In 1603, Japan stood at the edge of a new era. The map created by Reddit user gabsdebrito beautifully captures this pivotal moment, showing the Mon (family crests) of the major clans at the start of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

The map reveals a fragmented Japan—a patchwork of colorful territories, each marked with the distinct Mon of the ruling clan. This map doesn’t just show geography—it reflects the power struggles and shifting alliances that shaped Japan as it moved from chaos to stability.

Fragmented Japan: The Era of Warring States (Sengoku Period)

Before the Tokugawa Shogunate, Japan was not a unified state. From the mid-15th century until the early 17th century, Japan was caught in the chaos of the Sengoku Period (1467–1600)—a time of nearly constant civil war and political instability.

Political authority had collapsed under the weakened Ashikaga Shogunate, leaving powerful daimyō (feudal lords) to govern their territories independently. The emperor retained symbolic authority, but real power lay with the daimyō, who controlled private armies of samurai and built extensive networks of fortified castles.

It was a time when might determined survival. Clans formed strategic alliances through marriage and trade, but those bonds were fragile. Betrayal was as common as loyalty. The map reflects this fragmented landscape, with the borders of each territory shifting frequently as clans fought for dominance.

The Rise of the Tokugawa Shogunate

Unifying such a fractured country seemed almost impossible—but three powerful leaders changed Japan’s trajectory:

Oda Nobunaga (1534–1582)

Nobunaga began the process of unification through ruthless military campaigns. He seized control of Kyoto (the imperial capital) and introduced innovative military tactics, including the use of firearms. His dominance was cut short when he was assassinated by one of his generals in 1582.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537–1598)

Hideyoshi, a former peasant who rose through the ranks, avenged Nobunaga’s death and succeeded in unifying most of Japan. He disarmed the peasantry and restricted the use of swords to the samurai class, establishing a more centralized power structure. However, Hideyoshi’s death in 1598 left a dangerous power vacuum.

Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543–1616)

Ieyasu filled that vacuum. His decisive victory at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 secured his dominance over Japan. In 1603, the emperor appointed him Shōgun (military ruler), marking the beginning of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Ieyasu centralized power in Edo (modern Tokyo) and introduced a strict political order. The system of Sankin-kōtai (alternate attendance) required daimyō to spend every other year in Edo, keeping them under tight control and reducing the likelihood of rebellion. This system ensured peace and stability for over 260 years (1603–1868).

The Clans of 1603

The map above shows the political landscape at the dawn of Tokugawa rule. Here are some of the major clans depicted:

Tokugawa Clan – Based in Edo (modern Tokyo), the Tokugawa family maintained firm control over political and military power.

Date Clan – Based in the north, the Date were known for their fierce samurai traditions and strategic alliances.

Maeda Clan – One of the wealthiest and most influential clans, loyal to the Tokugawa. Their territory included Kaga Province (modern Ishikawa and Toyama).

Shimazu Clan – Based in Satsuma (modern Kagoshima), they were known for their naval strength and independent spirit.

Mori Clan – Located in western Honshu, the Mori had been rivals to the Tokugawa but retained some autonomy after the Battle of Sekigahara.

Uesugi Clan – Based in the north, the Uesugi had a long history of military skill and political influence.

The Mon on the map symbolize each clan’s heritage, power, and loyalty. Some of these clans would maintain influence during the Tokugawa period, while others would fade into history.

What If Japan Hadn’t Unified?

Had Tokugawa Ieyasu lost at Sekigahara, Japan could have remained fragmented for much longer. European powers—including the Portuguese, Dutch, and Spanish—were already establishing footholds in Asia. A divided Japan might have faced colonization or foreign influence, similar to parts of China and Southeast Asia.

Instead, Ieyasu’s victory ensured that Japan remained culturally and politically distinct. The Tokugawa Shogunate introduced Sakoku (closed-country policy) in 1639, restricting foreign trade to a single port in Nagasaki. This isolation preserved Japan’s cultural identity but also slowed its technological and economic development compared to Western nations.

