With about 56,000 inhabitants, Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) can be considered a micronation on a mega island. More than simply a home for 31% of the total population, capital Nuuk is the economic, cultural and political heart of the country, as well as the main port. Because of its dominance, its modern lifestyles and its close ties with Denmark -the former colonist and still the (economic) mother country- Nuuk is not always seen in a good light by the other Kalaallit (Greenlanders). Whereas others supposedly live in harmony with nature, the capital were a modern metropole out of touch with Greenlandic life. As always, that’s only one side of the story.

The map features all permanently inhabited localities as of 1-1-2016. Most of them are towns or settlements, but also year-round military and research stations are shown. South-Greenland’s sheep farms are either integrated with neighbouring towns/settlements, or if isolated clusters of farms exist, such clusters are shown as a single locality. There are about 50 farms, housing 170 people who live off sheep and some crops. Fisheries, supplemented with hunting, provides the mainstay for most Greenlanders, although the bigger towns have developed a rich service economy resembling other nordic towns.
