Arable land includes land defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization as land under temporary crops, pastures, land under market or kitchen gardens, and land temporarily unused.

Agricultural land covers more than a third (36%) of the world’s land area, with arable land representing less than 1/3 of agricultural land (about 10% of the world’s land area).
The world’s cultivated area has grown by 12% over the last fifty years. The world irrigated area has doubled over the same period. Agriculture already uses 11% of the world’s land area for crop production (more than 1.5 billion ha).