Legacy of the Tokugawa Era

The Tokugawa period shaped modern Japan in profound ways:

A rigid social order was established, with samurai, farmers, artisans, and merchants locked into hereditary roles.

Political stability allowed for economic growth, particularly in Edo, Osaka, and Kyoto.

Cultural developments flourished, including ukiyo-e woodblock prints, haiku poetry, and kabuki theater.

The eventual opening of Japan in the 19th century under the Meiji Restoration dramatically altered Japan’s trajectory toward modernization.

The map of Japan in 1603 is more than just a historical artifact—it’s a glimpse into the political and military forces that shaped Japan’s future. It captures the moment when centuries of warfare gave way to peace under the Tokugawa.

Japan is a unitary nation. The primary government delegates multiple functions (such as education, health care, transport system, police force) to the prefectures and municipalities but maintains the overall right to control them.

Japan is split into 47 prefectures, making the nation’s first level of administrative and jurisdiction division. They include 43 usual prefectures, two urban prefectures (Osaka and Kyoto), one “territory” (Hokkaido), and one “metropolis” (Tokyo). The first prefectures were formed in 1868 to substitute the urban and rural administrators in the country’s parts before managed directly by the shogunate. In many waves of territorial consolidation, currents 47 prefectures were created by the turn of the century.

For Akira fans, this map puts Neo-Tokyo's big artificial islands right next to real Tokyo Bay from 2019. It points out land that's been built up since 1988, and compares things like area, people, skyscrapers, and the day-to-day mess in the film versus the real place.

If you’ve watched Akira, it’s probably that 1988 anime that got you or your friends hooked on cyberpunk. The main bit is these teens on bikes zooming around a new Tokyo built after a massive blast wipes out the old one, and it sets up like the spark for another world war.

The image here has the map of Neo-Tokyo up top and a Google map of real Tokyo Bay down below, done by Univero on the Akira wiki. It sets the fictional version right next to the actual 2019 one, which makes it straightforward to spot what the film caught about Tokyo’s general mood and where it branched out differently. Both show the bay pushed further with filled-in land, hooked up to the mainland via bridges and tunnels.

Let me break down some comparisons:

Aspect

Neo-Tokyo (from Akira)

Real Tokyo (2019)

Bay Layout

Thrown up on a massive artificial island in the bay’s middle after the 1988 wipeout, plus dozens of smaller ones tied together with highways and tunnels; right by the leftovers of old Tokyo, with a shadowy, empty spot to the northwest.

Shores reshaped with added land going back to the 1600s, but nothing like a huge central island; things like the Central Breakwater and Tokyo Gate Bridge on the northwest and west sides showed up after the movie hit theaters.

City Size & People

Spans 410 square kilometers (158 square miles) with around 2.1 million residents, squeezed in at over 5,000 per square kilometer (about 13,000 per square mile); has that feel of growth mixed with things starting to unravel.

The metropolis proper holds 14 million people, and the bigger area pushes 38 million; tighter in some parts but overall more balanced spread.

Buildings & Skyline

Huge towers topping 1 kilometer (3,280 feet), like that military hospital; pulls from 1980s neon signs and builds, but with a rough, worn look.

Loads of fresh high-rises since the 2010s, reaching up to 400 meters (1,312 feet) in spots soon; the Tokyo Skytree stands at 634 meters (2,080 feet), and old-school neon has mostly given way to big screens.

Daily Life & Issues

Crime clocks in at 42,000 cases yearly, with ongoing rallies, street clashes involving biker groups like the ones in the story; manages 11,500 metric tons (12,677 short tons) of trash daily through a sewer setup running 309 kilometers (192 miles).

Among the safest major spots globally with minimal crime; solid services, kept-up roads, and serious planning for quakes and such.

Olympics Tie-In

The stadium gets built wrapped up in hidden tests and folks pushing back hard – that whole “scrap the Olympics” mood.

