Hawaii sits farther from other landmasses than almost any island group on Earth — volcanic peaks that Polynesians found by sailing outrigger canoes across thousands of kilometers of open ocean centuries ago. Most maps squeeze the archipelago into a tidy rectangle, but the actual layout sprawls much wider. Tally up every minor rock and individual islet and you get about 137 named islands, islets and atolls. The combined land area comes to roughly 16,635 km² (6,423 mi²), or about 28,314 km² (10,932 mi²) when you include inland waters.

The chain formed as the Pacific Plate crept northwest over a hotspot locked in place deep in the mantle. Magma pushed up and piled into volcanoes. The Big Island erupts regularly and adds new coastline in the southeast. Old volcanic stumps sit hundreds of kilometers northwest, worn down by wind and waves over millions of years. Each island marks where the plate was when magma broke through.

Polynesian navigators crossed thousands of kilometers of open water to settle these islands sometime in the early first millennium CE. They developed an island culture that unified into a kingdom. The US annexed Hawaii in 1898. On August 21, 1959, it joined as the 50th state. The 2020 census counted 1,455,271 residents, most of them on Oʻahu.

Kure Atoll to the Big Island spans about 2,450 km (1,520 mi) — roughly the distance you’d cover driving from New York to Denver. Tiny atolls and bare rock pinnacles are sprinkled across the northwestern section. Nobody lives on most of them. Some are just pinnacles sticking out of the water. But they anchor Hawaii’s maritime boundaries and extend the state far beyond the main islands.

Trade winds blowing across thousands of kilometers of ocean keep coastal areas at 23–29 °C (73–84 °F) throughout the year. Rain is different. Windward slopes catch clouds coming off the Pacific and stay wet. Drive to the leeward side and you hit a rain shadow — dry, sunny, sometimes sparse vegetation. You can cross from rainforest to near-desert in half an hour on some islands.

The table below shows named features across the archipelago.

Few people realize just how vast Hudson Bay really is. It’s so large that it could easily accommodate the entire island of Great Britain, with plenty of space left over.

Hudson Bay covers an area of 1.23 million square kilometers (474,000 square miles)—making it one of the largest inland seas in the world. In contrast, Great Britain—the largest of the British Isles—spans only 229,848 square kilometers (88,745 square miles). That means Hudson Bay is more than five times larger.

Take a look at the map below created by Reddit user PoneyEnShort to see just how the two compare side by side.

The bay is also longer and wider. It stretches 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) from north to south and over 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from east to west. Great Britain, by comparison, is 965 kilometers (600 miles) long and under 500 kilometers (300 miles) wide at its broadest.

Feature

Great Britain

Hudson Bay

Area

229,848 km² (88,745 mi²)

1,230,000 km² (474,000 mi²)

Length

~965 km (600 mi)

~1,500 km (930 mi)

Width

~500 km (300 mi)

~1,050 km (650 mi)

Average Elevation / Depth

162 m (531 ft)

100 m (330 ft)

Highest Point / Max Depth

Ben Nevis: 1,345 m (4,413 ft)

270 m (900 ft)

Lowest Point

The Fens: -4 m (-13 ft) below sea level

—

The maximum depth in Hudson Bay is 270 meters (900 feet), with an average depth of about 100 meters (330 feet). Although it may appear shallow in comparison to deep lakes or ocean trenches, Hudson Bay is unique because it is a drowned glacial basin formed when retreating ice sheets left behind an enormous depression that eventually filled with seawater.

The bay’s waters remain cold year-round and are ice-covered for much of the winter, flanked by boreal wilderness and sparsely populated coastlines.

Great Britain, by comparison, is a landmass of rolling hills and moderate elevations. Its average elevation is about 162 meters (531 feet). Ben Nevis, the highest point, rises to 1,345 meters (4,413 feet), while the eastern English Fens, the lowest point, is -4 meters (-13 feet) below sea level. It’s interesting to note that Ben Nevis is five times higher than Hudson Bay’s deepest point, highlighting the bay’s enormous area but shallow depth.

