In demographics, the center of population is a geographical spot representing a center point of the region’s population.

Center of world population

On average, the point nearest to everyone on our planet is in the north of South Asia, with a mean distance of 5 thousand kilometers or 3 thousand miles. Its antipodal point is contrarily the most distant point from everyone globally is located in the South Pacific, not so far from Easter Island, with a mean distance of 15 thousand kilometers or 9.3 thousand miles.

Centre of the population for every nation in the world

The map below shows the center of population for each nation globally, the same number of people east and west and north and south of the point. The map was created using gridded population data of the Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center.

@nailrkaye

Center of the population of the United States

The center of the U.S. population is located in Wright county. The map below shows changes to the mean center of population for the United States from 1990 to 2020.

But the population center of each country is not constant. For example, in the United States аfter moving 966 kilometers (600 miles) west by south throughout the 19th century, the change in the population’s mean center during the 20th century was less noticeable, moving 521 kilometers 324 miles west and 163 kilometers (101 miles) south. Almost 79 percent of the overall southerly shift occurred between 1950 and 2000.

The map below shows the shifting of the mean center of the United States population from 1790 to 2010.

Finland, a Nordic country in northern Europe, exhibits a unique population distribution pattern characterized by urban concentration, regional disparities, and a preference for coastal and southern areas. With a relatively small population of around 5.6 million people, Finland’s land area is sparsely populated, creating distinct population dynamics.

The map below shows population of Feinland per 1km2 grid square.

@hezec

The southern coastal region, particularly around the capital city, Helsinki, is the most densely populated area in Finland. Helsinki, along with its neighboring cities like Espoo, Vantaa, and Turku, serves as the economic, cultural, and political hub of the country. The southern regions benefit from milder winters, better economic opportunities, and a more favorable climate, which attracts a significant portion of the population.

In contrast, northern and eastern Finland, including the vast Lapland region, are sparsely populated. The harsh climate, with long and severe winters, makes these areas less attractive for settlement. Lapland, despite its stunning natural beauty, including the Northern Lights and pristine wilderness, has a notably low population density.

If everyone in Finland lived as densely as in Helsinki, the whole population would fit in the highlighted area on the map below, created by @NaytaData. The highlighted area has a total area of 1836 square km.

Many individuals from rural areas, particularly in the north and east, continue to migrate to larger cities in search of better employment prospects and improved living standards. The map below shows the population distribution shift in Finland between 1987 and 2017.

Finland’s population is expected to continue aging, with a growing proportion of elderly citizens. Urban areas, particularly in the south, will probably experience population growth, while rural regions may face decline. Immigration will play a role in shaping population dynamics, and government policies aimed at encouraging family growth and addressing regional disparities will influence future changes. Factors like technology, climate change, and global events will also impact population distribution, making it essential for Finland to adapt and plan for these shifts.

The global population is more than three times larger than it was in the mid-twentieth century. The world’s human population surpassed 8 billion in mid-November 2022 from an assessed 2.5 billion people in 1950, adding 1 billion people since 2010 and 2 billion since 1998. The global population is predicted to increase by nearly 2 billion persons in the next 30 years, from the present 8 billion to 9.7 billion in 2050 and could culminate at about 10.4 billion in the mid-2080s.

More than half of all people live in just seven countries.

China and India have the world’s largest population. The following five most populous nations – the United States, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria and Brazil – jointly have fewer people than India or China. But every country in the world also has an uneven distribution of population.

On the map below created by Reddit user neilrkaye for each country globally, the red area shows where 95% of them live; the percentage is how much land this represents for each country.

R

The map was created using country data and population data (1, 2).

White non-Hispanic Americans have historically been the largest racial and ethnic group in the United States.

As of the most recent data from 2022, there are approximately 197 million White non-Hispanic Americans, making up about 59.3% of the total U.S. population. While this group still represents a majority, their proportion of the population has been gradually decreasing over the past few decades.

Spatial Patterns in the Distribution of White Non-Hispanic Americans

White non-Hispanic Americans are widely distributed across the United States, but there are notable regional patterns. They are most heavily concentrated in the Midwest and parts of the Northeast. The Western and Southern states also have significant populations, though these regions are more diverse.

Changes Over Time: Animated Map of White Non-Hispanic Population by County (1990-2022)

Over the decades, the number and percentage of White non-Hispanic Americans have undergone significant changes. To illustrate these trends, I have created an animated map showing the U.S. White Non-Hispanic Population by County from 1990 to 2022.

Future Demographic Predictions

According to demographic projections, White non-Hispanic Americans are expected to cease being the majority in the U.S. by around 2045. By this time, no single ethnic group will hold a majority, leading to a more pluralistic society. Hispanic Americans are projected to become the largest ethnic group, surpassing White non-Hispanic Americans, around the year 2060, with significant growth driven by higher birth rates and immigration.

