The Best Editions of Monopoly Board Game

A classic Monopoly board is a map first. The streets, from Baltic Avenue up to Park Place, come directly from the Atlantic City area in New Jersey. One property never even existed under that name. Marvin Gardens, in the yellow group, is a misspelling of Marven Gardens, an actual housing community located entirely within Margate City, just south of Atlantic City. Parker Brothers formally apologized to the residents of Margate City decades later in 1995, but the board itself was never corrected.

The game’s origin is stranger still. Lizzie Magie patented The Landlord’s Game in 1904, designed to show how concentrated property ownership drove inequality. Charles Darrow later modified a version of the game that had been passed down through local communities, patented it under his own name in 1935, and sold it to Parker Brothers that same year. Monopoly joined the National Toy Hall of Fame in 1998, and it has been reissued, redrawn, and reinvented dozens of times since.

Monopoly Game, Token Vote Edition

This is the standard Monopoly set sold today. Its eight tokens are the top hat, rubber duck, Scottie dog, cat, race car, penguin, battleship, and thimble. Two of those, the rubber duck and penguin, only entered the lineup after Hasbro’s 2017 Token Madness vote, when more than 4.3 million people picked new pieces from a pool of 64 options. The box measures 10.51 x 15.75 x 0.1 inches (26.7 x 40 x 0.25 cm).

Monopoly Classic with Storage Tray and Larger Tokens

A second current release swaps in a banker’s storage tray and larger metal tokens, useful if the paper money and small pieces from older boxes tend to end up scattered across the floor. The token set matches the first box, just sized up. A card for tracking family game wins is included too, and the packaging is smaller than older classic boxes for easier shelf storage.

Monopoly Disney The Lion King Edition

This edition timed to the film’s 25th anniversary and the release of the CGI remake that same year. Its six tokens cover Timon, Simba, Nala, Mufasa, Pumbaa, and Scar. Destiny cards take over for Chance and Community Chest, and Pride Rock itself holds the deck and plays a short music cue whenever a player draws from it.

This set follows Elphaba and Glinda through Oz, with properties running from Shiz University to Emerald City. Houses and hotels become Munchkin Homes and Emerald Castles. The six gold toned tokens include Elphaba’s hat, her broom, her bottle, Glinda’s crown, her trunks, and the spellbook called the Grimmerie, and a deck of Defy Gravity cards swaps in for Chance and Community Chest.

Monopoly Star Wars The Mandalorian Edition

This version follows season two of The Mandalorian, with players taking on The Mandalorian, Bo-Katan Kryze, Ahsoka Tano, or Boba Fett. Landing on Grogu’s space lets a player pick up his token and pair his ability with their own character’s. Stormtrooper, Dark Trooper, and Moff Gideon tokens can trigger battles, and if an Imperial enemy captures Grogu before anyone wins, the game ends for every player at once.

Ariel’s world replaces the standard pieces with clamshell currency and Starfish and Conch Shell buildings. Monopoly Black Panther Edition

This is the original 2018 edition tied to the first Black Panther film, built around Wakanda rather than the later Wakanda Forever sequel. Players explore locations including the Warrior Falls Challenge Pool, the Hall of Kings, and the Tribal Council Room, forming alliances as they go. Kimoyo Beads and Heart-shaped Herb cards direct the action in place of Chance and Community Chest, and villages and strongholds replace houses and hotels. Because this is the original 2018 printing and not the newer Wakanda Forever version Hasbro currently sells, it carries a premium price compared to more recent Marvel themed Monopoly sets.