One reason this map resonates is that we often associate importance with size. Great Britain’s cultural, political, and historical impact has shaped global events for centuries, yet it looks tiny inside the outline of Hudson Bay. Hudson Bay, by contrast, is remote, icy, and sparsely inhabited. Its harsh climate and lack of major population centers, coupled with a relatively limited cultural, informational, and historical influence on the world stage, have all contributed to a distorted—or at least underestimated—perception of its true size.

French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity of the French Republic and the only overseas country of France. Its total land area is 4,167 square kilometers (1,609 sq miles).

The map below illustrates the size of the French Polynesian archipelagos compared to Europe.

French Polynesia is subdivided into 5 groups of islands or archipelagos: the Society Islands archipelago, composed of the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands; the Tuamotu Archipelago; the Gambier Islands; the Marquesas Islands; and the Austral Islands.

Amongst its 118 islands and atolls, 67 are populated. Tahiti, which is located within the Society Islands, is the largest and the most populated island, having close to 69 percent of the population of French Polynesia. Papeete, located on Tahiti island, is the capital.

The largest archipelago in French Polynesia is the Tuamotu Archipelago, which is located in the eastern part of French Polynesia and consists of around 80 coral atolls and reef islands. It covers an area of approximately 850,000 square kilometers (328,187 sq mi) and has a population of around 16,000 people. The capital of the Tuamotus is the city of Fakarava, which is known for its beautiful beaches, diving spots, and lagoon.

A lake is an area filled with water, localized in a basin, that is surrounded by land, apart from any river or other outlet that serves to feed or drain the lake.

There are about 1.4 million lakes on Earth with an area of 10 hectares (0.1 sq km) or more. Most of them are found in Canada, Scandinavia, and Siberia. Map below shows 1.4 million of these global lakes.

But according to satellite data, there are 117 million lakes to be found worldwide. These lakes covering almost 4% of the world’s land surface.

The Caspian Sea is the biggest lake in the world. The Caspian Sea spreads out over nearly 750 miles (1,200 km) from north to south, with an average width of 200 miles (320 km). It covers a region of around 149,200 square miles (386,400 square km) – bigger than the region of Japan.

Below is the map of the 25 largest lakes in the world by area created by slapitonamap.com.

Interestingly, in the 19th century, a map of the largest lakes looked like this. Here is Humboldt’s Atlas of the biggest lakes created in 1951.

World’s largest lakes on a uniform scale (1851)

Humboldt mistakenly thought the Black Sea was a lake. Lake Victoria is missing on the map because the first European to see Lake Victoria arrived in 1858.

Great Britain is an island located in the North Atlantic Ocean and is part of the British Isles, a group of islands in Northwestern Europe. It is the largest island in the British Isles and is divided into three countries: England, Scotland, and Wales, each with its own distinct culture and identity.

To the east of Great Britain lies the North Sea, separating it from the continent of Europe, while the Irish Sea borders its west coast, separating it from the island of Ireland. The English Channel to the south separates Great Britain from continental Europe and the northern coast of France.

Great Britain, in addition to its main component islands of England, Scotland, and Wales, is also surrounded by numerous smaller islands that dot its coastline. These smaller islands, while individually diverse and distinct in character, collectively add to the richness of Great Britain’s geography and culture.

One notable group of smaller islands is the Inner and Outer Hebrides, located off the western coast of Scotland. These islands offer stunning natural beauty, with rugged coastlines, picturesque villages, and a unique Gaelic culture. The Inner Hebrides are closer to the Scottish mainland and include famous islands like Skye, Mull, and Islay, known for their dramatic landscapes and whisky production. The Outer Hebrides are further west and have a distinct identity, with the Gaelic language still spoken in some communities.

To the north of Scotland are the Orkney and Shetland Islands, which have their own Norse-influenced culture and heritage. These islands are known for their archaeological sites, including ancient settlements and stone circles, providing insights into early human history in the region.

