Four maps breaking down the 2024 election by education and gender show how dramatically voting patterns differ across America. College-educated women favored Harris 61-37%, while college-educated men split more evenly at 51-47% for Harris. Non-college women went narrowly for Trump 52-46%, but non-college men backed Trump decisively at 61-37%.

I’ve produced many maps of the 2024 election — some at state level, others at county detail — and a few that treated the results as an artificial landscape (the “Trump archipelago,” or Mars-/Moon-like views). What those maps didn’t show was how men and women, and people with and without a college degree, voted. Reddit user crazyboyhere made four maps that split the electorate by education (college / non-college) and gender (women / men).

College-educated women vs. college-educated men

61% of college-educated women nationwide voted for Harris, 37% for Trump

51% of college-educated men nationwide voted for Harris, 47% for Trump

College-educated women show a steady Democratic preference in most metropolitan corridors and denser suburban belts; their support stretches across large urban regions and many university centers. There are, however, pockets of opposite preference in lower-density and resource-oriented parts of the interior — narrow clusters where local economies and social conservatism pull college-educated women the other way. College-educated men look more mixed: the same coastal metros and big regional cities still lean Democratic, but the margin is thinner in many suburban and smaller-metro rings. In practical terms, the maps show that education pulls voters in one direction while local social and economic context — and gender — tune how strongly that pull is expressed.

Non-college women vs. non-college men

46% of non-college women nationwide voted for Harris, 52% for Trump

37% of non-college men nationwide voted for Harris, 61% for Trump

Among voters without a four-year degree, the maps change in intensity. Non-college women still show Democratic majorities around dense urban areas and some industrial metro zones; away from those pockets, they tend to lean Republican. Non-college men, by contrast, provide the deepest Republican concentrations: large contiguous swaths of lower-density territory are strongly Republican for this group, and only a few dense, government- or institution-centered places remain Democratic.

Former President Donald Trump has secured a historic comeback victory in the 2024 presidential election, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris to become America’s 47th president. According to CBS News, Trump’s win in Wisconsin early Wednesday morning pushed him past the 270 electoral votes needed for victory, ultimately securing 291 electoral votes.

The Electoral College Shift

One of the most striking aspects of this election is the redistribution of electoral votes compared to 2020:

Key Changes in Battleground States

Georgia (16 electoral votes): From Democratic to Republican

Arizona (11 electoral votes): From Democratic to Republican

Pennsylvania (19 electoral votes, down from 20): From Democratic to Republican

Michigan (15 electoral votes, down from 16): From Democratic to Republican

Nevada (6 electoral votes): From Democratic to Republican

Wisconsin (10 electoral votes): From Democratic to Republican

The New York Times reports that Trump improved upon his 2020 performance in both red and blue states, with particularly strong showings in the crucial swing states that determined the outcome.

The Closest Races

According to BBC News, several states were decided by remarkably thin margins:

Wisconsin: Trump won by just 0.9% (49.61% vs 48.71%)

New Hampshire: Harris held by 2.78% (50.66% vs 47.88%)

Nevada: Trump flipped by 3.12% (50.60% vs 47.48%)

North Carolina: Trump won by 3.33% (50.92% vs 47.59%)

Minnesota: Harris maintained by 4.24% (50.92% vs 46.68%)

Regional Power Shifts

The Sun Belt gained significant electoral influence in this election:

Texas: Increased from 38 to 40 electoral votes

Florida: Grew from 29 to 30 electoral votes

North Carolina: Gained one vote, now at 16

Meanwhile, the Rust Belt saw declining influence, with several key states losing electoral votes:

Pennsylvania: Dropped to 19 electoral votes

Michigan: Reduced to 15 electoral votes

Ohio: Decreased to 17 electoral votes

This shift in electoral power from the Midwest to the South and Southwest reflects the changing political geography of the country, with growing importance of Sun Belt states in determining presidential outcomes.

The Urban-Rural Divide Deepens

While Harris maintained strong support in major urban centers, Trump’s dominance in rural and suburban areas proved decisive. In Pennsylvania, for example, The New York Times reports that despite Harris’s strong performance in Philadelphia, Trump’s victory in Erie County – often considered a reliable bellwether – exemplified broader trends across the state’s rural and suburban regions.

