EU overnight stays grew 40% between 2009 and 2019, international visitors up 53%. 2020 cut 51% of that away in one year. 2023 was when the EU finally cleared the 2019 total, at 2.94 billion overnight stays.

Most top hidden gems can be found in England, but the 17th-century Lissan House estate in Northern Ireland (95 reviews, 82.1% rated ‘excellent’) also ranks.

Methodology

MoverDB.com created a list of 1,563 historic houses from every European country to help people discover the most popular ones and the lesser-known hidden gems. Historic houses encompass a variety of structures, such as castles, palaces, manors, birthplaces of notable individuals, converted museums, and buildings that have been turned into home museums for display purposes.

They examined each of their Tripadvisor review pages using a seed list, paying attention to the number of reviews and the percentage of 5-star reviews.

The MoverDB.com team then calculated the number of reviews as a proxy for ranking the most visited historic houses.

To find the best-hidden gems, they searched for historic houses with at least 25 reviews, but that were still in the bottom third percentile of review counts among all historic houses on their list. This ensured they were only considering attractions with a reasonable representation of visitors. The attractions that receive fewer visitors were ranked based on the percentage of 5-star visitor reviews they received.

Due to uncertainties surrounding the current accessibility of attractions in Ukraine, historic houses from there were skipped from the final analysis.

The data for this study is correct as of May 2023.

Below you can find travel rules for free camping in Europe created by Vita. This map is aimed to help campers and vanlifers with safe free-camping and boondocking around Europe and beyond. 

The map creator had spent recent months collecting about where we all can camp freely around Europe and where we can’t really. This map was created after hundreds of discussions with people from many countries, Facebook groups, and the road. It is the current state of Europe.

On top of the map, the creator of the map also co-founded a website with lovely places along the way (after 10 years of caravanning with family). So that’s where his knowledge is coming from.

The map is a view from a perspective of a vanlifer or camper with a motorhome of any kind. It’s not for travelers with tents, and it might be a bit of guidance for caravans. 

Best practices for wild camping

1. Sleeping for one night — as a tired driver, you should be fine sleeping on the road in all European countries.
2. Roaming & parking — if you don’t set up any camping gear outside, it is more tolerated than full camping.
3. Camping, wild camping, or free camping — this usually involves taking your chairs, table, and awning out.
4. National Park & beaches — it’s usually illegal to spend the night in National Parks all over Europe and on beaches in the southwest of Europe.
5. The high season — July & August — is usually more strict than the off-season in summer destinations.

Whether because of the entrance fee, the cost of parking, or the food and drink onsite, SavingSpot analyzed TripAdvisor reviews of popular attractions in 134 countries and all 50 US States to reveal which ones visitors deemed ‘too expensive’…

Filtering by country and US state, SavingSpot analyzed the TripAdvisor reviews section of every attraction and recorded the number of mentions of the word “expensive”. The attraction with the most mentions of the word “expensive” in each state/country was deemed the worst value attraction.

The team split the attractions into different categories based on what they’re listed on TripAdvisor, creating nine final categories: Architectural Buildings, Art Galleries, Castles, Gardens, Historic Sites, Museums, Theme Parks and Water Parks, Sightseeing Tours and Zoos and Aquariums.

The data was collected in December 2021.

North America

According to Tripadvisor reviews, Universal Studios Florida is too expensive and some visitors expected better for what they paid. Although ticket prices are expected to be somewhat expensive in exchange for the experience, the main issue – outside of repetitive rides and the waiting lines to go on them – is the price of food and drink, and add-ons such as photo packages and parking.

According to 3,189 TripAdvisor reviews about the attraction, Universal Studios Florida – a theme park popular with movie buffs, thrill seekers and entertainment fans – is the worst value tourists attraction in the U.S. Like many theme parks and days out, the real cost adds up for buying food and drink.

Canada is a frequent travel bucket list contender, from its stunning landscapes and spectacular cities to its ancient and contemporary cultures. But with so much to see and do, how do we know which tourist attractions really aren’t worth the money?

The CN Tower, a communications and observation tower in downtown Toronto, is the worst value attraction overall, with 2,241 mentions of the word “expensive.” Interestingly, three of the top 10 worst value attractions are animal attractions, including Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada, Vancouver Aquarium, and Toronto Zoo.

But many things which are popular with tourists have a hefty price tag. Visitors to Sugarloaf Mountain took to Tripadvisor to express that while they felt that the view was worth experiencing, the guided tour to the top was far too expensive.

According to its Tripadvisor reviews, Chatsworth House is the worst value art attraction. Although renowned for the quality of its art and landscape, which continues to evolve to reflect current tastes, passions, and interests, 1,183 visitors found the stately home too expensive to visit. In addition to the cost of food and drink, visitors were irked at the cost of parking, which is £20 per car for any event.

Warwick Castle, originally built by William the Conqueror during 1068 and situated on a meander of the River Avon in Warwickshire, England, is the worst value castle attraction according to TripAdvisor reviews. 3,067 visitors found that the entrance fee was too expensive.
