The Netherlands is the 68th most populated country in the world, and as of May 1, 2023, it has a population of 18 million. According to the National Population Forecast, the population will reach its peak of nearly 18 million in 2040.
According to recent data, the Netherlands has a relatively balanced age distribution. The population is spread fairly evenly across different age groups, with a slight skew towards older age groups due to longer life expectancy and lower birth rates.
The map below created by rug.nl/geo illustrates the average age of the Dutch in each municipality.
Like many other developed nations, the Netherlands is experiencing an aging population. This trend is attributed to several factors, including increased life expectancy and declining birth rates. As a result, the proportion of elderly people in the population is expected to increase in the coming years.
Age structure:
0–14 years: 2.9 million (16.1%)
15–64 years: 11.5 million (64.1%)
65 and over: 3.6 million (20.2%)
The number of people aged 65 and over is expected to increase from 2.6 million in 2011 to nearly 4 million in 2025. In 2025, 22% of the population will be aged 65 or over.
