The relief of the United States is characterized by diverse geographic features, including vast mountain ranges, expansive plains, rolling hills, and coastal regions. The Rocky Mountains run from the northernmost part of the country down into the southwestern states, while the Appalachian Mountains extend along the eastern seaboard. The central region consists of the Great Plains, a vast expanse of flat or gently rolling land, and the Mississippi River, which flows through a wide, fertile valley. Coastal areas range from rugged cliffs to sandy beaches, with the Gulf of Mexico in the south and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans bordering the eastern and western coasts, respectively. Such varied topography could not but influence the names of settlements and other place names.

I decided to create a toponymic relief map of the United States inspired by John Nelson, who created magnificent toponymic maps of the United States, using tremendous text file of named places from the United States Board of Geographic Names and added it as XY data into an ArcGIS geodatabase.

Interesting how the Apps are more clear than the Rockies. Must be because the Apps are actually populated whilst the Rockies are very sparsely inhabited.

What’s the definition of “place name”? If it’s city or town or county these maps can’t possibly be accurate.
