Gender stereotypes are still genuinely strong across Europe. A December 2024 EU survey of 26,000+ people across all 27 member states put hard numbers on how strong, and mapping those numbers produces a consistent geographic divide between Northern and Eastern Europe that has real historical explanations.

Gender stereotypes remain strong across Europe. In December 2024, the European Commission surveyed over 26,000 people in all 27 EU member states to measure just how widespread these views are.

In Bulgaria, 37% say earning money is the most important role of a man. In Poland, just 22% think it’s acceptable for men to cry. I mapped all of it from Special Eurobarometer 545.

Take that first question. Sweden: 95%. Poland: 22%. The EU average is 51%, meaning the continent is genuinely split on this. And nearly every other question in the survey produces the same geographic shape.

In the Netherlands, 3% see earning money as a man’s primary role and 2% see homemaking as a woman’s primary role. Bulgaria comes in at 37% and 35%. On whether men are naturally less competent at household tasks, Denmark records 3% and Bulgaria 28%.

The communist period explains more of this than might initially seem obvious. Communist governments across Eastern Europe pushed women into the workforce at high rates. Female labor participation across much of the Eastern Bloc was genuinely substantial by the 1970s. But they left the household entirely alone. From the mid-1950s onward, state-ordained women’s organizations promoted a vision in which working women had to juggle their commitment to the workplace with their obligations toward the family, managing what became known as the “double burden.” The system encouraged women to hold full-time jobs while leaving domestic authority exactly where it had always been. The fall of those regimes and the economic difficulties of the 1990s did not lead to restructuring in most households.

Sweden and Denmark spent those same decades differently. Parental leave that fathers were expected to take, subsidized childcare, labor markets built around the assumption that women would work throughout their adult lives. Daily life organized that way, over enough decades, shifts what feels normal at home.

The countries on the conservative end of these maps (Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Slovakia) also share strong Orthodox or Catholic traditions. Norris and Inglehart documented a consistent link between religious conservatism and stronger gender role distinctions in Sacred and Secular (Amazon link). Those same countries also largely overlap with the former Eastern Bloc, so working out which factor carries more weight is genuinely difficult.

Country

It is unattractive for women to express strong opinions in public

Feminism has gone too far

EU27

6

17

Belgium

4

16

Bulgaria

9

17

Czechia

11

21

Denmark

2

21

Germany

4

12

Estonia

11

23

Ireland

6

18

Greece

9

21

Spain

2

27

France

3

21

Croatia

6

14

Italy

11

18

Cyprus

9

35

Latvia

9

21

Lithuania

5

22

Luxembourg

4

16

Hungary

8

14

Malta

3

18

Netherlands

1

11

Austria

6

15

Poland

12

13

Portugal

3

5

Romania

9

13

Slovenia

7

29

Slovakia

14

15

Finland

2

20

Sweden

3

10

One question breaks from the geographic pattern. On whether feminism has gone too far, Cyprus leads at 35%, Slovenia follows at 29%, then Spain at 27%. Spain, which records some of the lowest scores in this survey on breadwinner expectations and household decision-making.

Spain is a different case. The country pushed through an unusually large amount of gender legislation in a short period, a sexual consent law in 2022, mandatory gender quotas for party lists in 2023, and various other reforms in between. Laura Nuño Gómez, a political scientist at King Juan Carlos University in Madrid, noted that in Spain “as progress has been faster, the opposition to gender equality policies has also been more intense and animated.” Vox, whose campaign was built substantially around opposing feminist policy, took 12.4% of the national vote in 2023. That political context is probably where the 27% comes from, not from the same conservatism you’d find in Bulgaria or Slovakia. Portugal, worth noting, scores conservatively on financial independence (46%) but records just 5% on this question, the lowest in the EU.

Break down the United States state by state, compare each one with major European countries on human development, and something unexpected appears. The variation between American states turns out to be bigger than many realize.

The Human Development Index combines life expectancy, education, and income into a score from 0 to 1.. The UN uses it to compare living conditions worldwide. Iceland leads at 0.972. South Sudan trails at 0.388. The US? 0.938 overall.

But that single number for the entire US? It hides everything worth knowing.

Reddit user crazyboyhere made maps comparing each US state against six European countries, using 2023 data from Global Data Lab.

Comparing with Germany

Germany’s HDI stands at 0.959. Three states surpass it: Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Minnesota. The remaining forty-seven don’t.