Have you ever wondered how the population of your county has changed over the last few decades? Our fascinating United States map reveals the dramatic shifts in population across the country from 1990 to 2022. This eye-opening visualization brings to life the dynamic nature of America’s demographics, showcasing which areas have boomed and which have faced challenges.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://vividmaps.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/population-change-by-american-county-1024x768.jpg" alt="A color-coded map of the United States displaying county-level population changes from 1990 to 2022.
The animated version of the map is here.

This United States map, which I created using official data from the United States Census Bureau, provides a county-by-county look at population changes over 32 years. The color-coded visualization offers an immediate and impactful understanding of demographic shifts across the nation.

Highlights from Our United States Map

The Sun Belt Surge: Our map clearly shows the explosive growth in the Sun Belt region. Counties in states like Arizona, Florida, and Texas are painted in deep reds, indicating significant population increases.

Rural Retreat: In stark contrast, many rural counties across the Great Plains and Midwest are shaded in blues, representing population declines. Some counties in North Dakota and Kansas have lost about 30% of their residents since 1990.

Coastal Contrasts: The coasts tell a tale of two trends. While many coastal counties in the Southeast have grown rapidly, parts of the Northeast and upper Midwest have seen more modest changes or even slight declines.

Mountain West Momentum: The Rocky Mountain states are another hotspot of growth. Counties around Denver, Salt Lake City, and Boise have seen their populations swell as people flock to these outdoor-oriented urban centers.

Texas-Sized Growth: Everything’s bigger in Texas, including population growth! The triangle formed by Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Austin-San Antonio has experienced phenomenal expansion, with some counties more than doubling in size.

What’s Driving These Changes?

Several factors contribute to the patterns we see on our United States map:

Economic opportunities: Job markets in tech hubs and growing metropolitan areas attract new residents.

Climate preferences: Many retirees and young professionals alike are drawn to warmer climates.

Urban vs. rural divide: Cities and suburbs continue to grow while many rural areas face challenges retaining residents.

Immigration: Some regions benefit more from international migration than others.

Natural amenities: Areas with attractive outdoor recreation options have seen significant in-migration.

Why This United States Map Matters

Understanding population trends is crucial for:

Policymakers allocating resources and planning infrastructure

Businesses making decisions about where to expand or invest

Individuals considering relocation for work or retirement

Our United States map provides a clear, visual representation of these important demographic shifts, making it an invaluable tool for anyone interested in the changing face of America.

Have you ever wondered what a world map would look like if countries were sized based on their population instead of land area? Well, wonder no more! I recently came across a fascinating cartogram created by Max Roser that does just that, and it’s completely changed my perspective on global demographics.

This isn’t your typical world map. Each tiny square represents 500,000 people, with a total of 12,266 squares depicting our planet’s 7.633 billion inhabitants. It’s mind-blowing to see how this unique visualization reshapes familiar continents and countries.

What immediately stands out is how some nations, like India and China, dramatically expand, while others, such as Russia and Canada, shrink significantly. It’s a stark reminder of just how unevenly distributed our global population is.

But here’s something even more intriguing – if we could somehow gather every person on Earth in one place, standing shoulder to shoulder, how much space would we actually occupy?

If everyone on the world stood this close together they would take up this much space

Surprisingly, we’d all fit within a circle just 50 km in diameter! It’s hard to believe, isn’t it? This puts into perspective how small we are compared to the vast expanse of our planet, yet how significant our impact is on it.

This population-based world map not only offers a fresh take on global demographics but also serves as a powerful tool for understanding international relations, resource distribution, and environmental challenges. It’s a reminder that traditional world maps, while familiar, don’t always tell the whole story.

The story of Finland’s population distribution over three decades reveals a fascinating transformation that mirrors global urbanization trends. These striking maps, created by @NaytaData, divide Finland into four zones, each containing exactly 25% of the country’s population, showing dramatic changes between 1987 and 2017.

The Helsinki Effect

The most obvious change is the shrinking dark blue zone around Helsinki. In 1987, Helsinki and its surrounding area housed about 723,000 people (15% of Finland’s 4.93 million population). By 2017, this number had grown to approximately 1.2 million (28% of the total 5.51 million Finns).

This concentration reflects Helsinki’s emergence as Finland’s primary economic and cultural hub. The capital region has become a magnet for young professionals, students, and immigrants, offering diverse job opportunities in technology, business, and creative industries.

Beyond the Capital: A Changing National Landscape

The maps reveal a fascinating pattern of population redistribution across Finland. The northern yellow zone has notably contracted while still containing its 25% share of the population – a clear sign of increasing density in northern urban centers like Oulu.

Perhaps even more telling is the transformation of the green-colored central zone. Its significant size reduction suggests a substantial population shift, likely due to younger generations moving to urban areas for education and employment opportunities. Statistics Finland reports that smaller towns and rural communities in this region have experienced steady population decline since the 1990s.

