Australia includes 6 states: New South Wales (Population: 8 million; Area: 0.8 million sq km), Queensland (Population: 5.1 million; Area: 1.7 million sq km), Western Australia (Population: 2.6 million; Area: 2.5 million sq km), Victoria (Population: 0.2 million; Area: 2.5 million sq km), South Australia (Population: 5.1 million; Area: 5.1 million sq km) and Tasmania (Population: 0.5 million; Area: 0.06 million sq km). They retain a degree of autonomy, being the successors of the former Australian colonies.

Australia includes 3 internal territories, the Australian Capital Territory – Canberra (population 423 thousand), the Northern Territory (population 246 thousand) and Jervis Bay Territory. These territories, function in fact as states themselves.

Australia also consists of 7 external territories: Ashmore and Cartier Islands, Australian Antarctic Territory, Christmas Island, Cocos Islands, Coral Sea Islands, Heard Island and McDonald Islands and Norfolk Island.

I don’t think Victoria is the same size as Western Australia!
