Spain had the highest number of international overnight stays in Europe, reaching 329 million. France, which welcomes more tourists than any other country, recorded 150 million overnight stays. In 2025, France saw 102 million tourist arrivals (Travel and Tour World), while Spain had 97 million. The arrivals gap is small. The overnight stays gap is not.

Mallorca logged 47.2 million international overnight stays in 2023. The whole of Switzerland logged 27.7 million. The Canary Islands and Balearics pull visitors in for a week or two. Paris and the Riviera draw shorter stays, and many visitors cross from Belgium, Germany, or Switzerland without spending a night at all.

Türkiye at 154 million edges out France at 150 million, which tends to catch people off guard. The UK follows at 149 million.

EU overnight stays grew 40% between 2009 and 2019, international visitors up 53%. 2020 cut 51% of that away in one year. 2023 was when the EU finally cleared the 2019 total, at 2.94 billion overnight stays.

America has thousands of attractions that don’t charge admission. CashNetUSA looked at TripAdvisor ratings to figure out which ones visitors actually loved in each state. They filtered results to include only attractions with 750+ reviews (North Dakota got a lower bar at 250 reviews because there are fewer options there).

What came out: one top-rated free attraction per state.

Duncan McClellan Gallery in Florida Takes First

St. Petersburg’s glass art gallery scored 4.95 stars—the highest in America. Duncan and Irene McClellan turned an old fish and tomato packing plant into this gallery, which includes a sculpture garden. People love the weekend glass blowing demos.

Every State’s Winner

In California, the top spot goes to the Mendocino Coast, earning 4.87 stars. The route passes Pacific beaches, old lighthouses, and fishing villages that look much the same as they did a century ago. In New York, Liberty Park at the World Trade Center took the lead with 4.79 stars. While many might expect Central Park to win, Liberty Park came out on top.

Tips for Saving Money

No admission charge, but you’ll still spend on gas, parking, and whatever catches your kid’s eye in the gift shop.

Pack food. You can either prepare sandwiches at home or pack some snacks. Most of these locations have dining areas. Have a real breakfast before you leave—hungry kids are whiny kids.

Carpool. Multiple families going? Pile into one car and split the gas.

Set a souvenir budget. Give each kid $15 when you walk in. That’s what they get to spend. No more begging, no more “please can I have this.” They pick what matters to them and you’re off the hook.

These tricks won’t make the trip completely free, but they’ll keep it cheap.

Where This Data Comes From

TripAdvisor users left reviews through July 2025. Attractions needed at least 750 reviews to make the cut. North Dakota attractions only needed 250 because there aren’t as many there to begin with.

From coast to coast, the United States is home to countless towns and cities that bear the names of faraway places. These names are more than just labels; they tell stories of settlers who brought a piece of their homeland with them, embedding it into the American landscape. Whether you’re exploring the tulip festival in Holland, Michigan, or marveling at the Swedish Dala horses in Lindsborg, Kansas, you can catch glimpses of the world without ever leaving the country.

This phenomenon of naming American towns after foreign counterparts dates back to the earliest days of European colonization. Settlers often named their new homes after the cities and towns they left behind, creating a patchwork of familiar names in unfamiliar territory. Over time, these “sequel” towns have evolved into unique places, often bearing little resemblance to their namesakes but still offering a connection to their origins.

The Origins of American Place Names: A State-by-State Journey

Using data from Axios, the team at Word Finder X set out to explore the global origins of U.S. place names. Analyzing 1,396 locations across the country, they uncovered the most common country of origin for town and city names in each state. England, not surprisingly, topped the list in 18 states, while Germany followed with seven. In states like Wisconsin, towns like Berlin have retained their names, though they’ve adapted their pronunciation to fit the American tongue.

Six states stand out for their unique connections to other countries. For example, Texas has a notable number of towns named after places in the Czech Republic, while Arizona features place names rooted in Greece. Indiana, Minnesota, West Virginia, and New Mexico each have distinct foreign influences, connecting them to Mexico, Norway, Scotland, and Spain, respectively.

American Cities with British Roots

The influence of British place names is especially strong, with many American towns and cities named after locations in the United Kingdom. These names often reflected a sense of homesickness or pride among early settlers, and some have grown to surpass their original counterparts. Boston, Massachusetts, for instance, is a bustling metropolis with a population of 650,000, far outpacing its namesake, Boston, Lincolnshire, in the UK.

Other towns like Greenwich, Connecticut, reflect the deep ties between the U.S. and England, with names that once symbolized the connection between the British crown and its colonies. The legacy of these names continues to shape the identity of American towns and cities today.

Road Trips: Traveling the World Within California and New York

If you’re looking to explore these globally inspired place names, you don’t have to travel far. In California, you can go on a road trip that takes you through destinations like Slovenia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and Switzerland, all without leaving the state. One stop, New Idria, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past as a ghost town named after an Austrian mining site (now in Slovenia).

Meanwhile, New York offers its own journey through foreign lands, with stops in places like Peru, Angola, and India.

