Islam is an Abrahamic, monotheistic religion teaching that there is only one God and that Muhammad is the prophet of God. It is the world’s 2nd largest religion with over 1.8 billion adherents or 24 percent of the world’s population.

Most Muslims are of one of 2 groups Sunni (85 percent) or Shia (15 percent). About 13 percent of Muslims live in Indonesia, the largest Muslim-majority country; 31 percent of Muslims inhabit in South Asia, 20 percent in the Middle East–North Africa, 15 percent in Sub-Saharan Africa.

In 2006, nations with a Muslim majority population growth rate of 1.8 percent per year. This compares with a world population growth rate of 1.1 percent per year.