The orange zone, which once spread inland from the southern coast, has now concentrated primarily along the coastline. This coastal consolidation highlights the growing importance of Finland’s southern urban centers and their connection to international trade routes across the Baltic Sea.

The Forces Behind the Shift

Several key factors have driven these changes:

Education Hubs: Universities in cities like Tampere, Turku, and Oulu have attracted young people from rural areas

Economic Evolution: Traditional industries have modernized, requiring fewer workers in rural regions

Quality of Life: Urban areas offer more diverse cultural and social opportunities

Infrastructure Development: Better transportation and services in urban centers have created a self-reinforcing cycle of growth

The Rural-Urban Balance

This redistribution hasn’t come without challenges. Rural municipalities face increasing pressure to maintain essential services with declining populations and tax bases. However, some communities have found innovative solutions. For example, the town of Ii in northern Finland has become known for its creative approach to sustainable development, attracting new residents despite the broader urbanization trend.

Looking Forward

Finland’s demographic landscape continues to evolve. While urbanization persists, new factors like remote work technology and sustainable living trends might influence future patterns. Some smaller cities have already begun developing specialized economic niches to attract residents and businesses, suggesting that Finland’s population distribution might become more nuanced than a simple rural-to-urban shift.

In 1910, Manhattan crammed 2.3 million residents into 22 square miles—a density the borough has never matched since. By 2025, the overnight population sits around 1.7 million. But Manhattan's real story isn't about who lives here anymore. Every weekday, the island swells to nearly 4 million people by early afternoon, then empties out again each night. Midtown hits densities comparable to Mumbai and Macau at peak hours, while neighborhoods north of Central Park lose residents during work hours. Maybe the question isn't how many people live in Manhattan—it's how many people Manhattan holds at any given moment.

Manhattan has always been unique in New York City. Take a map of the five boroughs and Manhattan is the smallest one—yet somehow it holds more people per square mile than any other part of the city. In 2025, about 1.7 million people live here, packed into 22 square miles (57 square kilometers). That’s something like 77,000 people per square mile, or around 30,000 per square kilometer. No other county in America comes close. But you want to see real density? Look at Manhattan in 1910. Ships were unloading immigrants from Europe every week. Most jobs were downtown or in Midtown. If you didn’t live within walking distance, you weren’t getting to work. So the island absorbed around 2.3 million people—about 101,000 per square mile, or 39,000 per square kilometer.

So what changed? The city spread out. The Brooklyn Bridge changed things. Then came the subway expansions into the Bronx and Queens. Suddenly a worker making $15 a week didn’t have to pay half of it for a windowless room in the Bowery. Astoria was an option. So was Flatbush. You could get to work in 45 minutes instead of living on top of it. Families who’d been stuffed into one-bedroom tenements—three kids, two adults, maybe a boarder—started leaving for places with actual space. A second bedroom. A patch of grass. Windows that looked out at something besides a brick wall three feet away. Manhattan kept building upward—the Woolworth Building, the Chrysler, the Empire State—but not homes. Those were offices.

Homes that had once held entire families were later converted into larger single units. The result was fewer residents overall, even though the skyline was rising higher than ever.

By 2010, the resident population had dropped to about 1.59 million, far below the 1910 peak. Yet in the past two decades, Manhattan has started to grow again. According to recent city estimates, its population in 2025 is close to 1.7 million. The numbers are creeping back up, slowly but steadily, even with rents that make your eyes water.

The shifts look like this:

Year

Population

Density per km²

Density per mi²

1910

~2,300,000

~39,208

~101,500

2010

1,585,873

~26,830

~69,500

2025

~1,694,251

~28,670

~74,250

This table shows how Manhattan has never gone back to the density of its early 20th-century peak, even though it remains the densest part of the United States.

But what makes Manhattan even more interesting today is that its population doesn’t just change across decades—it also shifts dramatically within a single day. Thanks to a project called manpopex.us, you can actually see these changes block by block and hour by hour. The estimates combine census data with subway entry and exit counts, balanced against studies from NYU Wagner.

According to that research, Manhattan holds about two million people overnight. Around lunchtime on a typical weekday, you’re looking at nearly double that—close to four million. The peak usually hits on Wednesday afternoons around 2 p.m.—Midtown gets so jammed you can barely move on the sidewalks, and good luck finding a table at any restaurant. Then flip to late Sunday night and the contrast is wild. The streets empty out, the subways run nearly vacant, and everything feels strangely still before the whole cycle starts over Monday morning.