A Nation of Names and Stories

The United States is a young country, but its place names are steeped in history. Each town and city name carries with it a story—sometimes simple, sometimes complex, but always intriguing. From ancient civilizations to modern nations, these names are a testament to the diverse influences that have shaped America’s cultural landscape.

Travel advisories are official government recommendations regarding the safety of traveling to specific countries or regions. These advisories help citizens make informed decisions about international travel by providing up-to-date information on potential risks, including political instability, crime, terrorism, and health concerns. Understanding these advisories is crucial for anyone planning to explore our diverse world map.

Recently, Reddit user Papi_voyeur created an intriguing mini atlas of world maps comparing travel advisories from eight major countries: the United States, China, Russia, Canada, France, Germany, Poland, and South Korea. These maps offer a unique perspective on how different nations perceive global travel risks, revealing fascinating patterns across the world map.

Political Patterns in Travel Advisories:

Western Alignment: The world maps from the US, Canada, and European countries often show similar travel advisory patterns, particularly regarding regions like the Middle East, parts of Africa, and certain South American countries.

Geopolitical Rivalries: Countries with tense diplomatic relations often issue stricter advisories for each other. For example, the US and Russia may have more severe warnings about traveling to each other’s territories.

Regional Influences: Asian countries like China and South Korea sometimes have different perspectives on neighboring nations compared to Western countries, as evident in their world map advisories.

Historical Ties: Former colonial powers may have more nuanced advisories for their ex-colonies, reflecting deeper cultural understanding and ongoing connections.

Economic Interests: Countries with significant trade or investment in certain regions may provide more lenient advisories to encourage continued engagement.

Digging Deeper: What Else Can We Learn?

The world maps comparison reveals even more fascinating aspects of global travel advisories:

Safety Consensus: By overlaying these maps, we can spot which countries are universally considered safe or risky for travel.

Cultural Perspectives: The varying advisories highlight how different cultures perceive and tolerate risk.

Intelligence Networks: Some countries provide more detailed advisories for certain regions, hinting at their diplomatic presence or information-gathering capabilities.

Changing Landscapes: Tracking how these advisories change over time can reveal shifting global dynamics and emerging hotspots.

Travel Planning Impact: Understanding these advisories is crucial for travelers, as they often influence travel insurance coverage and terms.

There is carpet treading. And then there is historic carpet-treading.

Observing people’s homes is an intriguing and completely legitimate pastime, even if you have no intentions of relocating. But when you get tired of following up your fantasy searches on Rightmove with IRL appointments, you can always take the hobby deeper by visiting a bona fide historic house.

Defined as a home that is old enough, architecturally or nationally noteworthy enough, and well-preserved enough to be of public interest, a historic house tends to offer a little more to its visitors than the average house on the market. The furnishings and relics may charm, the architecture and grounds may be impressive, and additional excursions and presentations may give you the sense of accomplishment that comes with ticking another museum off the list.

But perhaps most striking of all is the atmosphere of walking in the footsteps and laying in the bed (disclaimer: don’t do this) of the great and the good (and the awful). MoverDB.com investigated the most popular houses in Europe and also identified some hidden gems that may not receive many visitors but are highly rated.

Methodology

MoverDB.com created a list of 1,563 historic houses from every European country to help people discover the most popular ones and the lesser-known hidden gems. Historic houses encompass a variety of structures, such as castles, palaces, manors, birthplaces of notable individuals, converted museums, and buildings that have been turned into home museums for display purposes.

They examined each of their Tripadvisor review pages using a seed list, paying attention to the number of reviews and the percentage of 5-star reviews.

The MoverDB.com team then calculated the number of reviews as a proxy for ranking the most visited historic houses.

To find the best-hidden gems, they searched for historic houses with at least 25 reviews, but that were still in the bottom third percentile of review counts among all historic houses on their list. This ensured they were only considering attractions with a reasonable representation of visitors. The attractions that receive fewer visitors were ranked based on the percentage of 5-star visitor reviews they received.

Due to uncertainties surrounding the current accessibility of attractions in Ukraine, historic houses from there were skipped from the final analysis.

The data for this study is correct as of May 2023.

The British Isles is home to numerous castles, reflecting the rich history and architectural heritage of the region. While it is difficult to provide an exact number, as new information and discoveries can continuously update our understanding, it is estimated that there are over 4,000 castles in the British Isles. These castles vary in size, age, and architectural style, ranging from ancient ruins to well-preserved fortifications. Some of the most famous castles include the Tower of London, Windsor Castle, Edinburgh Castle, Caernarfon Castle, and Stirling Castle, among many others.

A castle is a fortified structure typically built during the Middle Ages, characterized by its defensive features and imposing appearance. It served as a residence for noble families, a symbol of power and authority, and a stronghold for military purposes. Castles were primarily constructed using stone or brick and consisted of various elements, such as walls, towers, gates, and courtyards.

The design of a castle was intended to provide strategic advantages in warfare, with features like thick walls, battlements, and moats. Towers, often located at the corners or along the walls, provided vantage points for defenders to observe and defend against potential threats. The main entrance to a castle was usually protected by a fortified gatehouse, which could include a drawbridge, portcullis (a heavy iron gate), and murder holes (openings in the ceiling to drop projectiles or pour boiling liquids on attackers).

