Russian forces have taken about 4,669 km² (1,803 square miles) in Ukraine over the past year. A map comparison shows this pace matches WWI's Western Front from 1915-16. At the Somme in 1916, four months of fighting gained just 12 km (7.5 miles) and cost over 1 million casualties.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Three years have gone by. The war has stalled. Throughout 2024 and 2025, Russian forces took about 4,669 km² (1,803 square miles). That’s half of Puerto Rico’s size after a full year of fighting. Most of the combat happened in eastern Donetsk. Villages there changed hands repeatedly while the line itself barely moved.

A Reddit user named 4g3nt58 overlaid Ukraine’s recent territorial changes with WWI’s Western Front from 1915-16. The scales match eerily. Both show frontlines that barely shift.

So what explains this? Modern armies have powerful weapons, yet frontlines still inch forward.

Before Gunpowder: Speed Measured in Footsteps

Medieval battles sometimes ended quickly. One army routed, the other won. But occupying territory happened at walking pace. A medieval army covered 15-25 km (9-16 miles) daily before exhaustion hit. Marching in armor was brutal. Supply wagons needed oxen. Finding food and water took constant effort. Alexander the Great’s armies were known for their speed, covering 20-30 km (12-19 miles) daily on long campaigns.

Europe got cannons in the 14th century. Siege warfare transformed. Field battles didn’t. Early cannons broke down constantly, took forever to reload, and cost a fortune. Firearms became battle-ready by the 16th century. Here’s the catch: better offensive weapons meant defenders could fortify better too. Attacking successfully meant assembling larger forces, planning more carefully, and building stronger supply chains.

1914-1918: When Firepower Outpaced Mobility

WWI pushed defensive warfare to absurd extremes. Machine guns could kill at hundreds of meters. Barbed wire stopped infantry attacks cold. Between Belgium and Switzerland, trenches stretched for 475 miles (764 km).

On July 1, 1916, the British began their Somme attack. Artillery had pounded German lines for a week. British commanders thought the bombardment had destroyed everything. German machine guns survived in deep bunkers and massacred the attacking infantry. That day produced 57,470 British casualties and nearly 20,000 deaths. Along a 24-km (15-mile) section, the advance averaged 330 meters (0.2 miles).

The Somme continued through mid-November. The ground captured came to about 12 km (7.5 miles). Casualties were staggering: Britain lost 420,000, France 200,000, Germany around 500,000. Verdun that same year went on for ten months and produced territorial changes so small you could walk across them in under an hour. About 700,000 men were killed or wounded there. In some places, German defensive lines ran back 14 miles (22 km) from the front, with concrete bunkers and multiple belts of barbed wire (Amazon link).

1943-1944: Geography Trumps Technology in Italy

WWII introduced tanks, aircraft, and motorized transport. Italy proved that terrain matters more than equipment. On September 9, 1943, Allied troops landed at Salerno. By December’s end, they’d pushed 123 km (76 miles) north and then hit a wall at Monte Cassino. The Germans had selected mountainous positions with limited roads. Valleys and fortified lines like the Volturno and Bernhardt funneled attacks into narrow corridors.

May 1944 saw German propaganda leaflets distributed to Allied soldiers. One mapped the advance from Salerno to Cassino, claiming eight months of fighting had produced “about 1,000 casualties for each kilometer.” The leaflets aimed to damage morale. What they documented was how difficult breaking fortified positions becomes, even with complete air dominance.

German propaganda leaflet mocking the progress of Allied forces in southern Italy (1944)

Four major offensives between January and May 1944 were needed to take Monte Cassino. Bombers reduced the hilltop monastery to rubble. Infantry assaulted it repeatedly. The Allies suffered 55,000 casualties. Germans lost about 20,000. All of this happened across a 30-km (20-mile) mountain section. Even destroyed structures make effective defensive positions on high terrain.