The real 2020 event (pushed to 2021) added new spots and better transport; complaints about spending, sure, but no wild plots.

Overall Feel

Heavy industry with shady deals, troops everywhere, and a sense that it’s all hanging by a thread.

Runs like clockwork with rules in place, excellent trains, parks mixed in, and emphasis on keeping it all steady.

Plenty overlaps: the packed-in feel, stacked highways, and constant hum nail Tokyo’s spirit, especially that buildup to the Games in both. Scenes with bikes and after-dark hangs mirror actual youth hangs, just without the heavy fights. Then again, the film cranks up the mess and adds wild elements like mind-power research, while today’s Tokyo sticks to everyday advances like quick transit and automated shops.

Japan first became known to Europeans through the account of Marco Polo at the close of the thirteenth century. Marco Polo had never been to Japan, but he had his information from the Great Khan.

Japan continued to be a mysterious country for Europeans. First Europeans who visited Japan in 1543 were Portuguese traders António da Mota and Francisco Zeimoto, who wanted to introduce hand-held guns for trade. But to their surprise, it turned out that the Japanese had already been using firearms 270 years before the first arrival of the Portuguese. This technology came to Japan from China.

From this point in time, more or less precise geographical descriptions of this country appear, and Japan has become more and more attractive to Westerners. This interest has not even subsided in the twenty-first century.

Below is an early masterpiece of Richard Edes’s presentation of Japan. TIME Fortune weekly magazine published these five thematic maps of Japan in 1936.

I – Japan is Coal and Iron
… as well as the lack of coal, iron, oil, rubber, and other industrial raw material is represented graphically in the lower left-hand corner opposite.

II – Japan is the Japanese
… the density of whose settlement upon arable land is 390 per square mile heavier than that of the Netherlands, the next most densely settled of great powers.

III – Japan is Land to Till
… of which there is only 15 percent of the total area here, represented by the green of rice paddies, mulberry plantations, and wheat fields.

IV – Japan is Six Cities
… of over half a million population and forty-two other cities above 75,000 and the railroads, shipping lines, and airlines connecting them.

V – Japan is Rock and Metal
… and the rock is the excellent backbone massive of the country, and the metal stabs in by brittle nerves of rail and wire from three great industrial centers on the coast.

The bond between humans and dogs in Japan is as old as the nation itself. Archaeological findings reveal that even in the Jōmon period (c. 14,500–c. 500 BCE), dogs were buried with the same reverence as humans, highlighting their esteemed status in early Japanese society. This deep-rooted connection has only grown stronger over time, with dogs featuring prominently in Japanese art, literature, and daily life.

During the Heian period (794–1185 CE), literary works depicted dogs roaming freely among courtiers in the ancient capital of Heian-kyō, now known as Kyoto. Fast forward to the Edo period (1603–1868 CE), and we find dogs immortalized in paintings by master artists, while tales featuring anthropomorphized canines captured the public’s imagination.

Intriguingly, dogs played a role in samurai training through a sport called inuoumono, or “dog hunting events,” which persisted until the late 1800s. This practice, while controversial by today’s standards, underscores the multifaceted relationship between humans and dogs in Japanese history.

Let’s take a closer look at some of Japan’s most notable dog breeds:

Hokkaido Ken

Hailing from Japan’s northernmost island, the Hokkaido Ken is a medium-sized breed known for its loyalty and resilience. These dogs were originally bred for hunting large game-like bears and have a thick double coat that protects them from harsh winter conditions.

Shiba-Inu

Perhaps the most internationally recognized Japanese breed, the Shiba Inu is a small, fox-like dog with a big personality. Known for their confidence and independence, Shibas have become internet sensations, spawning countless memes and even inspiring the popular Dogecoin cryptocurrency.