Inside the castle, there were different areas for different functions. The keep or the central tower was the heart of the castle, serving as the lord’s residence and the last line of defense. It often housed living quarters, great halls for feasting, and other essential rooms. The castle could also have additional buildings for specific purposes like stables, kitchens, chapels, and storage facilities.

How many castles are there in the British Isles?

The British Isles have a rich history of castles, and the exact number can vary depending on how one defines a castle. However, it is estimated that there are thousands of castles in the British Isles, encompassing England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

England alone is known to have had around 1,500 castles, although not all of them are still intact. Scotland also boasts a significant number of castles, with estimates ranging from 1,200 to 2,000 castles, including both intact structures and ruins. Wales, known for its impressive medieval fortifications, is believed to have had around 400 castles, although many are now in ruins.

In addition, there are numerous castles and fortifications in Northern Ireland, although the exact count is more challenging to determine.

This tradition has attracted countless tourists over the years, making Blarney Castle one of Ireland’s most visited landmarks.

The castle itself has a long history, with its origins dating back to the 10th century.

Which castles in the British Isles have never been captured?

Several castles in the British Isles have impressive records of never being captured by force throughout their histories. Here are a few notable examples:

Which castles are the most unusual in the British Isles?

The British Isles are home to a variety of unique and unusual castles. Here are a few examples that stand out for their distinctive features or histories:

Dunmore Pineapple (Scotland): While not a traditional castle, the Dunmore Pineapple in Falkirk, Scotland, is an unusual architectural structure.
Free camping is camping overnight in your recreational vehicle or tent at a place where you do not have to spend. Most free camping spots are not in developed campgrounds. Free camping sites are sometimes called boondocking, dispersed camping, dry camping, and primitive camping.

Free campgrounds are desired by some travelers only because it doesn’t cost money. Still, others may find extra advantages to free camping, including the amusements of camping without conveniences, the opportunity to camp far from other people, and enjoying the beauty of wildlife. But not all countries in Europe have the same rules for free camping.

Below you can find travel rules for free camping in Europe created by Vita. This map is aimed to help campers and vanlifers with safe free-camping and boondocking around Europe and beyond.

The map creator had spent recent months collecting about where we all can camp freely around Europe and where we can’t really. This map was created after hundreds of discussions with people from many countries, Facebook groups, and the road. It is the current state of Europe.

On top of the map, the creator of the map also co-founded a website with lovely places along the way (after 10 years of caravanning with family). So that’s where his knowledge is coming from.

The map is a view from a perspective of a vanlifer or camper with a motorhome of any kind. It’s not for travelers with tents, and it might be a bit of guidance for caravans.

Best practices for wild camping

Sleeping for one night — as a tired driver, you should be fine sleeping on the road in all European countries.

Roaming & parking — if you don’t set up any camping gear outside, it is more tolerated than full camping.

Camping, wild camping, or free camping — this usually involves taking your chairs, table, and awning out.

National Park & beaches — it’s usually illegal to spend the night in National Parks all over Europe and on beaches in the southwest of Europe.

The high season — July & August — is usually more strict than the off-season in summer destinations.

Often when people are exploring a new place, they’re happy to spend that little bit more to cross things off of their bucket list and experience something new.

From historical monuments and cultural landmarks, walled gardens to zoos and theme parks and galleries lined with paintings from famous artists, tourist attractions offer something for everyone.

But which attractions around the world can you afford to miss out on?

Whether because of the entrance fee, the cost of parking, or the food and drink onsite, SavingSpot analyzed TripAdvisor reviews of popular attractions in 134 countries and all 50 US States to reveal which ones visitors deemed ‘too expensive’…

Filtering by country and US state, SavingSpot analyzed the TripAdvisor reviews section of every attraction and recorded the number of mentions of the word “expensive”. The attraction with the most mentions of the word “expensive” in each state/country was deemed the worst value attraction.

The team split the attractions into different categories based on what they’re listed on TripAdvisor, creating nine final categories: Architectural Buildings, Art Galleries, Castles, Gardens, Historic Sites, Museums, Theme Parks and Water Parks, Sightseeing Tours and Zoos and Aquariums.

The data was collected in December 2021.

Here’s a preview of the world map, showing each country’s worst value attraction:

In Europe, the Italian Renaissance ushered in the idea of the public garden. But it took until the 19th century for these gardens to catch on in other countries worldwide.

Now, lush botanical gardens of all shapes and sizes are dotted worldwide, and their beauty inspires equal parts serenity and exploration.

But which of these gardens are truly worth the visit?

Throughout December 2021, HouseFresh used TripAdvisor to gather data on the most beautiful gardens in the world by searching Things To Do using the keyword “beautiful” in each country of the world and each U.S. state. Then, they extracted the attractions labeled as gardens.

The Most Beautiful Gardens in the World

When traveling somewhere new, visiting a public garden might be high up on your list of things to do. Aside from being stunning, these spaces also provide a unique insight into each country’s flora and fauna, detailing the location’s history and culture.
