Remember that not that long ago (175 years) In 1848 it was  4 925 283 km². Bigger than the whole Continental US + Argentina + El salvador + Honduras + and still you have almost 3000 mi2 left to aply

Alaska: 1,717,856 km2

Just about one Wyoming shy (Wyoming: 253,600 km2)