2022-2025: Modern Warfare Faces Old Constraints

Ukraine’s war has followed similar patterns. Russian advances get described as “slow, limited and highly costly.” Small groups probe for weak points instead of launching massive assaults. Drones watch areas 15-30 km (9-19 miles) from frontlines, making movement hazardous. Guided weapons strike deep targets. Defensive technology keeps evolving alongside offensive capabilities, just like machine guns did in WWI.

Weapons became dramatically more powerful from medieval swords to WWI rifles to modern drones. Some basics haven’t changed, though. Terrain dictates where attacks happen. Logistics determine how far you can push before supplies run out. Defenders with prepared positions hold advantages. That 1944 German propaganda map tried discouraging Allied troops but captured something about warfare’s constraints that persist across centuries.

Territorial changes in Israel and Palestine since 1920 have been a central aspect of the Israeli-Arab conflict, characterized by a complex history of shifting borders, disputes, and competing claims. The early part of the 20th century saw significant changes in the region, leading to the establishment of the modern state of Israel and the ongoing challenges in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In the aftermath of World War I, the League of Nations granted Britain a mandate over the territory known as Palestine. During this period, Jewish immigration to Palestine increased as part of the Zionist movement, which aimed to establish a Jewish homeland. Tensions between Jewish and Arab communities grew, resulting in periodic violence and clashes.

The United Nations proposed a partition plan in 1947 to create separate Jewish and Arab states, but it was rejected by Arab leaders, leading to a war in 1948. After the war, Israel declared independence and expanded its territory beyond the borders proposed in the partition plan. The neighboring Arab states also captured territories. The armistice lines established after this conflict left Israel in control of a significant portion of land, including the western part of Jerusalem.

In 1967, the Six-Day War resulted in further territorial changes. Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, and the Golan Heights from Syria. These gains expanded Israeli control and created a more complex situation regarding Palestinian and Arab land.

Efforts to resolve the conflict and define borders have taken place over the years, notably through the Oslo Accords in the 1990s. These agreements led to the establishment of the Palestinian Authority and a division of the West Bank into areas controlled by Israel and areas administered by the Palestinian Authority. However, final status agreements, including border delineations, have not been reached, leading to ongoing disputes and clashes.

The atlas of tiny maps below, created by Reddit user Drion, illustrates the primary stages of territorial change in Israel and Palestine.

Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank has been a contentious issue, as it affects the potential borders of a future Palestinian state. The status of Jerusalem remains a focal point of conflict, with both Israelis and Palestinians claiming it as their capital.

During World War II, it was assumed by many army strategists of air power that essential winnings could be achieved by bombing industrial and political infrastructure rather than solely military targets.

According to the University of Exeter, Germany dropped 74,172 tons of ordnance on the UK in Second World War, approximately 4/5 of it in 1940-41 and a further 1/8 in the V-weapon attack of 1944. The Allied bombing the attack, gathering force later in the war than Germany’s, at a higher level of technological progress and with far greater industrial power behind it, did ‘better.’

According to the United States Strategic Bombing Survey, the Allies dropped 2.7 million tons of bombs on continental Europe. Half this total went to Germany, 21.8% to France, and 13.7% to Italy, the remaining 14.2% being partitioned between Austria, Hungary, the Balkans, Belgium, Scandinavia, and the Low Countries. The Royal Air Force did 45.8% of the Allies’ bombing, the United States Air Forces 54.2%. Bombs killed 61 thousand British civilians. In Germany, an estimated 420 thousand civilians died in air attacks; in France and Italy, some 60 thousand each.

On September 12, 1939, Ireland declared neutrality. Ireland told Britain not to send over any ships, submarines, or aircraft and informed Germany of Irish neutrality. Churchill was enraged by this declaration and never forgave the Irish.

Despite Irish efforts to spell out “EIRE” to deter German bombing, Dublin was hit on May 31, 1941. As a result of the bombing, 27 people died, 325 homes destroyed or heavily damage.

Irish army was divided into two parts. One half of the army was facing Northern Ireland to oppose an overland British invasion. The other half of the army was in the south to oppose a German landing.

Below is a satirical map of neutral Ireland from 1941, meant to warn off potential invaders, published in the Irish satirical magazine “Dublin Opinion” in August 1940.

Ireland remained neutral during the Second World War, although a minority favored fighting against the Axis powers. Irish authorities did not discourage civilians from going to serve in Britain and did not stop desertion from the Irish military. 4,000-7,000 Irish military personnel deserted to serve with British. 10,000 thousand Irish died in World War II.

In 1942, the Imperial Japanese Navy reached its zenith in terms of naval dominance during World War II. This period was marked by a series of sweeping victories across the Pacific, expanding the boundaries of Japanese-controlled waters to an unprecedented extent. The stunning success of Japanese forces during the early stages of the war saw the capture of strategic territories, including the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, and numerous islands in the Pacific.

The crowning achievement came with the Battle of Midway in June 1942, where the Japanese sought to solidify their control over the central Pacific. However, the tide began to turn as the United States dealt a decisive blow, sinking several key Japanese carriers and halting the expansion of their naval dominance.

Despite this setback, the Japanese naval dominance in 1942 was characterized by an extensive network of controlled territories, establishing a formidable presence across the Pacific and Southeast Asia. The success of the Japanese Navy during this period, coupled with their earlier victories, marked a high point in their quest for regional supremacy, albeit one that would face increasing challenges in the subsequent years of the war.

The globe below shows the greatest extent of Japanese naval dominance in 1942.

By 1920, the Japanese Navy was the third largest navy in the world, behind the Royal Navy and the U.S. Navy.

During the early stages of World War II, particularly from 1940 to 1942, the Imperial Japanese Navy was indeed one of the most powerful naval forces in the world.

Imperial Japanese Navy vs U.S. Navy shipbuilding
1937: 45,000 vs 75,000
1938: 40,000 vs 80,000
1939: 35,000 vs 70,000
1940: 50,000 vs 50,000
1941: 180,000 vs 130,000
1942–1945: 550,000 vs 3,200,000

Operation Barbarossa was the invasion of the USSR by Nazi Germany and many of its Axis allies, starting on Sunday, 22 June 1941, during World War II. The military operation, codenamed after Frederick Barbarossa (“red beard”), a 12th-century Holy Roman emperor and German king, put into activity Nazi Germany’s ideological goal of occupying the western USSR to repopulate it with Germans. The German General plan Ost intended to use some of the conquered people as a workforce for the Axis war effort while getting the oil reserves of the Caucasus and the agricultural resources of different Soviet lands. Their foremost goal was to create more Lebensraum (living space) for The Third Reich and eventually eradicate the indigenous Slavic peoples by mass exile to Siberia, Germanisation, enslavement, and genocide.

The Nazi High Command began the attack on the USSR in July 1940. Throughout the operation, over 3.8 million personnel of the Axis powers – the most significant invasion force in the history of warfare – invaded the western part of the USSR along a 2.9 thousand kilometers (1.8 thousand miles) front, with 600 thousand vehicles and over 600 thousand horses for non-combat activities.

The military operation opened up the Eastern Front, in which more forces were carried out than in any other theater of war conflict in human history. Eastern Europe saw some of history’s most significant combats, most horrible atrocities, and highest losses, all of which affected the course of WWII and the consecutive history of the 20th century. The German armies eventually captured some five million Soviet Red Army troops. The Nazis purposely starved to death or murdered 3.3 million Soviet prisoners of war, and millions of citizens, as the “Hunger Plan” carried out to solve German food deficiencies and eliminate the Slavic population through a famine. Mass shootings and gassing actions, carried out by the Nazis and volitional collaborators, massacred over a million Soviet Jews as part of the Holocaust.

Below is the map of operation Barbarossa superimposed onto the territory of the United States.

This map is shown the vastness of the war effort of our Soviet Allies. The map of the western half of the Soviet Union has been placed (in reverse) upon the map of the United States. The shadings show:

Brown color: A map of that part of the Soviet Union occupied by the Nazis at the peak of the invasion. (The map of the Soviet Union is reversed to compare the industrial west of Russia with the similar eastern area of the United States.)
Yellow color: Giant industrial and agricultural communities moved from invaded regions . . . equivalent to a transfer of the mills and factories of all eastern America to the Rockies.

Soviet cities are in only approximately correct relation to each other, the object being to show their relation to comparable American cities.

“Russian War Relief. Inc., 1lE. 35th St., New York City, presents this map to help Americans to visualize the almost inconceivable extent of the need for American aid to the people of the Soviet Linton, from the vast invaded area of the USSR, here shown superimposed on a map of the United States, 38,000,000 Russians escaped the Nazis in 1941 by fleeing their homes- Strafed by dive bombers and machine-gunning “hedge-hoppers” they fled across their country before the invaders while their Red Army fought and fell bock-fought and fell back. Regarding the map of America, 38,000,000 persons walked and rode across more than half of the United States. They left behind them – besides their homes – the lands which fed them, the mines which fed their factories, their clothing, their hospitals, their schools, their nurseries – in short, their lives. In the land to which they went, there were almost none of these things. They built new factories first, ploughed the land second. Now they are building new homes. But- even as we would be – they are often cold, hungry, and physically exhausted. They need help. But the fate of those who escaped is not the worst fate in Russia. Forty million of the residents of the invaded area did not escape! They stayed. From forest hideouts, they have seen the Nazis burn their homes and truck away from food stores, clothing, and even household equipment. Some, staying in their homes to meet the invaders, have been robbed of all they owned … and many have been killed. Some survivors are now returning to homes recaptured by the Red Army. They return to almost utter desolation They, too, need help. Ten million of our Soviet allies will never return home. Ten million have died in the fight that is theirs and ours. The Red Army has lost almost as many men, in killed and wounded, as are now in all the American armed forces’ Civilians have died – by millions – of malnutrition, cold, exhaustion disease – and of the Nazi hangman s noose and the bullets of Nazi firing squads Hundreds of thousands of Soviet homes ore sheltering the war’s orphans. Look at the map. Imagine the tragedy to you and your family if an invader had ravaged America throughout all that shocked territory on our Atlantic seaboard, westward all the way to St Louis and Tulsa, because the equivalent of that tragedy has happened to millions of our Soviet allies, Russian War Relief Inc., asks oil Americans to help keep relief ships sailing.”

The numbers are staggering – approximately 40 million casualties in World War I, including up to 20 million deaths and 21 million wounded. But these figures, while overwhelming, can feel abstract. Through these carefully selected maps, we can better understand the profound impact this conflict had on nations and their people.

Let’s start with the raw numbers. The Russian Empire suffered the highest absolute losses, with up to 3.4 million deaths. However, when we look at the percentage of population lost, a different picture emerges. Serbia endured the war’s heaviest relative toll, losing between 16.67% and 27.78% of its population – the highest proportional loss of any nation in the conflict.

Reddit user: Krizerion

The mobilization efforts were unprecedented. In France, nearly 80% of men aged 15-49 were conscripted into military service. According to military historian David Stevenson, this level of mobilization had never been seen before in human history and wouldn’t be matched until World War II.

Source: www.historynutshell.com

Some of the most striking statistics come from the smaller nations. Belgium, despite its relatively small size, lost up to 144,337 people. New Zealand, half a world away from the conflict, saw nearly 18,000 of its citizens perish – a staggering 1.64% of its population.

The world maps below show countries by the number of deaths and casualties as a percentage of the population in World War I.

World countries by the number of deaths in WW1

The war’s aftermath brought new challenges. As armies moved across Europe, they disrupted farming and food distribution networks. This, combined with naval blockades and poor harvests, led to severe food shortages across the continent.

Reddit user: From_The_Sun

According to the International Committee of the Red Cross archives, by 1918, the average citizen in Vienna was surviving on just 1,000 calories per day – less than half the recommended intake. In Germany, the food situation was so dire that the period became known as the “Turnip Winter,” as turnips often replaced potatoes and bread as dietary staples.
