The number of Hispanic-majority counties has grown consistently over the past three decades, particularly in the Southwest and along the U.S.-Mexico border.

New Frontiers: We see the emergence of Hispanic-majority counties in unexpected regions, suggesting a broadening geographic distribution of the Hispanic population.

Urban to Rural Shift: While major cities have long been centers of Hispanic culture, we observe a trend of increasing Hispanic populations in more rural counties, particularly in agricultural areas.

Looking to the Future: Projections and Implications

The growth of the Hispanic and Latino population in the U.S. shows no signs of slowing. According to the Pew Research Center, Hispanics are projected to reach 29% of the U.S. population by 2050, up from 19% in 2020. This growth is driven by both immigration and higher birth rates among Hispanic Americans compared to other demographic groups.

Several factors will shape the future distribution and impact of the Hispanic population:

Economic Opportunities: As industries evolve and relocate, Hispanic workers may follow, potentially creating new population centers.

Education: Increasing college attendance rates among Hispanic youth may influence professional opportunities and geographic mobility [2].

Political Engagement: Growing Hispanic populations in various regions may reshape local and national political landscapes.

Cultural Integration: As Hispanic communities become more established across the country, we may see increased cultural exchange and blending with other American traditions.

The Broader Context: Diversity in the United States

While our maps focus on Hispanic and Latino populations, it’s crucial to view this trend within the broader context of American diversity. The United States continues to become more multicultural, with various ethnic groups contributing to the nation’s rich cultural mosaic.

As we look at these maps, it’s important to remember that they represent more than just statistics. Each data point reflects communities, families, and individuals who are integral to the American story. The changing demographics highlighted in our visualizations underscore the dynamic and evolving nature of American society.

The United States is home to a diverse mix of communities, each adding to the country’s cultural richness. In this post, we’re exploring how African American populations are spread across U.S. counties and how this has changed over time, using a series of animated maps.

We’ve created three different animated maps using U.S. Census Bureau data and ArcGIS software. These maps don’t just show current population spreads – they also track changes over the years, giving us a full picture of African American communities across the country.

Our first map gives a wide-angle view of the density of African American populations in U.S. counties. It moves through different levels, from counties with just 1% African American population up to those with 80% or more. This helps us spot areas with large African American communities and shows how unevenly populations can be spread across the nation.

The second map zeros in on counties where African Americans make up 10% or more of the population. It covers the years from 1990 to 2022, showing how these areas have changed over three decades. It’s interesting to see how African American communities have grown or shrunk in different regions, reflecting bigger trends in the economy and where people are moving.

Our last map focuses on counties where African Americans are the majority – making up 50% or more of the population. This animation also runs from 1990 to 2022, highlighting areas with the highest concentration of African American residents and how these have shifted over time.

These maps aren’t just nice to look at – they’re useful tools for understanding population trends, helping make policy decisions, and seeing how America’s racial makeup is always changing. By turning census numbers into pictures, we can better grasp the complex ways people are spread out across the country.

It’s worth noting that while these maps show big trends, they might miss some of the finer details of local communities. Things like city growth, job opportunities, and local history all play big roles in shaping these population patterns.

As we keep learning about the mix of people in our country, tools like these animated maps are really helpful. They teach us about our past and present and help us think about and plan for a future that includes and celebrates all of America’s diversity.

If you’re interested in exploring U.S. geography more, here are some detailed maps you can find on Amazon:
