This is a 1947 map depicting the “What If” following the end of the Second World War in Europe. The map was published on the loose page of Sunday News on March 9, 1947.
1st Reich The small map dated 1914 shows the area ruled by Kaiser Wilhelm I, who had proclaimed Emperor in Versailles on Jan. 18, 1871, when Germany became a world power after the Franco-Prussian War. The invasion of Belgium in 1914 was the beginning of World War I.
2nd Reich After Germany’s defeat and the abdication of the Kaiser, the National Assembly met on February 6, 1919, and elected Friedrich Ebert president of the republic. Under the Weimar Constitution, promulgated later in the year, the republic lasted until 1933 when the Nazis came into power.
3rd Reich Hitler’s appointment as chancellor led to the scrapping of the Constitution and the formation of a totalitarian state under his dictatorship. The large map gives the area’s boundaries under Nazi domination during the period of Germany’s greatest expansion – in 1941 and 1942.
4th Reich With four Allied nations occupying German soil and attempting to form an agreement concerning the country’s future organization, the boundaries are still to be determined. The map dated 1947 gives the existing division into American, British, French, and Russian zones.