In the Irish Sea, the Isle of Man stands as a self-governing Crown dependency with a unique identity and its own parliament. Known for its rich maritime history and the annual TT motorcycle races, the Isle of Man has a distinct legal and cultural status.

To the southwest of England, the Isles of Scilly form an archipelago, with a mild climate and beautiful beaches. These islands are known for their unique flora and fauna, attracting naturalists and tourists alike.

Have you ever wondered how Australia and Brazil match up in size? These two southern giants are often discussed separately, but seeing them side by side reveals fascinating comparisons. Thanks to the creative work of Reddit user: luke_in_the_sky, we can visualize this comparison through an elegant superimposed map that perfectly illustrates their relative sizes.

Looking at the raw numbers, Brazil stretches across 8.5156 million km2 (3.288 million sq.mi.) of Earth’s surface, while Australia covers 7.692 million km2 (2.968 million sq.mi.). But what’s truly striking is the population difference: Brazil is home to 200 million people, while Australia’s vast landscape houses just 23.2 million residents.

This population contrast tells an intriguing story. Brazil’s population density sits at about 25 people per square kilometer, while Australia has only 3 people per square kilometer. The reason? Much of it comes down to geography and climate. Australia’s interior is dominated by harsh desert regions, covering about 35% of the continent, while Brazil’s landscape offers more habitable areas.

Both countries share some remarkable similarities: they’re both Southern Hemisphere nations with extensive coastlines and unique ecosystems. Brazil’s Amazon Rainforest blankets about 60% of the country, while Australia’s Outback defines its interior landscape.

The climate differences between these two lands are dramatic. Brazil’s Amazon region receives up to 2,300 mm of annual rainfall, while Australia’s central desert sees less than 250 mm yearly.

One fascinating parallel is how both populations cling to the coasts. In Brazil, about 80% of people live within 200 kilometers of the Atlantic Ocean, while in Australia, nearly 85% of residents make their homes within 50 kilometers of the coastline.

Imagine driving across Texas from east to west. You start your journey in Orange, near the Louisiana border, heading toward El Paso. Even pushing the speed limit at 75 mph, you’d need almost 12 hours to traverse the state – and that’s without stops for fuel, food, or rest. This incredible journey speaks to the sheer magnitude of Texas, but its size is just the beginning of its story.

From Spanish Colony to Lone Star Republic

Texas’s path to becoming the giant we know today is as fascinating as its size. While many know that six flags have flown over Texas, fewer know the full story. Spain controlled this vast territory for nearly three centuries, establishing missions and settlements across the land. When Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821, Texas became Mexican territory [Source: Texas State Historical Association – link].

However, the story was far from over. As American settlers poured into the region, tensions grew with the Mexican government. These tensions eventually erupted into the Texas Revolution. On March 2, 1836, Texas declared its independence, and following the decisive Battle of San Jacinto, the Republic of Texas was born.

This historical map shows Texas as it existed as an independent nation – a country in its own right. The Republic’s borders stretched far beyond what we know as Texas today, as you can see in this revealing overlay:

Reddit user: youmightbeinterested

For nine remarkable years, Texas stood as a sovereign nation, complete with its own president, currency, and foreign policy. When it joined the United States in 1845 as the 28th state, it brought with it not just vast territories but also a fierce independent spirit that still defines it today.

A State of Mind-Boggling Scale

To truly grasp how big Texas is, we need to think beyond numbers. Let’s start with a comparison that might surprise you:

Yes, you’re seeing that correctly – the entire nation of Poland could fit inside Texas with room to spare. But that’s just the beginning. Let’s look at how Texas measures up against Europe:

Even more remarkably, major European cities could all fit within Texas’s borders:

Imagine being able to visit the equivalents of London, Paris, Milan, and Barcelona – all without leaving state lines. That’s Texas for you.

