Major targets for nuclear bombs in the Soviet Union, part of planning a nuclear attack on the USSR (September 1945)

In 1945, shortly after Japan’s capitulation, US Air Force planners started to analyze how many nuclear bombs are needed to destroy Soviet Union (USSR) industrial capability, transportation network, and telecommunication centers. Analysis revealed as optimum possession 466 bombs (123 at the minimum) ready to immediate use in a war with USSR.

The National Security Archives recently published a declassified list of U.S. nuclear targets from 1956, spanned 1,100 locations across Eastern Europe, Russia, China, and North Korea. The map below shows 1100 U.S. nuclear targets in the Eastern Block countries as of 1956.