Poland’s 0.906 beats ten American states: New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, South Carolina.

Where Does Healthcare Fit In?

Healthcare access matters most. Most European countries give everyone healthcare through public systems. In the US, you usually need a job with insurance or you pay out of pocket. Life expectancy gaps follow from that, and life expectancy is one-third of your HDI score.

Education systems work differently too. European countries often mix vocational training with traditional academics. The US leans heavily toward academic education. Both approaches produce high literacy, but they connect to economic opportunity in different ways.

America has bigger income gaps than most European countries. Europe tends to tax progressively and protect workers more aggressively. HDI doesn’t just count average income. HDI cares about how income affects actual lives, not just averages.

A fascinating map created by Reddit user bezzleford gives us a simple yet powerful visualization: European countries colored yellow if they’re happier than the United States and blue if they’re less happy, according to the 2024 World Happiness Report.

At first glance, there’s a clear geographical pattern. Northern and parts of Western Europe glow yellow, while Southern, Eastern, and parts of Central Europe are colored blue. This isn’t just a pretty color scheme – it represents real differences in how people evaluate their lives.

The Yellow Belt of European Happiness

These nations cover approximately 1.89 million square kilometers (730,000 square miles), representing about 18.5% of Europe’s land area, and are home to roughly 162 million people, accounting for approximately 22% of Europe’s population. These happier-than-US countries include:

All five Nordic countries (Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Norway)

The United Kingdom and Ireland

The Benelux countries (Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg)

Austria and Switzerland

Czechia and Slovenia

But what makes these yellow-colored countries happier than the United States?

Why These Countries Rank Higher: The Happiness Factors

The happiness gap isn’t small. Finland tops the global happiness rankings with a score of 7.74 (on a 0-10 scale), while the US ranks 23rd with 6.73. Here’s why many European countries outrank America:

Social Security Systems. Nordic and many Western European countries feature robust safety nets that reduce anxiety about healthcare, education, and old age. When Finns get sick, they don’t worry about medical bills. When Dutch parents have children, they receive substantial parental leave. These systems create a baseline of security that contributes significantly to overall happiness.

Work-Life Balance. Countries in the yellow zone typically enjoy more vacation time and shorter working hours. The Netherlands averages a 29-hour work week, compared to America’s 38+ hours. More time for family, hobbies, and relaxation translates directly into higher life satisfaction.

Lower Inequality. The happier European nations generally have more equitable income distribution. Denmark’s Gini coefficient (a measure of inequality) is 0.26, compared to America’s 0.39. Research consistently shows that high inequality correlates with lower average happiness, even in wealthy countries.

Urban Design and Transportation. Many yellow-zone countries feature cities designed around people rather than cars. Walkable neighborhoods, excellent public transportation, and bicycle infrastructure make daily life less stressful and more pleasant. The average Danish person cycles 1.6 km daily – exercise that improves both physical and mental health.

Trust in Institutions. Citizens in Nordic and many Western European countries report higher trust in their governments, police, and fellow citizens. Finland, Denmark, and Norway consistently rank among the world’s least corrupt nations. This trust creates social cohesion that supports happiness.

The Blue Zone: Why Southern and Eastern Europe Rank Lower

The blue-colored countries on the map face different challenges:

Many Southern European nations (Spain, Italy, Greece) continue to deal with economic difficulties following the 2008 financial crisis and COVID-19 pandemic

Several Eastern European countries are still navigating post-communist transitions

Higher corruption levels and lower trust in institutions prevail in many blue-zone countries

However, the map shows some surprising exceptions. Czechia and Slovenia – both post-communist states – now rank happier than the US, suggesting that the historical East-West happiness divide is shifting.

What Can We Learn From This Map?

This simple yellow-blue visualization invites us to think about what creates happiness at a societal level. The geographical clustering suggests that happiness isn’t just an individual matter but is shaped by social systems, policies, and cultural factors that vary across regions.

For Americans looking at this map, it raises important questions: What policies and practices from the yellow-zone countries might improve well-being in the US? Is the American emphasis on individual achievement and economic growth sufficient for creating a happy society?

Imagine buying a liter of milk in one country, then traveling to another where milk is sold by the gallon. Confusing? Absolutely. But for much of history, that was normal. The world was a patchwork of different measurement systems, each with its own logic—or lack thereof.