Beyond the Open Plains

While its size is impressive, Texas is far more than just wide-open spaces. The state is divided into 254 counties, each with its own character and history:

A map of Texas counties

To put this administrative division in perspective, only Saskatchewan in Canada has more counties (296 vs. 254):

A map of Saskatchewan counties

Contrary to popular belief, less than 10% of Texas is desert. The state’s landscape tells a story of remarkable diversity. You’ll find ancient pine forests in the east that look more like Louisiana than Leone. Central Texas rolls with hill country that could have been plucked from the Mediterranean. The Gulf Coast stretches for hundreds of miles, while the Panhandle’s dramatic canyons could stand in for an Old West movie set.

An Economic Powerhouse

Texas’s physical size is matched by its economic might. If Texas were an independent nation, it would rank among the world’s largest economies:

With a GDP of approximately $2.4 trillion (as of 2023), Texas stands as an economic giant. From the tech corridors of Austin to the energy innovation hubs of Houston, from the cultural richness of San Antonio to the business prowess of Dallas, each region adds its own chapter to the Texas success story.

The Texas Experience

What strikes most visitors about Texas isn’t just its physical size – it’s how the state seems to contain entire worlds within its borders. Every region tells its own story, from the coastal plains of Galveston to the mountain ranges of Big Bend National Park.

When you think about countries, “round” probably isn’t the first description that comes to mind. Most nations have jagged borders, complicated coastlines, and irregular shapes carved by historical conflicts, geographic features, and colonial boundaries. Yet, some countries defy this norm with surprisingly circular geometries.

What Makes a Country “Round”?

Mathematicians and geographers use a fascinating metric called the “roundness coefficient” to measure how close a country’s shape is to a perfect circle. This coefficient is calculated by comparing a country’s area to the area of a perfect circle with the same perimeter.

A roundness score closer to 1 indicates a shape that’s more circular. Countries with high roundness coefficients have borders that curve smoothly, without dramatic indentations or elongated territories.

The roundness coefficient is calculated using the formula: Roundness = 4π × (Country Area) / (Perimeter)²

This mathematical approach helps researchers objectively measure a country’s geometric characteristics.

The Top 10 Roundest Countries in the World

The research reveals some truly fascinating geographical oddities:

Sierra Leone (Roundness: 0.934) – This West African nation tops the list with an impressively circular shape.

Nauru (Roundness: 0.923) – The world’s smallest island nation is also remarkably round.

Zimbabwe (Roundness: 0.915) – Southern Africa contributes another perfectly curved country.

Vatican City (Roundness: 0.908) – The world’s smallest independent state is almost a perfect circle.

Poland (Roundness: 0.903) – Central Europe’s geometrically pleasing nation.

Scarborough Reef (Roundness: 0.901) – A unique maritime territory with an almost perfect circular form.

Ivory Coast (Roundness: 0.899) – Another West African country with smooth borders.

Suriname (Roundness: 0.897) – South America’s contribution to circular nations.

Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) (Roundness: 0.896) – Another Southern African geometrically intriguing country.

Uruguay (Roundness: 0.894) – South America’s roundest nation.

Interesting Geographical Trivia

While roundness might seem like a mere mathematical curiosity, it reveals intriguing historical and geological stories. Countries like Sierra Leone and Nauru have shapes largely determined by colonial boundaries and natural geographic features.

Interestingly, a country’s “roundness” doesn’t correlate with its size, political power, or economic strength. It’s simply a quirky geographic characteristic that highlights the diverse ways national borders can form.

Why Does Country Shape Even Matter?

You might think this is just weird trivia, but country shapes tell incredible stories. They reveal:

Historical colonial boundaries

Natural geographic barriers

Diplomatic negotiations

Geological formations

The U.S. political borders can be classified into international and internal. An international boundary delineates the space between sovereign nations. Internal boundaries are more bureaucratic and used to break up space into manageable parts of administration.

International border states of the US

The U.S. shares international land borders with Canada and Mexico and sea borders with Bahamas and Cuba.

Below is the map showing the nearest country border to everywhere in the United States.

