This Map Poster Shows All the Metropolitan Areas in the United States

The United States is the third most populated nation globally, with 331 million people who live in 19,502 incorporated cities and towns; of these, 16,410 had a population under 10 thousand while, and only ten cities had one million or more.

The U.S. Census Bureau divides these settlements into metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas.

Below, the U.S. Census Bureau’s gigantic latest map shows 392 metropolitan and 547 micropolitan statistical areas.

Metropolitan Areas have at least one urban core of at least 50 thousand population. The largest population areas are sometimes incorporating many U.S. counties.

Micropolitan Areas are the minor areas marked a lighter shade of green on this map. These areas, placed further away from large centers, have at least one urban core of 10 thousand but less than 50 thousand citizens.
