The first social network to touch a million monthly active users was MySpace. It reached this milestone about 2004. MySpace probably was the beginning of social networks as we know them.
At the time, Facebook only had a few thousand users. Nowadays, Facebook is a market leader.
Facebook was the first social media to exceed one billion registered accounts and now reached more than 2.7 billion monthly active users.

The animated map above shows Facebook’s way to social network domination from 2008 to 2020.
By 2009, the social media giant became the most popular network in North America, South America, Europe, Oceania, and South Asia.
After fast becoming popular in the Americas and Europe, most of Facebook’s growth is in Africa and the Asia Pacific.
By the beginning of 2020, Facebook was ranked as the leading social network site in 151 out of 167 surveyed nations, or above 90 percent.
China’s most favorite social network site is Qzone, with 517 million monthly active users, but all-in-one messaging social app WeChat had more than 1.2 billion monthly active users.
Russian internet giant Mail.ru owns social networks ‘VKontakte’ and ‘Odnoklassniki.’ These social networks are the most popular in many former Soviet republics.