Reddit user: e8odie

The United States – Canada border is the longest international border in the world between two countries. The terrestrial boundary (including portions of maritime boundaries in the Great Lakes and on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic coasts) is 8,891 kilometers (5,525 mi) long, of which 2,475 kilometers (1,538 mi) is Canada’s border with Alaska.

The total length of the United States – Mexico border is 3,145 kilometers (1,954 miles).

The US-Mexican Border Overlaid on Europe

US internal borders

The United States is a country of 50 states, each with its own unique boundaries and history.

Reddit User Peter Gorman chopped up 50 U.S. states and turned them into Tetris-esque blocks to make it easier to understand how states neighbor one another.

Alaska and Hawaii naturally turn out to be a solitary yellow block, U.S. states towards the shoreline, like California, Florida, Maine, South Carolina, and Washington, have two or fewer neighboring states, while those at the opposing end of the spectrum, like Missouri and Tennessee, have 8t neighbors each, in almost every direction.

Modern state boundaries

Within the U.S., there are fifty states, each of which has its borders. Many people wonder why the boundaries between some states are drawn with geometric rigor.

Generally, 6 of the most significant influences managed the states’ shapes: natural geographic barriers; the American Revolution, longitude and latitude lines; the construction of railroads and Erie Canal, and the political disagreements over the problem of slavery.

If simplified, there are two types of internal U.S. borders: natural (rivers, mountains) and man-defined.

When the boundary is natural, such as a big river, it is a pretty clear separation of a landmass. Like rivers, mountains serve as barriers dividing peoples and their political and economic interests.

But in the United States, relief and rivers and political interests, religion, and languages have not strongly influenced the creation of borders as in Europe.

Below is a map of the United States if all borders between states were drawn along rivers or mountains like in Europe.

Europeanised America: US States with natural geographic borders

Reddit user: Voltion99

When we make the boundaries ourselves, the easiest line to draw is a straight one.

The first European understanding of North America was undifferentiated, endless space, which allowed for the imposition of coolly human-centered boundaries drawn with a geometric rigor. People who drew them wanted to get it done quickly. It is clearly seen if we take the borders of the western states, which came into being long after the eastern.

Typically, very straight U.S. boundaries mean that it’s in the middle of nowhere, or it was when drawn. No one worried enough to argue about it, and so an easy straight line was made. Congress just used longitude and latitude lines to create western states.

An ideal map of the United States could look like this.

Map of the U.S. if all state borders were straight lines

In UK census terms, an urban area refers to any contiguous stretch of “irreversibly urban” land. By ONS definition, a built-up area must be at least 20 hectares (200,000 m²) in size, and any smaller gaps under 200 m are bridged and treated as part of the same built-up zone. In practice this means towns or cities that nearly touch each other form one larger urban area. For example, settlements like London and Reading will count as a single built-up area only if the green space between them shrinks below 200 m.

Using 2011 census data, the 30 most populous built-up areas in the UK (population over 100,000) are as follows. (For brevity, the table lists only total population and land area; most areas have densities around 3,000–4,500 people per km² by this definition.)

The map below, created by Reddit user jesus_stalin shows these areas in geographic context. Greater London (in the southeast) clearly dwarfs the rest, with nearly 9.8 million people over ~1,738 km². Most other areas are much smaller: Manchester’s conurbation has ~2.55 M, Birmingham (West Midlands) ~2.44 M, Leeds/Bradford (West Yorkshire) ~1.78 M, etc.

For perspective, London’s built-up area had about 5,630 people per km² in 2011. That is actually quite high by world-city standards. Tokyo–Yokohama (37.8 M people, 8,775 km²) averaged roughly 4,300/km². Paris’s urban area (~11.1 M, 2,854 km²) is about 3,900/km². By contrast, sprawling American metros are much less dense: New York’s 2011 built-up area (~21.4 M, 11,344 km²) works out to only 1,900/km², and Los Angeles (~15.6 M, 6,918 km²) about 2,250/km². In other words, London’s urban core is actually denser than Tokyo or Paris, and far denser than New York or LA – even though its total population is smaller than Tokyo’s.
