The ethnic map of Africa is a complex mosaic reflecting the continent’s rich diversity. Africa is home to a vast array of ethnic groups, each with its distinct languages, cultures, and traditions. The distribution of ethnicities is intricately linked to historical migrations, geographical features, and political boundaries.
North Africa, with its Arab and Berber populations, contrasts sharply with Sub-Saharan Africa, characterized by a multitude of ethnicities such as the Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa in West Africa, the Zulu and Xhosa in Southern Africa, and the Maasai and Kikuyu in East Africa. The Horn of Africa exhibits a mix of Afro-Asiatic and Nilotic ethnic groups.
Colonial histories have influenced the demographics, leading to diverse ethnic compositions within countries. While some nations have a relatively homogenous ethnic makeup, others boast a mosaic of ethnicities coexisting within their borders.
Below is the modern ethnic map of Africa.
