During the past ten thousand years, there are about 1.5 thousand volcanoes on land that are known to have have been active. The exact number of submarine volcanoes are unknown. At present, there are about six hundred volcanoes that have had known eruptions during recorded history, while about fifty or seventy volcanoes are erupting each year. At any given time, there is an average of about twenty volcanoes that are active.