Akita Inu

The Akita is a large, powerful breed that symbolizes loyalty and good health in Japan. These dogs gained international fame through the story of Hachiko, an Akita who waited for his deceased owner at a train station for nine years. The breed’s unwavering loyalty has made it a cultural icon, with statues and annual ceremonies honoring Hachiko’s memory.

Tosa Inu

Often called the “sumo wrestler” of the dog world, the Tosa Inu is a massive breed developed for dogfighting in the 19th century. Today, they’re known for their calm demeanor and protective nature, making them excellent guardians when properly trained and socialized.

Kai Ken

The Kai Ken is one of the rarest Japanese breeds, prized for its striking brindle coat and keen hunting abilities. These medium-sized dogs are intelligent and adaptable, equally at home in the mountains or as loyal family companions.

Kishu Ken

Originally bred for boar and deer hunting, the Kishu Ken is a medium-sized dog known for its silent hunting style. These dogs are loyal and docile with their families but can be reserved with strangers, reflecting their ancient hunting instincts.

Shikoku Inu

Named after the island of Shikoku, this breed is sometimes called the “Kochi Ken” after its prefecture of origin. The Shikoku Inu is an agile, alert dog that was traditionally used for hunting boar in mountainous terrain. They’re known for their tenacity and strong prey drive.

While breeds like the Shiba Inu and Akita have gained popularity worldwide, many Japanese breeds remain rare outside their homeland. This scarcity has led to increased efforts to preserve these unique canines. The Akita in particular has become a symbol of Japanese culture, with the Japanese government even gifting Akita puppies to international dignitaries as a gesture of friendship.

Interestingly, the influence of Japanese dog breeds extends beyond the realm of pets and into popular culture. The distinctive appearance of breeds like the Shiba Inu has inspired characters in anime and manga, further cementing their place in Japan’s cultural landscape. For example, the popular anime series “Ginga: Nagareboshi Gin” features an Akita as its protagonist, introducing these noble dogs to audiences worldwide.

The preservation of Japanese dog breeds is not just a matter of maintaining genetic diversity; it’s about protecting a living piece of Japan’s cultural heritage. Organizations like the Nihon Ken Hozonkai (NIPPO) work tirelessly to maintain breed standards and promote these dogs both within Japan and internationally.

The late 1930s marked a crucial turning point in East Asian history, as three major powers vied for control over the region’s vast territories and resources. This remarkable 1937 map offers a window into this complex political landscape, capturing the mounting tensions that would soon explode into full-scale war.

Looking at this detailed map, we see three main powers dominating the East Asian landscape: the USSR (marked in red), Japan (in yellow), and China (in purple). The Soviet sphere of influence, shown in lighter red, extends well beyond its borders into Mongolia and Qinghai – a fact that greatly concerned both Japanese and Chinese leadership at the time. Japanese influence, depicted in lighter yellow, encompasses Manchuria, a region they had controlled since the Mukden Incident of 1931. According to historian Rana Mitter’s “Forgotten Ally: China’s World War II” (Amazon link), this territorial acquisition marked Japan’s first major step toward its broader East Asian ambitions.

Within China’s borders, we see a nation torn by civil conflict. The map illustrates this internal struggle through an ingenious use of military symbols – blue figures representing Kuomintang government forces and red figures showing Communist positions. What’s particularly striking is the strategic positioning: Communist forces occupy much of the Chinese heartland, while Kuomintang troops concentrate along the borders, presumably to counter potential Soviet advances. This unusual deployment pattern, as noted by Hans van de Ven in “War and Nationalism in China” (Amazon link), reflected the complex balancing act the Kuomintang faced, fighting communists internally while defending against external threats.

The Soviet military presence appears particularly threatening on this map. Their strategy, outlined in red, shows a horseshoe formation: land forces poised to enter northern China through Mongolia, while other armies stand ready to engage Japanese forces in Manchuria. Perhaps most ominously, the map indicates potential air strikes against the Japanese mainland from the Soviet base at Vladivostok – a threat that Japanese military planners took very seriously, according to David Glantz’s “Soviet Strategic Offensive in Manchuria, 1945” (Amazon link).

