A law organizing the first national park, Yellowstone, was signed in 1872. Principles for selecting national parks cover natural attractions, unique ecosystems, and geological peculiarities. Nowadays, the United States has 63 national parks. 14 American national parks are assigned UNESCO World Heritage Sites, while 21 national parks are chosen by UNESCO as Biosphere Reserves, and 8 national parks are nominated in both UNESCO lists.

Largest National Park in Each U.S. State

The largest U.S. national park is Wrangell–St. Elias in Alaska: at above eight million acres (32,375 sq. km.), it is bigger than any of the 9 smallest U.S. states. The following 3 biggest parks are also in Alaska.

The “tiniest” is Gateway Arch National Park, Missouri, at about 193 acres (0.7804 sq km). The entire area protected by U.S national parks is about 52.2 million acres (211,000 sq. km.).

The U.S. state with the highest percentage of national and park coverage is Hawaii, with parks protecting 9.41 percent of the state’s 4,134 thousand acres (16730 sq km). Its 50 U.S. state parks cover 30 thousand acres (121 sq km), while the 2 national parks in Hawaii make up 358,870 acres (1452 sq km).

The U.S. state that ranked last was Kansas, with just 0.06% of the state’s 52,660 thousand acres (213107 sq km)made up of 26 state parks (32 thousand acres or 130 sq km) and 0 national parks.

Gateway Arch is in Missouri. Not Illinois.
