It is not surprising to anyone that firearms kill many people in the United States.
Based on information from the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the map below displays the average number of gun deaths per 100 thousand county residents from 2004 through 2010. The red color is for U.S. counties with rates over the median for all counties; blue is below the median.

Accidental Firearm Deaths

About 13 thousand Americans were accidentally shot and killed from 1999 through 2019. Death rates were highest in Mississippi and Louisiana and lowest in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
