In 1652, a contingent of Dutch settlers landed in modern South Africa and founded the Cape Colony. It went on to expand greatly under Dutch rule, and continued to do so after being transferred to Britain in 1814. It united with other colonies to for South Africa in 1910, and had gained full independence by 1961.
