Travel time from Paris

According to James Maxwell Anderson, by the late eighteenth century, the region of the Ile de France had the best-constructed roads in Europe, much admired by foreigners. But, when traveling by horse-drawn vehicles over vast distances, travelers found that the roads sometimes became just bumpy tracks and that the trip was slow and tiresome. Going to Bordeaux or Strasbourg from Paris took six days; traveling to Toulouse took seven or eight-day and to Marseille, nine days.

The trip from Paris to Calais by fourgon also took six days; by diligence, the travel time was two and a half days.

Here is another map from 1898 showing the decrease of travel times for five dates than the 17th century. For each of these dates, the 17 cities are depicted at a distance reduced proportionally to reducing travel time. So the outlines aren’t isochronic lines but explain how close the outline of France would appear to 17th century Parisians if they could travel at speeds of those future dates.

Nowadays, everything has changed. Now you can drive through all of France in one day.

San Francisco: An isochronous map for public transportation

Given a starting point it shows what you can reach within a certain time limit using public transportation (so subway, trains, bus, but no car)

Since commute times with public transportation vary greatly depending on the time of day, traffic, luck for catching the bus, we made a few asumptions:

• The frequency of each line of subway, bus, is computed as an average over the commute hours of 7am to 9am

• You’ll wait an average amount each time you catch a bus or a train (so if a line has a service every 10 minutes, commutometerwill make you wait 5min to take it).

This rule is likely to change soon, since typically people time their commute a little better and don’t leave their house at a random time.

• You’ll walk a leisurly pace of 1.2 meters per second. This is a little below the ‘preferred walking speed’ according to Wikipedia.

• Only the transportation agency sharing publicly their data in GTFS are represented here. If you think a local agency is missing and they are sharing their data, please contact us on our twitter account.

Species movements due to climate change

“Historically, many species moved great distances as climates changed. However, modern movements will be limited by the patterns of human-dominated landscapes. Here, we use a combination of projected climate-driven shifts in the distributions of 2903 vertebrate species, estimated current human impacts on the landscape, and movement models, to determine through which areas in the western hemisphere species will likely need to move to track suitable climates. Our results reveal areas with projected high densities of climate-driven movements including, the Amazon Basin, the southeastern United States and southeastern Brazil. Some of these regions, such as southern Bolivia and northern Paraguay, contain relatively intact landscapes, whereas others such as the southeastern United States and Brazil are heavily impacted by human activities. Thus, these results highlight both critical areas for protecting lands that will foster movement, and barriers where human land-use activities will likely impede climate-driven shifts in species distributions.”
