– Despite being a party with usually very low voter share, the FDP (liberals) has participated in almost every German government with a considerable amount of minister posts. Its role often was the one of a king maker for CDU chancellors, but also the SPD Schmidt government.
– Though the CSU only exists in Bavaria, many CSU politicians were actually born outside of its borders, exemplifying a nation-wide demographic trend of migration to the booming, prosperous Southern state.
– Northern Germany seems to be home to Social Democrat politicians exponentially so. Generally (former) centres of heavy industry, mining and shipbuilding seem to be producing Social Democrats, while centres of modern service and high tech industries (Munich, Frankfurt, Baden-Württemberg) favour conservative and liberal candidates.
– The Hanseatic cities of Hamburg and Lübeck alone provided three chancellors, including the incumbent Angela Merkel.
– Only two ministers were not member of any party during their tenure. One was Wilhelm Werner Müller as Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy under Schröder I (SPD), the other Hans Leussink as Minister for Education and Research in Brandt I (SPD).
