Cymry – same origin as the Welsh word for Wales – “Cymru”, meaning ‘fellow countrymen’. Before the Anglo-Saxon era and for some time afterwards, Brythonic was spoken across England parts of Scotland as well as Wales. Northern England and Southern Scotland are still referred to in Welsh as “Yr Hen Gogledd” (the old North). Modern county name of Cumbria has same origin.
