The US was the 2nd largest energy consumer after China. The United States is placed 7th in energy consumption per capita after Canada and some small states.
With less than 5 percent of the world’s population, the United States consumes 17percent of the world’s energy and accounts for 15 percent of world Gross Domestic Product.

In 2018, the U.S. set a new record for energy consumption: one hundred quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) of energy.
Most of this energy comes from fossil fuels (25% from petroleum, 22% from coal, 22% from natural gas, nuclear energy from 8.4%, renewable energy – 8%).