Landslide Territories

Some states saw overwhelming victories for one candidate…

Wyoming: Trump won by 45.76% (71.60% vs 25.84%)

West Virginia: Trump secured a 41.87% margin (69.98% vs 28.11%)

North Dakota: Trump won by 36.49% (66.98% vs 30.49%)

Vermont: Harris won by 31.51% (63.83% vs 32.32%)

Maryland: Harris secured by 26.80% (61.77% vs 34.97%)

A Shifting Political Landscape

The election revealed dramatic changes in party support across the country. The most significant Democratic losses occurred in traditional blue strongholds – New York saw Democratic support plummet by 5.6 percentage points, New Jersey experienced a 5.5-point decline, Florida dropped by 4.9 points, and California saw a 4.7-point decrease. This widespread erosion of Democratic support across both coastal strongholds and swing states painted a clear picture of shifting political preferences.

The Republican gains told an equally compelling story, with the most dramatic surge occurring in New York and New Jersey, where Republican support grew by nearly 6 percentage points. Florida and California also demonstrated significant Republican growth, with increases of 4.8 and 4 points respectively. This pattern of Republican gains across diverse states – from traditional battlegrounds to Democratic strongholds – suggests a broader electoral realignment that crossed regional boundaries.

The Turnout Factor

Voter participation patterns proved crucial to the outcome. While most of the country saw decreased turnout, the industrial Midwest bucked this trend in fascinating ways.

However, the real story emerges when we compare these numbers to 2020.

The shifts in participation proved dramatic and potentially decisive. Alaska experienced the most striking decline, with turnout plunging by more than 11 percentage points. Other significant drops occurred in New Jersey (-8.3 points) and Illinois (-6.9 points). Even reliably Democratic California saw participation fall by 6.3 points.

Yet amid this national downturn, several crucial battleground states bucked the trend. Michigan saw a 1.4-point rise, Wisconsin’s turnout increased by 1.3 points to 76.4%, and Pennsylvania gained 1.25 points. Nevada also saw increased engagement, with turnout growing by 1.5 points. These seemingly small upticks in participation across these key states – virtually the only places to see consistent turnout growth – may have played a crucial role in determining the election’s outcome.

Looking ahead, this electoral map represents not just a victory for Trump but a significant realignment in American politics. CBS News reports that at 78, Trump will become the oldest president to assume office, with Republicans also gaining control of the Senate.

Looking at a map of the world’s voting practices reveals an intriguing pattern. While most countries have voluntary electoral systems, a significant number have made voting a legal requirement for their citizens.

As of January 2023, 21 countries have compulsory voting laws, though only 10 actively enforce them.

The Debate Over Civic Duty and Individual Liberties

Proponents of compulsory voting argue that it strengthens democracy by creating a more representative electorate and aligning political choices with the true preferences of citizens. They view voting as a fundamental civic responsibility, akin to jury service or military conscription.

However, critics raise valid concerns about the impact on individual freedoms. They contend that forcing citizens to vote infringes on the freedom of speech, which includes the right not to speak. There are also worries about the regressive nature of fines imposed on non-voters and the potential for increased vulnerability to vote-buying schemes.

Diverse Approaches to Enforcement

The global landscape of compulsory voting is further enriched by the varying approaches to implementation and enforcement. Australia stands out for its strict adherence to mandatory voting, while nations like Belgium, Greece, and Turkey have compulsory laws but do not actively enforce them.

Other countries, such as Bolivia and Singapore, take a more punitive approach, restricting access to public services for those who fail to cast their ballots. Alternatively, Argentina and Belgium provide alternative means for citizens to fulfill their civic duty, such as voting by mail or proxy.

With the 2024 presidential election approaching, a new map created by Visual Capitalist, using data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis reveals an intriguing economic pattern across America’s political landscape. The data tells a story that goes beyond simple party lines, showing how household incomes vary dramatically between red, blue, and swing states.

The differences are clear: Democratic-leaning states generally show higher median household incomes, while Republican strongholds typically report lower earnings. But the story isn’t quite that simple.

