In Europe, the school year usually ends at the end of May and the 2nd half of July. Mid-June is the time when the summer holidays begin in most nations.

How long is the summer break?

The length of the summer holidays ranges significantly between countries: from 6 weeks in some German Länder, the Netherlands, the UK (England, Wales and Scotland) and Liechtenstein up to 13 weeks in Albania, Latvia, Portugal, and Turkey, between 12 and 13 weeks in Italy and even 15 weeks in Bulgaria.

Some nations show variations in the length of summer break depending on the level of education. In secondary education in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland, students start the summer holidays earlier than in primary education.

On the contrary, in Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Lithuania, and Serbia, pupils in primary education begin their summer break before those in secondary education.
