What about India?
Very much class-based. I had Indian college roomie, real smart: only learned English when jumped to “highschool” from native-language system
Not nearly as many as I’d have guessed. Not knowing the language is hard for immigrants yet not knowing the culture can be almost as hard.
Surprising. I would expect more countries to have English as a secondary language … India, Mexico, Russia etc.

Odd Japan isn’t on the list. All children learn English in school.
Most Japanese I’ve met haven’t spoken English very well – despite years of study barely worth mentioning (‘course my Japanese is even worse).
I lived there a long time. Everyone I knew spoke English. Both on Hokkaido and Honshu.
Pakistan and India should also be marked. But Greece? Switzerland?
This cant be right. Many more former UK colonies speak English.
