A flag is a piece of fabric with a specific design, format, and colors. One of the most popular purposes of a flag is to symbolize a country. National flags as patriotic symbols widely vary by interpretations that often include solid military associations because of their initial and ongoing use for that purpose.
Despite the existence of a great variety of flags, some national flags have inspired other countries and subnational entities to design their flags. For instance, the oldest national flag still in use (1478), the flag of Denmark, inspired the cross design of other Nordic nations, such as Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, and many regional Scandinavian flags. The flag of the Netherlands is the oldest tricolor, also used in different variations by many countries.
But despite this, most countries are very respectful about their national flags, and desecrating these symbols may be illegal.