One of the map’s most revealing aspects is its detailed portrayal of regional resources. Through carefully placed vignettes, it shows the distribution of valuable assets: oil rigs, coal mines, livestock areas, and deposits of gold and copper. Interestingly, hemp plants are marked across Manchuria, China, and northern Luzon – at the time, hemp was primarily valued for industrial applications like rope and textile production. The contrast between resource-rich Korea, Manchuria, and China versus the relatively resource-poor Soviet territories helps explain why these regions became focal points of competition.

The map includes a smaller world map in the lower left corner, using a Japan-centered Mercator projection. This inset provides global context, with colonial powers color-coded: orange for British territories, red for Japanese holdings, brown for Italian possessions, and light red for Soviet regions. This global perspective reminds us that the East Asian situation was part of a broader pattern of international rivalry and colonial ambition.

For modern readers interested in understanding today’s East Asian geopolitics, this historical map offers valuable insights into patterns of regional competition that continue to influence international relations. Current high-quality maps of Asia are available through these Amazon links:

In 1942, the Imperial Japanese Navy reached its zenith in terms of naval dominance during World War II. This period was marked by a series of sweeping victories across the Pacific, expanding the boundaries of Japanese-controlled waters to an unprecedented extent. The stunning success of Japanese forces during the early stages of the war saw the capture of strategic territories, including the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, and numerous islands in the Pacific.

The crowning achievement came with the Battle of Midway in June 1942, where the Japanese sought to solidify their control over the central Pacific. However, the tide began to turn as the United States dealt a decisive blow, sinking several key Japanese carriers and halting the expansion of their naval dominance.

Despite this setback, the Japanese naval dominance in 1942 was characterized by an extensive network of controlled territories, establishing a formidable presence across the Pacific and Southeast Asia. The success of the Japanese Navy during this period, coupled with their earlier victories, marked a high point in their quest for regional supremacy, albeit one that would face increasing challenges in the subsequent years of the war.

The globe below shows the greatest extent of Japanese naval dominance in 1942.

By 1920, the Japanese Navy was the third largest navy in the world, behind the Royal Navy and the U.S. Navy.

During the early stages of World War II, particularly from 1940 to 1942, the Imperial Japanese Navy was indeed one of the most powerful naval forces in the world.

Maps tell us more than just geography—they reveal how people see the world. Early Japanese maps of the world are no exception. They blend art with geography, often prioritizing symbolism and storytelling over precise accuracy. From Edo-period depictions to industrial and political maps of the 20th century, these maps offer a rare perspective on how Japan viewed itself and the rest of the world. Let’s take a closer look at some of these remarkable examples.

Japanese World Map (1850)

This 1850 map reflects the Edo period’s blend of isolation and curiosity about the outside world. Japan had limited contact with foreign nations, and much of its global knowledge came from Dutch traders. The result? A map that combines traditional Japanese artistic styles with second-hand geographic information. Continents are depicted with exaggerated features, and some regions are misrepresented due to the lack of direct exploration.

Chikyu bankoku sankai yochi zenzu, Sekisui Cho Harutaka

Japanese map of the world (1853)

Created during a time when Japan was beginning to open up to foreign influence, this map reflects an increased awareness of global geography. While still maintaining traditional Japanese cartographic elements, there is a noticeable improvement in the accuracy of continental shapes and relative positions. Nevertheless, certain distortions persist, indicative of the transitional phase in Japanese cartography as it assimilated Western techniques.

Japanese Pictorial Map (1932)

This pictorial map from 1932 is a vibrant illustration of Japan’s perspective on the world during the early 20th century. Rich in detail, it showcases various countries with illustrations highlighting cultural and industrial aspects. While the map provides a more accurate geographical representation compared to earlier versions, it emphasizes thematic elements over precise scale and projection. This approach reflects the map’s purpose as both an educational tool and a piece of art.