Before the metric system, countries used a variety of measurement systems, often with little consistency. Among the most notable were:

The Imperial System (UK and former British colonies) – Included inches, feet, yards, miles, pounds, and gallons.

US Customary System – Similar to the imperial system but with some key differences, such as volume measurements.

Various Local Systems – Many countries had their own traditional units, from the Japanese shaku to the Russian verst.

This lack of standardization made international trade, science, and engineering unnecessarily complicated. Something had to change.

The Birth of the Metric System and Its Scientific Basis

The metric system was born out of the French Revolution in 1799. It was designed to be logical, universal, and based on immutable natural phenomena. Key features included:

Base-10 Simplicity – Everything is based on powers of ten, making conversions straightforward.

Tied to Nature – The meter was originally defined as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole. Later, it was refined based on the speed of light.

Standardized Across Disciplines – Scientists, engineers, and everyday people could all use the same units without confusion.

Why Countries Switched to the Metric System

The benefits of the metric system were too good to ignore:

Easier Trade and Communication – A global standard made commerce smoother.

Simpler Education – Children no longer had to memorize complex conversion factors.

Scientific Progress – Almost all scientific research uses metric, allowing for seamless collaboration.

Better Engineering and Manufacturing – Metric precision improves consistency in design and production.

The Global Shift: Who Switched First and Who Lagged Behind

France led the charge, adopting the metric system officially in 1799. Other European nations followed, often gradually. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, most of the world had either switched or begun the transition.

However, a few countries have held out. Notably:

The United States – Despite officially recognizing the metric system in 1866 and making it legal for trade, the U.S. still primarily uses customary units in daily life.

Liberia and Myanmar – These two countries historically resisted but have recently started shifting toward metric.

Why Some Countries Still Use Alternative Systems

If the metric system is so great, why hasn’t everyone switched?

Cultural Inertia – People are used to what they know. Changing signage, education, and manufacturing standards is costly and time-consuming.

Economic Factors – Some industries, particularly in the U.S., would face huge expenses in transitioning to metric.

Public Resistance – Many Americans, for instance, feel no urgency to change, since the current system still works for them.

The Future: Will the Whole World Go Metric?

The trend suggests that even holdout countries are slowly shifting. In the U.S., industries like medicine, science, and global manufacturing already use metric. In everyday life, dual-labeling (e.g., soda sold in liters) is common. Over time, the push for standardization may lead to full adoption, but for now, inches, pounds, and miles persist in a few corners of the world.

Despite relatively low crime rates in recent years, Americans’ overall trust in one another has dramatically declined.

Reddit user Mancub created a striking comparison of trust levels across various regions of the United States between 1972 and 2022, using data from the latest General Social Survey (GSS) conducted by the National Opinion Research Center. This sociological survey has been tracking changes in American society since 1972. These data were then visualized in maps of the United States.

In 1972, over 60% of people in the Heartland trusted most others. By 2022, this number had plummeted to the 20-30% range.

The South-Central region showed low trust levels in the ’70s, with 30-40% of people trusting others. This has worsened, with under 20% of residents now considering others trustworthy.

Overall, the national percentage of people who trust most others has fallen from 46.2% to a dismal 25.3% — now, only 1 in 4 Americans agree that most people can be trusted.

What’s Behind the Decline in Trust?

Social trust is linked to higher civic participation, lower corruption, better disaster resilience, reduced economic inequality, and fewer illegal activities. It is also associated with better health, happiness, and intelligence. The decline in any of these factors could contribute to the drop in generalized trust, but this is only part of the story.

From 1972 to 2022, generalized trust was consistently lower among non-White Americans compared to White Americans. The consensus on lower trust among non-Whites points to systemic racism, racial discrimination, neighborhood conditions, and economic inequality.

During this period, White Americans’ trust in “most people” also declined. There is less agreement on the reasons for the decline in trust among Whites. However, leading theories suggest a reaction to America’s increasing diversity and the perceived “end of White Christian America.”

The traits of introversion and extraversion are key elements in some human personality theories. The terms extraversion and introversion were proposed by Carl Jung. Extraversion is revealed in talkative, outgoing, and active behavior, whereas introversion is revealed in more contemplative and reserved behavior.

Quiet: The Power of Introverts… writer Susan Cain describes extraversion and introversion in terms of priorities for different levels of stimulation -distinguishing it from fear of social judgment or shyness. Introverts prefer loneliness to social activities.