Take Massachusetts and Maryland, both consistently Democratic states, leading the pack with median household incomes of $107,000 and $102,000 respectively. What’s interesting is that Utah, a reliable Republican state, comes in third at $101,000 – breaking the expected pattern.

At the other end of the spectrum, the lowest incomes are found in Mississippi ($55,000), Louisiana ($58,000), and West Virginia ($60,000) – all traditionally Republican states. According to the Economic Policy Institute, these states’ economies heavily depend on traditional industries like agriculture, manufacturing, and natural resources.

The seven swing states that could determine the 2024 presidential election tell their own story:

Arizona: $83,000

Nevada: $81,000

Pennsylvania: $80,000

Wisconsin: $80,000

Michigan: $77,000

Georgia: $72,000

North Carolina: $69,000

What makes this data particularly relevant is its timing. According to the Brookings Institution, these swing states, home to diverse economic sectors, will likely play a crucial role in the upcoming election, with over 186 million Americans expected to vote.

The income variations reflect deeper economic realities. Blue states often feature more urbanized, service-oriented economies with strong technology and financial sectors. Meanwhile, red states frequently rely on traditional industries that, while vital to the nation’s economy, typically generate lower median incomes.

However, there are notable exceptions. New Mexico, despite being reliably Democratic, reports a lower median income of $61,000. Alaska and Utah, both Republican strongholds, boast some of the highest median incomes in the country.

Looking to display this fascinating data in your home or office? Here are some high-quality map options available on Amazon:

If you enjoy looking at maps, you might sometimes wonder why a map looks the way it does. The circumstances leading to a particular demographic being more prevalent here, or a border being created there, can often be very confusing and exciting.

Below are maps that illustrate the fascinating relationship between the phenomena currently being observed and processes that, at first glance, seem to have nothing to do with them.

How a coastline 100 million years ago influences modern election results in Alabama

Reddit user IamShartacus made six maps of the American state of Alabama. Collectively, these maps tell a story that ties a coastline from the time of the dinosaurs via slavery to contemporary political demographics.

Map 1 presents the Cretaceous sediments in Alabama. These sediments are rocks and minerals laid down along the marshy southern coast of the Appalachia landmass (named for the Appalachian Mountains) , which existed about 100 million years ago. North America had not yet appeared at that time.

Map 2 shows the whereabouts of Blackland Prairie soil. This type of soil is known for its high fertility because of the nutrients accumulated during the Cretaceous period.

Map 3 illustrates the current farm sizes in the state. The largest farms (red color) can be found in territories with the most fertile soil. This map presents how economically essential Blackland Prairie soil is.

Map 4 pictures slave populations according to the 1860 census. At that time, slaves considered for 45% of the Alabama’s population. Merely 3% of the state population comprised free Black citizens. In the dark-colored regions of the map, black enslaved people considered for over 80% of the population. Slaves mainly labored on cotton plantations, and these plantations were most common in the territories with the most fertile soil.

Map 5 shows us the modern Black population of Alabama. The darkest red areas show more than 44% of the population of the region is Black. Despite the 150 years between these maps, these is still a close correlation between the historic slave populations, and the modern Black populations.

Map 6 presents the results of the 2020 election. Territories with large African American populations are much more expected to vote for the Democratic party (blue color). This tendency continues to the east and west of Alabama, along the so called “Black Belt” of the southern United States, and along the buried shoreline of the Cretaceous continent of Appalachia.

When we look at maps and data about the contemporary world, it’s easy to forget that everything about our world has been dictated and formed by the events of prehistory and history. From ancient continents to awful atrocities, our world is a product of its past, and knowledge that past can be key to facilitating us better understand the present.

Arizona voting precincts and Arizona Native American reservations

The maps below illustrate the relationship of voting results to the location of Indian reservations.

This coincidence seems to be explained because the Democrats provide more grant funding for tribes, including child care, school fund, rental/mortgage assistance, food help, water clean-up, fire mitigation, and infrastructure help.

Spanish election in 2019 and military coup in 1936

The map below, created by @simongerman600 shows correlation between areas where the 1936 military coup against the democratic government initially succeeded and the 2019 national Spanish elections.

