The Baltic States—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania—are three small nations located on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea in north-central Europe. These countries share a complicated history, diverse cultures, and unique identities that make them fascinating to explore. While the term “Baltic States” might suggest a strong commonality, the differences between these nations are just as striking as their similarities.

Historically, the Baltic States were part of the Russian Empire before gaining independence after World War I. That independence was short-lived, as they were forcibly incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1940. It wasn’t until 1991, with the collapse of the USSR, that Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania regained their sovereignty. Today, these countries collaborate on various levels but do not form an official political union.

Cultural and religious diversity across the region stems from its tumultuous past. Each country has developed its own distinct character, shaped by religion, ethnicity, language, and even its favorite pastimes.

Six ways to divide the Baltic states

Here are six fascinating ways to categorize the Baltic States, each offering a different lens through which to view their diversity: Russian presence, historical roots, cultural identification, religious divisions, stereotypical temperaments, favorite sports.

It’s a good job, it is educational. There is this other thing: Baltic states are located in north east of Europe but it is not eastern Europe. It is “Baltic states”?
