Syria in darkness and light

Syria’s electricity infrastructure has been destroyed by six years of war. Images from NASA show precisely how the lights have gone out during the course of the war, leaving people to survive with little to no power.
These images reveal how the lights have gone out in Aleppo, Syria’s 2nd city over five years.
Syria before and after the civil war
Images below are drawn from a global composite that was made by selecting the best cloud-free nights each month over each landmass on Earth. The data come from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the NASA-NOAA Suomi NPP satellite. VIIRS includes a particular “day/night band,” a low-light sensor that makes quantitative estimations of light emissions and reflections, allowing researchers to detect the intensity, types, and sources of night lights and to see how they change over several years.

A lot of the areas in Syria already have been rebuilt or are getting repaired right now (Kurdish regions), so the 2019 map may look different.
This is fascinating.
