The World Online (Cartogram)

The nations are scaled proportionally to the number of Internet users in that country. Countries with fewer than 470 thousand people online have been removed from the map. The shading depicts the percentage of the population that is online. The visualization uses 2013 data from the World Bank’s Worldwide Governance Indicators project and Natural Earth.

The anonymous Internet

The map below shows the average number of Tor users per day calculated between August 2012 and July 2013.

Tor is an open-source software for allowing anonymous communication. Tor manages Internet traffic through a free, worldwide, volunteer overlay network consisting of more than 7 thousand relays to conceal a user’s location and usage from anyone conducting network surveillance or traffic analysis.

Using Tor does it more challenging to trace Internet activity to the user: this includes “visits to Web sites, online posts, instant messages, and other communication forms.” Tor’s intended use is to protect the personal privacy of its users and their freedom and ability to conduct private communication by keeping their Internet activities from being controlled.
