Christianity is the most prevalent religion in the U.S.; about 70 percent of adults in the U.S. identified themselves as Christians.

All Protestant denominations considered for approximately 49 percent of the population, making Protestantism the most prevalent form of Christianity in the nation and the preponderance of religion in general in the U.S. At the same time, the Catholic Church, at 23%, is the largest individual denomination. The country’s 2nd-largest church and the single largest Protestant denomination is the Southern Baptist Convention. There are several Orthodox churches among Eastern Christian denominations, with just below one million adherents.

After Christianity, Judaism is the next most populous religious association in the United States. There are about six million Jews. Islam is the 3rd largest religion in numbers in the U.S., followed by 0.8% of the population after Christianity and Judaism. Buddhism and Hinduism follow it closely in numbers.