Location of mosques and the former border between East and West Germany

The disappearing border between East and West Germany still affects immigration in Germany. Emigrants from Turkey prefer to settle in the more economically developed former West Germany.

Although decades have passed since the unification of East and West Germany, the former border between the countries is visible even from space.

Elections and the borders of Austria-Hungary Empire

But it is not just the border between East and West Germany that has faded into oblivion that is influencing various aspects of life in the newly emerged state. There are many such examples. Austria-Hungary was a great power in Europe between 1867 and 1918, and this power is visible, even in the twenty-first century.

Election in Poland and Population of wild boars

On the election map of Poland, you can clearly see the old German borders in Poland.

Soviet resettlement program was about concentrating people around cities when they resettled the polish people onto the former German territory – much of the rural land was much less populated.

This rural vs urban balance is much of what leads to the political, social, and ecological differences. Wild boar can survive a lot easier if there’s fewer people in the country to mess with em.

Sweden’s pornography preferences vs. radiation level received from Chernobyl

These maps illustrate a very unexpected correlation between the radioactive fallout from Chernobyl and a genre of Japanese anime defined by overtly sexualized characters and sexually explicit pictures.

The 2020 U.S. presidential election revealed stark contrasts in how Americans vote based on where they live. These original maps show Biden's urban archipelagos – centers of economic power generating 70% of U.S. GDP – scattered across Trump's expansive heartland. From county-level analysis to population-weighted visualizations, these maps tell the story of two Americas: one concentrated in high-density cities, another spread across the rural landscape. Building on my viral 2016 electoral maps, this new series offers fresh insights into our nation's deepening political geography.

When Americans went to the polls on November 3, 2020, they didn’t just elect a president – they painted a fascinating picture of a nation divided not only by politics, but by geography, economics, and way of life.

Joe Biden made history as America’s oldest incoming president at 78, while Kamala Harris shattered multiple glass ceilings as the first woman, first Black person, and first person of South Asian descent to become Vice President. But perhaps even more remarkable was the election’s turnout – a staggering 66.9% of eligible voters cast their ballots, the highest since 1900, telling a story of an increasingly engaged America.

The electoral math was clear: Biden’s 306 electoral votes to Trump’s 232. Donald Trump became the first U.S. president since George H.W. Bush in 1992 and the 11th incumbent in the nation’s history to lose a bid for a second term. Joe Biden secured the largest percentage of the popular vote against an incumbent since 1932.

The maps presented below are my original work, created using election results data from multiple authoritative sources including Fox News, Politico, the New York Times, and the State of Alaska’s official election website (Alaska.gov). County-level demographic and economic data were sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau, while the GDP analysis comes from the Brookings Institution’s 2020 report on metropolitan economic performance.

These maps don’t look drastically different from 2016, but they tell a compelling story: Joe Biden won the majority of the people, while Donald Trump won the preponderance of the land. What’s particularly striking is how the election results mirror America’s economic landscape. According to the Brookings Institute, Biden-voting counties aren’t just home to more Democrats – they’re economic powerhouses, generating 70% of U.S. GDP. Picture this: just 100 counties produce half of America’s economic output, and nearly all backed Biden.

The percentage of support for each presidential candidate varied significantly across the country, creating distinct patterns of political geography:

Candidate Preference Map

To better understand the nuances of voter preference, I created a map that shows the presidential election results when considering vote margins by blending each blue and red vote within each U.S. county:

U.S. Presidential election 2020: choropleth unclassed blended hue

The 2020 election saw unprecedented voter participation. Joe Biden received more than 81 million votes, surpassing Hillary Clinton’s 2016 total by almost 15 million and Trump’s by 18 million. Trump also improved his performance, gaining 11 million more votes than in 2016, reaching over 74 million votes total.

Below is my visualization that combines both vote margin and population data to give a more complete picture:

In 2016, I created the original “Trumpland” and “Clinton Archipelago” maps that went viral, reaching millions of viewers worldwide and being shared across numerous media platforms. The concept resonated because it provided a striking visual representation of America’s political geography. Now, four years later, I’ve updated these signature visualizations with the 2020 election data, allowing us to see how these political “lands” and “islands” have shifted.

