According to a Gallup poll carried in October 2020. More than 44 percent of U.S. adults say they reside in a house with a gun, including approximately 32 percent who respond they personally own one.
Many public opinion organizations and presses have studies public opinion on gun control in the U.S for more than twenty years. Major tragedies like school shootings have influenced public opinion. As of early March 2018, a preponderance of Americans supports more stringent gun laws, including comprehensive support for extensive background examination and necessary waiting periods for gun buying, forbidding sales of guns to persons under 21 years old, and outlawing assault weapons.

Perspectives regarding gun violence vary broadly by race and ethnicity. About 82 percent of Black adults state gun violence is a considerable problem. For comparison, nearly 58 percent of Hispanic adults and 39 percent of White adults see gun violence this way.
