The first khanates in the Caucasus arose in the 8th Century with the rise of Dagestani City States and Kingdoms. They grew steadily in power, yet were relentlessly reduced during the Mongol Invasions. But the Turkic invasions in the Middle Ages brought with them new Khanates in Azerbaijan and Dagestan in the 17th Century. They would soon gain power after the fall of the Afsharid Empire and at their height completely dominated Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Dagestan.
