About These Units

Metric weights (kilograms, grams, milligrams, metric tons) are used worldwide for most purposes. The kilogram is the base unit – everything else scales from it. Grams for cooking and small items, milligrams for medication, metric tons for shipping.

Imperial weights (pounds, ounces) dominate in the US. A pound equals about 0.454 kg. The UK uses a mix – pounds for some things, kilograms for others.

Stones (14 pounds each) are uniquely British and Irish, primarily for body weight. If someone says they weigh “11 stone,” that’s 154 pounds or about 70 kg.

Carats (0.2 grams) measure gemstones. The name comes from carob seeds, which were used as counterweights on ancient scales because they’re remarkably uniform in weight.