Characteristics of introverts and extroverts

Introverts

recharge by spending time alone

reflect before deciding and acting

listen more than talk

more sociable with people they know

enjoy one-on-one conversation

introspective

self-aware

learn thorough observations

Extroverts

Recharge by socializing

Decide quickly

Speak more

Enjoy being the center of attention

Outgoing

Easily distracted

Action-oriented

Sociable and expressive

Great communicators

Extraversion and introversion are commonly regarded as a single continuum, so to be high in one necessitates being low in the other. Besides extroverts and introverts, some psychologists sometimes distinguish two other types – ambiverts and omniverts.

Extrovert is a sociable, somewhat unreserved personality. Likes and recharges by being with other people.

Introvert is prefers barely stimulating environments and desires time alone to recharge.

Omnivert is someone who can be either at various times.

Ambivert is representing aspects of both introversion and extraversion.

According to Barry Smith, director of the Laboratories of Human Psychophysiology at the University of Maryland, ambiverts make up 68% of the population.

That may seem astonishing for some since Americans are thought to be very extroverted compared to Europeans, but the truth is that the culture really values extroversion over introversion. However, the value of extroversion over introversion doesn’t make extroversion more dominant. It just pressures people who find themselves on the introversion side of the spectrum to behave more extroverted, while true extroverts get positive reinforcement from the American culture that their temperament is the default.

The results from two randomized samples reveal that half of the U.S. population is introverted, or at least falls along the introvert side of the spectrum (50.2% of the U.S. population is slightly more introverted). The map below shows extraversion and introversion in the United States according to the NERIS Analytics data.

The most extroverted states in the United States are California and New York (50.9%). Texas, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, and Illinois are also more extroverted than introverted. The most introverted states in the United States are West Virginia (53.3%) accompanied by Maine (53.2%), Alaska, and Wyoming (52.9%).

According to Susan Cain, author of the book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, the modern Western culture misjudges the capabilities of introverted people, favor extroverted personalities, people who act quickly, appear friendly, and are outgoing.

While a majority of Eastern cultures favor people who are more reflective, quiet, and appear serene. Introverts in these cultures don’t feel the stigma to be extroverted and so are more accepting of their natural identity.

The words introversion and extraversion were presented in psychology by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung.

Extraversion is the state of predominantly getting gratification from beyond oneself. Extraverts are prone to enjoy human interactions and be enthusiastic and talkative. They like being around other people. They enjoy activities that affect big social gatherings, such as parties and demonstrations.

Introversion is the state of being primarily interested in one’s own cognitive self. Introverts are generally sensed as more reserved or thoughtful. Introvert persons predominantly enjoy time consumed sole and find less reward in time spent with sizeable groups of people. They are readily overwhelmed by excessively much stimulation from any social gatherings.

Can you be both extroverted and introverted?

Our brain is the most complicated structure in the known universe. With 100 billion neurons, our characteristics are much more intricate than the binary introvert and extrovert distinctions. There is a spectrum. Many people do not feel that they belong to one distinct category.

For instance, suppose you’re an introvert-extroverted. You may feel that you’re primarily introverted, but you don’t always choose to be isolated or in small companies, and you can feel energized when you’re around the right mass at the right time.

Edmund Conklin also declared in 1923 the presence of ambiverts, regarding them to be the most ‘normal’ with individuals exhibiting flexibility between the two extremes.

But if simplified, being extroverted and introverted is like falling into one of two containers: Would you preferably be the center of attention or remain as far away from the public eye as you can? Would you rather stay at a house on a Friday night in your pajamas or go to the bars with a sizeable group of pals?

Extraverts and Introverts in Europe

Just under half of the global population (about 44%) is introverted. Europe has many countries that are considered introverted. Lithuania is the most introverted nation in Europe, while Albania is a nation of extroverts.

The map below shows extraversion and introversion in Europe according to the NERIS Analytics data.

Overall, North-eastern Europe tends to be more introverted, and south-eastern Europeans tend to be more extroverted. Below is the animated version of this map.

Europe stands as a fascinating mosaic of generational experiences, where national borders intersect with demographic patterns that reveal deep insights into societal evolution. The map of generational distribution across European countries offers a compelling narrative of how different age groups have shaped and continue to influence the continent’s cultural, economic, and social landscapes.