These visualizations reveal more than just election results – they show two different Americas coexisting side by side. In one, dense urban centers drive innovation and economic growth; in the other, vast stretches of land preserve traditional ways of life and values. Neither is more “real” America than the other – they’re both essential parts of the national story.

The maps also illuminate the growing urban-rural divide in American politics. Democratic strongholds appear as islands in a sea of red, concentrated in urban areas where population density and economic activity peak. It’s a stark visualization of not just how Americans voted, but how they live, work, and see their country’s future.

What these maps make clear is that the 2020 election wasn’t just a contest between two candidates – it was a referendum on two different visions of America’s future, mapped out across our landscape in red and blue.

Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. has been elected the 46th president of the U.S., but many Americans did not vote.

The map below shows what the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election results would have been if votes were not cast for Joe Biden or Donald Trump and had gone to a fictional candidate “Did Not Vote.”

Unlike in 2016, when “Did Not Vote” would have earned 471 electoral college votes, in 2020, it got just 195 votes.

Candidate “Did Not Vote” 2016 vs Candidate “Did Not Vote” 2020

Joe Bide has enlarged Hilary Clinton’s record from 51 to 231 electoral votes, while Donald Trump has raised from 16 to 112 votes.

According to the Washington Post in 2020, the voter turnout rate was more than 65%, the highest in 120 years since 1900 (73.7%).

There have been 46 presidencies (including the contemporary one, Joe Biden, whose term began in 2021), and 45 different people have worked as president. Grover Cleveland was selected to 2 nonconsecutive terms, and as such, is regarded the 22nd and 24th president of the U.S.

While some U.S. states consistently have Democrat or Republican victories, other swings between the two parties. Here the U.S. presidential voting history science in 1789.

Thirteen years after the signing of the declaration of independence, George Washington was elected the Union’s first president in 1789. He effortlessly wins a second term. But only approximately 1.3% of the nation’s population cast a vote. In most U.S. states, just white men who owned property can vote with some exceptions.

How the 1788-1789 U.S. election went

The 1788–1789 U.S. election was the 1st quadrennial presidential election and the only U.S. presidential election spanned two calendar years (1788 and 1789).

The birth of the two-party system includes the federalists who favor financial interests and the democratic Republicans who support farmers. The election of Thomas Jefferson in 1800 began almost 40 years of democratic Republican presidential dominance. In 1824 four democratic Republicans ran against each other in a close race decided by the house of representatives, who preferred John Quincy Adams over Andrew Jackson. Four years later, Jackson runs again. By then, many U.S. states have eliminated property requirements, and voter supports approximately doubled. Jackson unites white working-class voters to fight Washington’s elitism, and he wins in a landslide.

Andrew Jackson was elected again in 1832. A new business-friendly opposition party comes together; they call themselves the Whigs Party, and the other significant issues are fighting the expansion of slavery into new territories. Slavery is the one problem most likely determining which way someone votes during the first half of the 19th century, with conservatives and liberals on both sides.

In 1836 four Wing candidates ran, but the democratic Republican Martin Van Buren got the most states, and power changed back and forth between the two parties for the next decade. New U.S. states like Florida, Texas, and Iowa extend the electoral map. By 1856 after a series of defeats and infighting over slavery, the Whig party collapses. A new Republican Party appears confronting slavery and requesting economic reform, so at this point, the country has both significant parties that exist nowadays even though other political programs have shifted drastically since then. Republicans gain support in the north and attempt to win free black voters in the South.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party unites the pro-slavery votes and cements their hold on the South. That divide increased, and in 1860 Republican Abraham Lincoln won on an anti-slavery political platform.

Starting with South Carolina, 11 southern U.S. states left the Union to form the Confederacy, and the civil war began in 1861. During the war, Abraham Lincoln wins a second term.

A year later, the Confederacy failed, and southern U.S. states began to rejoin the Union. Abraham Lincoln was killed in 1865, and vice president Andrew Johnson took over. Republicans got power when Ulysses S. Grant won in 1868. Ulysses Grant signs the fifteenth amendment giving all male residents the right to vote regardless of color or race except native Americans. Ulysses Grant won again in 1872.

