Would Canadians ever agree to become part of the United States? A recent survey conducted by Leger on December 10, 2024, with a map created by @cactusmapping explored this question, and the results are clear: the vast majority of Canadians oppose the idea. But why? To understand the reaction, it’s important to look at Canada’s history, national identity, and its long relationship with the U.S.

Survey Results: A Strong ‘No’

The survey, conducted on December 10, 2024, asked Canadians, “Would you like Canada to become the 51st state of the United States?” Here’s what they said:

  • Total: No – 82%, Yes – 13%, Don’t know – 5%
  • Men: No – 76%, Yes – 19%, Don’t know – 5%
  • Women: No – 87%, Yes – 7%, Don’t know – 6%

By province, opposition remained strong, with the highest rejection rate in Atlantic Canada (90%) and the lowest in Alberta (74%).

Why Does Canada Say No?

The Formation of Canada and National Identity

Canada’s identity has been shaped by its unique history. The country officially came into being on July 1, 1867, with the passage of the British North America Act, uniting three British colonies into the Dominion of Canada. Over time, Canada gained increasing independence from Britain, culminating in the repatriation of its constitution in 1982.

Canadian identity is often defined by contrasts with the United States. While both countries share cultural and economic ties, Canada has taken a different path, emphasizing universal healthcare, bilingualism, and a parliamentary system. Many Canadians take pride in their distinctiveness and see little reason to change their national status.

U.S.-Canada Relations: A History of Cooperation and Conflict

The U.S. and Canada have a complex relationship. While they are close allies and trading partners, their history includes moments of tension. The U.S. attempted invasions of Canada during the American Revolution (1775–1783) and the War of 1812, but British and Canadian forces successfully repelled these efforts.

The border between the two countries was gradually established through treaties, including the Treaty of 1818 and the Oregon Treaty of 1846. Today, the U.S.-Canada border is the longest undefended border in the world, symbolizing a strong and peaceful partnership.

Could Canada Ever Become a U.S. State?

Legally, Canada could only join the U.S. if its citizens and government overwhelmingly supported the idea, and if both countries agreed on the terms. Given the survey results, this remains highly unlikely. While economic and cultural ties between the two nations are strong, Canada’s national identity remains firmly independent.