The Generational Breakdown: More Than Just Numbers

The generational map presents an intriguing snapshot of demographic diversity. Boomers, those born between 1944 and 1964, dominate a significant portion of European countries, including major economic powerhouses like Germany, France, and Italy. These nations carry the legacy of post-World War II reconstruction and economic expansion, with generations shaped by periods of remarkable social and technological transformation.

Boomer Nations: Foundations of Modern Europe

Countries with predominant Boomer populations represent the backbone of European economic and social structures. This generation witnessed extraordinary changes – from the Cold War’s conclusion to the rise of the European Union. In nations like Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Spain, Boomers have been instrumental in rebuilding national identities and driving economic modernization.

Their characteristics typically include:

Strong work ethic developed during economic rebuilding periods

Preference for traditional career paths and hierarchical structures

Value placed on stability and long-term planning

Significant political and economic decision-making influence

Gen X: The Bridging Generation

Countries such as Belgium, United Kingdom, and Poland represent the Gen X demographic majority. Born between 1964 and 1979, this generation uniquely bridges analog and digital worlds. They experienced the transition from traditional communication methods to the early internet age, developing remarkable adaptability.

Gen X is characterized by:

High technological adaptability

Entrepreneurial spirit

Work-life balance consciousness

Skepticism towards institutional structures

Critical thinking developed during significant geopolitical transformations

Millennials: Europe’s Digital Pioneers

In countries like Belarus, Cyprus, and Sweden, Millennials form the generational majority. Born between 1980 and 1994, they are characterized by their digital nativity, global connectivity, and different approach to work and social structures.

Millennial traits include:

Strong digital literacy

Preference for flexible work arrangements

Higher education levels

Global and multicultural perspectives

Emphasis on personal fulfillment over traditional career paths

Future Projections: Generational Dynamics in Transition

Demographic trends suggest a significant shift in the coming decades. Aging populations in Boomer-dominant countries will gradually transfer leadership roles to Gen X and Millennials. This transition promises profound changes in:

Political decision-making

Economic strategies

Social welfare systems

Technological innovation

Experts predict increased integration of digital technologies, more flexible work models, and a reimagining of traditional societal structures.

Instagram user Matt Shirley asked his 300 thousand followers to vote on which US state their home state liked and disliked the most. The result was this funny map.

Whereas in the “Every State’s Least Favorite State” map, many nearby states held complaints towards each other, you can see in many cases in the “Every State’s Favorite Other State” map. People also chose their nearby states to be their favorite states.

California is the most disliked state by the other US states. At the same time, New Jersey and New Hampshire were marked as least favorite by five and four states, sequentially. The residents of Florida demonstrated honesty and admitted to disliking their own state the most. In contrast, New Jersey residents hate all states at once.

Florida and Colorado are the most favorite states admired by five U.S. states each. Minnesota and New Hampshire are right after them, with 4 states each mentioning them as their favorite. In possibly the least unexpected information ever, Connecticut beloves Massachusetts, while New Jersey is mapped here as liking no U.S. states.

Happiness can be a subjective and complex topic that depends on various factors. However, several studies and surveys have attempted to measure and identify the happiest places in the United States. These studies often consider factors like economic stability, job satisfaction, social support, work-life balance, access to healthcare, and overall quality of life.

One well-known survey that examines happiness in the United States is the Gallup-Sharecare Well-Being Index, which measures well-being across various states and cities. According to this index, as of 2021, states like Hawaii, Colorado, and Utah often ranked among the highest in terms of happiness and well-being.

Hawaii, in particular, consistently ranked as one of the happiest states in the U.S., largely due to its beautiful natural surroundings, favorable climate, and strong sense of community. Other factors, like a healthy lifestyle, strong social connections, and a strong economy, also contribute to the overall happiness of residents in these states.

Keep in mind that happiness can vary depending on personal preferences, lifestyle, and individual circumstances. Additionally, rankings and happiness factors may have changed since my last update. For the most up-to-date information, I recommend referring to more recent studies and reports on happiness in the United States.

The map below shows the happiest states in the U.S. according to Gallup Health and Well-Being Index 2021.

Data are based on more than 500 thousand surveys with U.S. adults.

The Well-Being Index is calculated on a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 represents the lowest possible wellbeing and 100 represents the highest possible wellbeing. The Well-Being Index including 5 essential elements of wellbeing: Career, Social, Financial, Community, and Physical.