Japanese world map showing the industries of different countries (1933)

Unlike traditional geographic maps, this 1933 Japanese world map takes a thematic approach, highlighting the industrial and economic strengths of different nations. Rather than striving for perfect geographic accuracy, the mapmakers focused on visually representing global industries, transportation networks, and naval power.

Each country is illustrated with symbols and icons representing its key industries—factories, agricultural products, ships, and infrastructure—giving viewers a comparative snapshot of the world’s economic landscape at the time. The map also features data visualizations, including bar charts and proportional diagrams, reinforcing the industrial and military comparisons between nations.

By 1933, Japan’s cartography had advanced significantly, incorporating more precise geographic projections. However, in this case, accuracy was not the main goal. Instead, the map serves as an economic infographic, emphasizing Japan’s perspective on global power dynamics in the early 20th century. It’s a fascinating artifact, reflecting not just data but also the economic ambitions and worldview of Japan at the time.

Japanese Pictorial map of China and Japan-Soviet relations (1937)

This 1937 Japanese pictorial map offers a striking visual representation of the geopolitical tensions between Japan, China, and the Soviet Union. Rich with symbolism, it blends cartography with propaganda, shaping how viewers perceive regional power dynamics.

Unlike conventional maps, this one is not strictly about geographic accuracy. Instead, it distorts and emphasizes certain areas to highlight Japan’s political and military interests. Illustrated figures, military assets, and key infrastructure mark strategic locations, reinforcing the narrative of a looming conflict.

Maps like this were powerful tools of their time, shaping public perception and national identity. They remind us that cartography is not just about representing places—it can also serve as a medium for storytelling, persuasion, and even ideological influence.

Features and Challenges in Japanese Cartography

Traditional Japanese maps were diverse in style and purpose, often oriented towards pragmatic use rather than purely decorative purposes. They frequently incorporated text and images seamlessly, reflecting a holistic approach to information presentation. However, Japanese mapmakers faced significant challenges, particularly during periods of limited external contact. The lack of accurate information about distant lands led to distortions and inaccuracies. Additionally, traditional mapping techniques did not always align with Western conventions of scale and projection, resulting in unique but less geographically accurate representations.

The integration of Western cartographic techniques in the late 19th and early 20th centuries led to improvements in accuracy. However, the transition was gradual, and earlier maps often reflect a blend of traditional Japanese and Western styles, each with its own set of distortions and emphases.

Exploring these historical maps offers valuable insights into Japan’s evolving worldview and the broader history of cartography. They serve as cultural artifacts that encapsulate the knowledge, artistic expression, and geopolitical perspectives of their time.

Japan’s business world is a really interesting mix of innovation, tradition and specialisation by region. A map created by Reddit user ronnierocket visually illustrates this by plotting the top Japanese brands from their respective headquarters locations.

The map indicates a strong cluster of leading brands in Tokyo, the capital and economic hub of Japan. There are Toyota, Sony, and Uniqlo, among other companies, all with headquarters here, leveraging the city’s infrastructure, talent base, and connectivity to the world.

Beyond Tokyo, other regions also have dominant brands. Kyoto has Nintendo, for instance, implying the city’s blend of antique and modern environments. Osaka protects Panasonic, indicative of the industrial heritage of the Kansai region.

A confluence of historical influences, economic policies, and cultural values shapes the Japanese brand environment. In both domestic and foreign markets, a strong foundation for Japanese brands loyalty has been provided by an emphasis on quality, accuracy, and customer satisfaction. Businesses in a variety of industries have benefited from government support for infrastructure development and technology advancement.

The presence of manufacturing giants in regions like Kansai and Chubu mirrors historical industrial zones, while the concentration of tech and service corporations in Tokyo aligns with the city’s transition into a global business hub. This geographical distribution underscores the interplay between Japan’s rich and unique cultural heritage and its modern economic strategies.
