The average annual per capita disposal income by household in China in 2014 was about 20,000 yuan or approximately $3,000, which equates to $8.22 a day. In 1981 88.3 percent of China’s population lived on less than $1.90 a day.
The map below shows a striking dichotomy in Chinese society today. Urban households in coastal cities such as Beijing and Shanghai are faring quite well. An urban household’s per capita disposable income is $7,033 ($19.27 a day) in Beijing and $7,078 ($19.39 a day) in Shanghai.
75 percent of China’s urban consumers would be middle class by 2022 (McKinsey & Company). That’s a whopping 270 million people, which would be a middle class almost the size of the entire U.S. population.
Expects urban households in the most successful Chinese cities to make $8,695-33,188 a year within the next eight years.