In 1876 it wasn’t obvious which candidate won the vote, and congress offered a compromise – Republicans got the presidency with Rutherford B. Hayes taking office, while Democrats achieved the withdrawal of federal troops defending civil rights of newly freed black people vote.

State and local governments legislated laws intended to prevent African Americans from voting democrats right away. The entire rebuilding viewpoint dominates the South for almost the next century. However, in 1896 Republican William McKinley won his party’s most significant margin in 20 years.

In 1912 Theodore Roosevelt ran as Progressive and what he named the “Bull Moose Party.” Uses the Republican vote in half, Handing won the Democrat Woodrow Wilson. Roosevelt’s Progressive Party was the first with a plan intended to attract women’s suffrage.

The women’s movement grows force through 1910, and U.S. states like California, Oregon, and Washington give women the right to vote. The 19th amendment gave women the right to vote nationwide appeared in 1920. Six decades passed before they turned out the equivalent rate as men and formed a significant voting coalition.

After Woodrow Willson, Republicans won three times in a row. In 1928, Herbert Hoover defeated New York Governor Al Smith by 17 points, supported by a booming economy and prejudice toward Smith, a Catholic. In 1932, the economy plunged into the depression, and Herbert Hoover lost by a similar 17 point margin to another New York Governor, Franklin D Roosevelt.

World War 2 conflicts with the end of his second term, and the nation decides to stick with them for an unusual third term. Elector demographics and party alignment considerably changed during his 12-year presidency, which can still be noticed nowadays. Democrats solidify the support of new immigrants and more modern working-class whites who had before voted Republican. Democrats began winning using black people’s votes migrating north to escape the South’s Jim Crow laws.

After Franklin Roosevelt died in 1945, vice president Harry S. Truman took over and won the presidential election of 1948.

Regular election result map shows who won in which U.S county but didn’t reveal the relative voting populations among each county. It can make people think that every county has an equal population. Moreover, such maps it’s not created to display the margin of victory within each county. It shows who won in a county, even if they won by just one vote.

This regular election result map clearly shows who won in which U.S county, but this map doesn’t reveal the relative voting populations among each U.S. county.

U.S. presidents have been born in various regions of the United States, but there are a few regions that have been more predominant.

Several presidents were born in the New England region, which includes the states of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. This region includes the birthplaces of John Adams, John Quincy Adams, John F. Kennedy, Calvin Coolidge, and Franklin Pierce.

The Mid-Atlantic region, consisting of states like New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, has also seen the birth of several presidents. Presidents such as Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Martin Van Buren, and James Buchanan were born in this region.

The Southern states of the United States have also produced a significant number of presidents. Virginia, in particular, has been the birthplace of many presidents, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, and John Tyler. Other Southern states like North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Kentucky, and Arkansas have also contributed to the birthplaces of presidents.

The Midwest region of the United States has seen the birth of several presidents as well. States like Ohio, Illinois, and Iowa have been the birthplaces of presidents such as Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, William McKinley, Herbert Hoover, and Barack Obama.

Presidents have also been born in various other regions across the country. For example, Donald Trump was born in New York, Ronald Reagan in Illinois, and Jimmy Carter in Georgia. Additionally, some presidents were born in regions that were not part of the United States at the time of their birth, such as Hawaii (Barack Obama) and the Panama Canal Zone (John McCain).

The maps of the United States below show states and counties where a President of the U.S. was born.

States where a President of the U.S. was born

Out of the 50 states, only 21 have the distinction of being the birthplace of at least one president. Even though Florida and Michigan are densely populated, no president has been born in either state.

Did you know Virginia holds the record for producing the most US presidents? A total of 8 presidents were born there. Ohio is second with 7, followed by New York with 5, and Massachusetts with 4.

Counties where a President of the U.S. was born

A total of 16 counties have been the birthplaces of U.S. presidents.

The counties that have been the birthplace of the most U.S. presidents are as follows:

Westmoreland County, Virginia: This county holds the distinction of being the birthplace of the first U.S. president, George Washington.

Charles City County, Virginia: Two U.S. presidents, William Henry Harrison and John Tyler, were born in this county.

Orange County, Virginia: The birthplace of President James Madison, who played a key role in the drafting and ratification of the U.S. Constitution.