The change isn’t spread evenly. Go north of Central Park and you’ll find neighborhoods that actually empty out during the day—people heading off to jobs elsewhere in the city. Head downtown and it’s a completely different story. Midtown and the Financial District pack in so many workers and visitors that the density rivals what you’d see in the most crowded parts of Mumbai or Macau. Weekends are their own thing. You get fewer commuters, sure, but nightlife and tourism keep the population up later than you’d expect—definitely later than on weeknights.

That 1910 number—2.3 million residents—probably isn’t coming back. Ever try standing in Times Square on a Wednesday afternoon, though? You’d swear Manhattan was the most packed place on the planet. Here’s the thing: the island doesn’t grow the way it used to, slowly adding people decade after decade. Now it’s all about the daily cycle—people flood in each morning, then pour back out at night. That rhythm tells you more about Manhattan than any census ever could.

Population changes across U.S. metropolitan areas reveal intriguing trends, with some regions booming while others face stagnation. This map below, created by Reddit user IristormDesign using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, highlights the 25 fastest-growing and 25 slowest-growing metropolitan areas since 2010.

The Fastest-Growing Metropolitan Areas

The top 25 fastest-growing metropolitan areas are concentrated in the South and the West. Cities in Texas, Florida, and the Carolinas dominate the list, reflecting booming economies, warmer climates, and lower living costs than other regions. Leading the pack is Austin–Round Rock, Texas, with a growth rate of +23.28%, fueled by its thriving tech scene and vibrant culture.

Florida claims multiple spots with cities like Cape Coral–Fort Myers (+19.47%) and Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford (+17.59%), driven by tourism and an influx of retirees. Other notable mentions include Provo–Orem, Utah (+17.25%), showcasing the state’s burgeoning tech industry, and Denver–Aurora–Lakewood, Colorado (+13.55%), renowned for its outdoor lifestyle and strong job market.

The Slowest-Growing Metropolitan Areas

The slowest-growing metropolitan areas tell a different story. Many of these regions are in the Midwest and Northeast, historically known as manufacturing strongholds. Cities like Flint, Michigan (–4.32%), and Youngstown–Warren–Boardman, Ohio (–4.21%), are grappling with economic challenges tied to industrial decline.

While some areas experienced slight growth, such as Buffalo–Cheektowaga–Niagara Falls, New York (+0.12%), others, like Scranton–Wilkes-Barre–Hazleton, Pennsylvania (–1.46%), saw declines due to aging populations and outmigration.

South Asia is home to over 2 billion people—more than the combined populations of the U.S., Brazil, Indonesia, Russia, Japan, Mexico, and the EU. What caused this population boom, and what does the future hold?

If South Asia were a single country, it would still be one of the most populous in the world, surpassing every other nation. With over 2 billion people, this region holds about one-fourth of the global population. To put that into perspective, South Asia (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka) has more people than the United States, Brazil, Indonesia, Russia, Japan, Mexico, and the entire European Union combined. That’s an astonishing concentration of human life in a relatively small land area.

Why Did South Asia’s Population Explode?

The region’s demographic boom wasn’t an accident—it was driven by a combination of historical, medical, and social factors:

Medical Advances & Lower Mortality – The 20th century brought major improvements in healthcare, vaccines, and sanitation, significantly reducing infant mortality rates.

Colonial and Post-Colonial Growth – During British rule, South Asia saw better transportation and food distribution, which supported a rising population despite economic struggles.

High Fertility Rates – Even as other parts of the world saw declining birth rates, South Asia maintained high fertility rates well into the late 20th century. Cultural norms favoring large families played a role, especially in rural areas.

Green Revolution & Food Security – Advances in agriculture from the 1960s onward helped prevent major famines, allowing populations to continue growing.

Current Population Trends in South Asia

While the region is still growing, the pace is slowing. Here’s a breakdown:

India’s fertility rate has dropped from 5.7 children per woman in 1950 to about 1.9 today.

Bangladesh’s birth rate has also declined, thanks to widespread family planning programs.

Pakistan still has one of the highest birth rates in the region, which could keep its population growing faster than its neighbors for the next few decades.

Urbanization, economic shifts, and improved education—particularly for women—are key reasons why South Asian birth rates are dropping.

What’s Next? South Asia’s Population Forecast

Population Growth Continues, But Slows–The World Bank projects South Asia’s population to peak at around 2.3 billion by 2050, before stabilizing and possibly declining.

Aging Populations in Some Areas – While South Asia is known for its youthful demographics, countries like Sri Lanka and parts of India are already seeing aging populations, which could reshape economies and social policies.

The strain on Resources – South Asia’s massive population means continued challenges in infrastructure, food security, and climate resilience.

Final Thoughts: What Does This Mean for the World?

South Asia’s demographic story is one of rapid transformation. Once characterized by unchecked growth, the region is now entering a new phase where declining birth rates and urbanization will reshape its future. However, with over 2 billion people still living here, what happens in South Asia will have global economic, political, and environmental consequences.
