Literal Chinese translations of world country names

Chinese is a group of language varieties spoken by the ethnic Han Chinese majority and many minority ethnic groups in Greater China. About 1.3 billion people (or approximately 16% of the world’s population) speak Chinese as their first language.

There are about 13 main regional varieties of the Chinese language, of which the most spoken by far is Mandarin, with approximately 800 million speakers (66%).

Based on the Beijing dialect of Mandarin, standard Mandarin was chosen in the 1930s and is now an official language of China. The written form, using the logograms, is shared by literate speakers of unintelligible dialects.
