In more than one-third of the nation’s counties, the inflation-adjusted median income dropped by 10 percent or more from 2000 to 2014. Counties with a lot of manufacturing jobs, like those around Detroit and Flint in Michigan, and North Carolina’s Wilkes County, were especially hard-hit.
