The Greater Tokyo Area or Tokyo-Yokohama Metropolitan Area is the most populated urban area globally, comprising Japan’s Kantō region (Tokyo; prefectures: Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma) and the prefecture of Yamanashi of the nearby Chūbu region.
There are 3 other significant cities within the metropolitan area. Yokohama, approximately 32 kilometers (20 miles) southwest of Tokyo, is the second largest city in Japan. The industrial city of Kawasaki fibs is between Tokyo and Yokohama.

The population of the Greater Tokyo Area is 38.5 million, giving it a population density of 2,642 people/sq /km. It is the second-largest single urban area in the world in terms of built-up or urban function landmass at 8,547 sq. km. (3,300 sq. mi.), behind only New York City at 11,642 sq. km. (4,495 sq. mi.).

The area has the most major metropolitan economy globally, with a total GDP (nominal) of almost $2 trillion. The Greater Tokyo Area had a GDP of $1.5 trillion in 2008 (at purchasing power parity), ranking again as the world’s biggest urban agglomeration GDP.
