Antarctica’s Soviet Vostok base experienced the coldest temperatures ever recorded on Earth in 1983, according to the World Meteorological Organization. The Vostok station, which runs on approximately 3.7 kilometers (2.3 miles) of ice, is among the most isolated research stations globally. It is difficult to believe that this desert, covered in snow, experienced an extreme temperature drop of -89.2°C (-128.6°F), which is 30 degrees colder than the next lowest recorded temperature.
