The United States of Innovation: Number of patents by country (1997 – 2015)

US states are arranged in the circle according to the number of patents. States with a large number of patents are large and closer to the center (e.g. California), and vice versa (e.g. DC). Other countries, arranged around the circle, are also scaled in size according to the number of patents granted. A color scheme, similar to both US states and other countries, indicates the number of patents per 1,000 inhabitants.
